1 1 Purpose This document describes step by step how to set up a connection with an IP, using an ewon as a gateway. The remote connection can be done in two ways: With a direct phone connection to the ewon. In this case, the ewon is configured to be a PPP server, it takes up the phone and establishes a connection. Through Internet. In this case, we use the callback mechanism. The document describes the configuration of the PC, the ewon and the P(L)C for those two types of connection. We assume the reader starts this tutorial with an ewon out of the box. 1.1 Elements To follow this Technical Note, you need: An ewon 4000, 2001 or 4001 equipped with a modem. A PC with an Internet connection An that can be reached through an IP connection. This can be a PC, a PLC that uses the XIP protocol and so on. An Internet connection for the ewon. 1.2 Document Structure The first will be to set the ewon IP address by using the ebuddy utility. Once the IP address is set, we will show how to configure the ewon by using its integrated web server. A section will describe the direct phone connection configuration and the last section will describe the configuration that is required for connections through Internet. page 1 of 14

2 ewon Configuration In this section, we will show how to configure the ewon to access the PLC registers through an IO server configuration. The forwarding will be treated later. 2.

2 2 ewon Configuration In this section, we will show how to configure the ewon to access the PLC registers through an IO server configuration. The forwarding will be treated later. 2.1 Setting the ewon IP Address The ewon is configured through its web server*. Right out of the box, the ewon has as IP address. You can find the ebuddy utility on the ewon web site ( (Support/Download Software)). This utility allows to find an ewon on the network and to change its IP address to match your LAN IP adresses range. * It is also possible to configure the ewon by dropping into it a file using an FTP client, but this is a more complex process that is explained in the ewon User Guide. Finding an ewon on the network with ebuddy Launch ebuddy.exe and click CTRL+L to switch in list mode if not the case. The list of the ewons that are connected on the network then appears: Setting the IP address from an ewon If the ewon you want to set the IP address is in the list, just right-click on it, and select Set IP Address in the contextual menu (if the ewon is not in the list, then right-click in the blank area under the list): page 2 of 14

You then come back to the previous wizard page, in which you must then enter the Username and Password fields that are required to connect to the ewon: page 3 of 14

Then click on Next and set the IP Address and

Now your ewon should appear in the ebuddy list with the new informations you have entered. page 4 of 14

5 2.2 Testing the ewon IP Address To test that the IP address has been assigned successfully, open a command prompt and ping the ewon. Open a DOS command prompt and enter ping <address> where <address> must be replaced by the newly assigned address. If the address has been correctly assigned, you should see the Ethernet led of the ewon blinking and the following screen: Figure 1: Pinging the ewon If, instead of a response time, you get a request timeout message, there is a problem and the steps must be reviewed. page 5 of 14

6 2.3 ewon Web Site We have assigned an IP address to the ewon so we can reach its HTTP server to configure it. Open a Web browser and type the address you assigned to the ewon in the address bar ( in that case). 7 3 Direct Phone Connection The Direct Phone Connection method consists in calling the ewon using a standard modem to set up a point to point connection. For this, we need to configure the ewon as a PPP server, so that it will pick up the phone, authenticate the caller and assign it an IP address. The following figure summarizes the network topology we will configure: Figure 4: Network topology There are three different networks used in the above configuration: is the network your working PC (we ll call it the laptop) is connected to is temporary network used for the PPP link. This network is configured at connection time by the ewon is the network the PLC or PC you want to access remotely is connected to. The routing configuration consists in: Configuring the ewon to forward the IP packets coming from the address to address Configuring the Laptop to send every packet to the network via its PPP link. The PLC must be configured to reply to any packet coming from an another network than through the ewon. page 7 of 14

3.1.3 Forwarding Configuration The ewon must be instructed to route any packets coming from its PPP connection and which is not for it to its Ethernet network, so you have to open the Router (Filter)

9 3.1.3 Forwarding Configuration The ewon must be instructed to route any packets coming from its PPP connection and which is not for it to its Ethernet network, so you have to open the Router (Filter) configuration page: Check Enable IP Forwarding Validate by clicking on Update Router Setup 3.2 Laptop Configuration At connection time, the Laptop is automatically configured to have the ewon as the default gateway, which is exactly what we need to send the packet to the PLC. 3.3 PLC Configuration The PLC must have the ewon as a gateway for the network or to the default ( ) network. The way to configure the PLC depends of the kind of the PLC and will therefore not be shown in this document. 3.4 Testing the Connection Figure 6: Router Configuration Follow the same steps as described in one of the chapters above (See Testing the Connection on page 9.) page 9 of 14

10 4 Connection through Internet It is also possible to establish a remote collaboration using Internet to access the ewon. To achieve this, we need the ewon to call an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and to tell us the IP address it has been assigned by the ISP. We will here describe the easiest way to ask the ewon to call the ISP: the callback. By callback, we mean that we call the ewon with a normal phone, let ring few times and hang up. After a defined number of seconds, the ewon will call the ISP and establish the connection. The ewon will then send an containing its PPP IP address. 4.1 ewon Internet connextion configuration ewon Intenet connection - ewon PPP configuration The first step is to update the Dial up (PPP) configuration: Set the Call direction allowed to Incoming and Outgoing Set the Server Phone Number, User Name and Password as instructed by your ISP Click on Update Dialup Setup A message tells the configuration has been updated. We will now configure the callback mechanism. Now open the Callback configuration page. 12 4.2 Callback Testing Take a standard phone and call the ewon Let the phone ring four times (See Callback configuration on page 11. above), then hang up. Wait for the ewon to connect to the ISP and to get its IP address. (This can take a moment) Check your . 13 4.2.1 NAT and Transparent Forwarding Two problems must be solved when connecting through Internet: We cannot access anymore the PLC directly with its IP address like we could do it with a direct phone connection. The sender address of IP packets sent on Internet by the PLC must be set to the ewon PPP IP address The first problem is solved by a mechanism called transparent forwarding and is a built-in facility of the ewon. The second problem is solved by another ewon built-in service: the NAT (Network Address Translation) Thos two services are enabled from the Router (Filter) configuration page: Check the Enable IP Forwarding box Check the Enable NAT box Check the Enable Transparent Forwarding box. 14 4.3 Starting the Remote Collaboration Call the ewon as we have done to test the callback mechanism (See Callback Testing on page 12.) Enter the address that has been transmitted in the in your Internet browser Enter adm as Login and Password The main page has changed and now looks as follows: Set the Connect To field to the PLC IP address Click on Connect From now on, every packet sent to the ewon will be forwarded to the PLC but for the port 81 which leads to the ewon web page. Indeed, we must be able to connect to the ewon web page to close the PPP connection or change the Transparent forwarding address.
