8 What is Ethernet? Ethernet is the standardized, and now the most widely used, lowcost way for connecting IT equipment for networking. Ethernet fits at layer-2 with Internet Protocol (IP) at layer-3. Ethernet is your LAN. Ethernet supports many protocols. Much like the lanes of the highway it doesn t care if there are trucks, cars, or bikes. When you open a web browser and surf, you are sending IP packets over Ethernet to the world-wide-web. WiFi is simply wireless Ethernet. 8

9 What is Ethernet Bridging? A bridge connects two LANs together so they operate like a single network. Bridges do not make any decisions on the types of traffic except to make sure both sides look the same. Bridges Are self-configuring the network operates adaptively Are Transparent to traffic (can pass VLAN, ISL, IPX, Decnet, multicast, Proprietary protocols etc.) Help manage bandwidth usage between segments Do not hinder or break LAN based network applications 9

10 Problems with Traditional Branch Office Networking? Many times, an IT engineer is required to connect two LANs together. While everyone requires security, what is really important is that everything works as if it were local! Also, they would really prefer to use an already paid-for Internet connection at both ends. (xdsl, Fibre, Cablemodem ) But, there are compatibility problems, including NAT/PAT configuration, VPN keys, telco/ptt demarc of routers, and applications that work best when they are LAN based. The acquisition and maintenance cost of alternatives is often prohibitive. 10

11 Reference Application Peer-to-Peer Bridging Used in pairs, IpTL 75 s connect to on either the WAN or LAN side of the IP network using Ethernet. Installation can be behind NAT, Firewall, Filters, or Proxies. Connection can be either in-line with the access router or as a stub on the LAN network. Each IpTl 75 initiates an outbound connection to it s peer via a single UDP port. All Ethernet traffic is securely and bi-directionally bridged between the Model 75 s over any IP network. 11
