Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 3 of 13 Progress Report on the APII R&D Testbed Network Project in Japan May INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW In Apri 2008, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) started with the operation of the JGN2plus project. JGN2plus represents an advanced testbed network to support R&D of the New Generation Network (NwGN) promoted by NICT since The mission of JGN2plus is to provide a platform for new R&D activities and leading-edge experiments in the field of network technology. In order to make research and development activities more efficient, the project is managed by the Otemachi research center which was founded in April 2008 and is located at Otemachi in downtown Tokyo. The JGN2plus project has its own research theme called Research and Development on Operations and Management for New Generation Network. This theme is further subdivided into seven resarch projects as depiced in Fig.1. Fig.1 Research projects supported by NICT

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 4 of 13 Research topic 5 is concerned with international collaboration which involves also the management of all activities between Japan and Korea under the Asia-Pacific Infocommunication Infrastructure (APII). Figure 2 gives an overview of the network used by Otemachi RC for its international collaborations. 2. APII TESTBED ACTIVITIES 2.1 Background Fig. 2 Network for international collaborations The APII project's Record of Discussion (RoD) was exchanged at the director general meeting in Seoul in 1997, and a 2 Mbps Japan-Korea ATM link (APII JP-KR link) was established in This link was temporarily upgraded in preparation for some events and experiments, one of which was the first Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) experiment for the Super Computing conference in At the APAN Osaka meeting in 1999, a temporary 45 Mbps bandwidth was used for a high-quality remote conference between Japan and Korea using DVTS. In 2000, the APII JP-KR link was then permanently upgraded to 8 Mbps. One of the link s purposes has been to provide connectivity for the Asia-Pacific region. The link was therefore used for Asia-Pacific collaboration on research activities even after Korea started its direct connection to USA. As a result, the link between Japan and Korea was soon used at the maximum of its capacity. In 2001, the bandwidth was saturated and experimental technology with Quality of Service (QoS) had to be introduced to reserve bandwidth for high-priority communications.

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 5 of APII and related links APII Japan-Korea (JP-KR) link The city Fukuoka is located on the north side of Japan's southwestern island Kyushu and lies opposite across the Sea of Japan to the city Busan on the south side of the Korean peninsula. Because they are geographically separated by only about 250 km, these two cities historically have had a close economic and cultural relationship. The distance between them is short enough that an optical fiber cable without a repeater facility can be used. Therefore, the Korea Japan Cable Network (KJCN) fiber system was established between them. First, the APII JP-KR link with a 1 Gbps bandwidth for the KJCN was introduced in the Japan-Korea APII testbed in The APII JP-KR link speed was then upgraded from 1 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps in 2005 and from 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps at the end of APII Japan-China (JP-CN) link A 2.5 Gbps link between Tokyo and Hong Kong was established in April NICT is being connected to the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) and Chinese Science and Technology Network (CSTNET) with separate channels at 1 Gbps respectively. NICT has exchanged a Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with Tsinghua University, China as well as the Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to establish joint research activities utilizing these links. In 2008, in the course of upgrading the network configuration in Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong Internet Exchange (HKIX) point were directly connected to the JP-CN link, too. Price of Wales Hospital of CUHK is well known for its endoscopy training center and HKIX is famous to be one of the biggest Internet exchange points in the Asian area. The JP-CN link is used not only to access China but also other Asian areas. Fig.4 APII links (JP-KR 10 Gbps link and JP-CN 2.5 Gbps link)

2.2.3 Research and Education Network (R&E Network) Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 6 of 13 Besides activities related directly to APII, the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the USA started the International Research Network Connections (IRNC) in 2004 and IRNC-2 will soon start within this year. IRNC adopted five network projects such as Gloriad, Transpac and so on. In addition, the third generation Trans-Eurasian Information Network (TEIN3) completed the circuit preparations and started its operation. Figure 3 gives an overview of the R&E Network in the Asia Pacific are including the bandwidth data with their link owner's names. Till the last year, South Asia was located beyond Europe in the Internet distance from the Asia-Pacific area. But now, South Asia is connected with the Asia-Pacific area directly. 2.3 Activities to be updated (since April 2009) Fig. 3 Asia Pacific Backbone Topology NICT conducts APII IPv6 R&D Testbed Project experiments in cooperation with APEC economies. The following summarizes a few noteworthy examples Solar Eclipse

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 7 of 13 On July 22 nd, 2009, the solar eclipse was observed in the east and south-east Asian area. The special case of this event was the area of the total eclipse ran the residential area.(fig. 5) Fig. 5 the Total Solar Eclipse Belt For such reasons, a lot of broadcasting projects both on R&E networks and on the commercial networks were planned. JGN2plus received 6 proposals related with this solar eclipse. Figure 6 is showing the broadcasting configuration mainly on the R&E networks. Characteristics of this event were as follows. Several projects were proposed and all the projects were active at the same time. Because the total eclipse belt covered a lot of cities, several places could generate the contents. Because the contents sources and receivers were distributed, the communication covered the multiple R&E networks and the commercial networks. It was impossible to estimate the traffic load and the load of the Internet exchange points. Because that depends on the weather. Total bandwidth from the configuration (Fig. 6) is Gbps and one of the projects spent even more than 6.5Gbps

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 8 of 13 Fig. 6 Netowrk Toplogy for broadcasting the Solar Eclipse Some of the contents were on IPv6. One of these contents was generated at Iwo island. The video was compressed and was transferred to the Otemachi station of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) through the high speed Internet satellite KIZUNA which was launched in These contents were transferred to the Internet even with using IPv6 multicast. These activities were organized by WIDE projects. They prepared two kinds of the video for this. One is the high quality video by MPEG2 and another one is the consumer quality video by MPEG SuperComputing 2009 At SuperComputing 2009 which is one of the biggest high performance computing conferences and expositions, NICT again held the booth. In 2008, perfsonar which is the middleware of monitoring the network status showed the demonstration of the block diagram style weather map betweeen SC08 and Japan sites. In 2009, perfsonar became the regular service in JGN2plus already and this time, weather map showed on the google map (TM). At SC09, Korean universities atteneded to show the demonstration at their own booths and perfsonar map could give them the performance between their area and SC09. Dynamic Circuit Service (DCN) inter-connectivity between the several implementations was shown in the booth, too. The tiled display wall (TDW) showed the cultural heritage analysis with using the signal analysis technology.

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 9 of 13 Figure 7 Network Ulitization Graphics (Weather Map) over Google Map We also saw collaboration with National Center for High-Performance Computing of Chinese Taipei on cultural heritage analysis and visualization. Contents of Japan and Chinese Taipei were exchanged for visualization on each other's TDW system at the SC09 site Asia Forum on Information and Communications Technology 2009 (AFICT 2009) AFICT was the workshop by one of the divisions of NICT. Their scope was the mobile technology but, in 2009, the scope was upgraded to the ICT technology. AFICT moved 4 cities, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Bangkok. In Bangkok, NICT implemented the medical demonstration by Kyushu University Hospital over DCN. The medical applications always require the security especially for the personal information. DCN can divide the circuit for their own use by the users. Unfortunately, this demo was the single domain demonstration, that is, the conference place was in the NICT, JP domain. Inter-domain demonstration will be done at the next trial.

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 10 of 13 Figure 8 Network Configuration of Dynamic Circuit Network of AFICT Snow Festival 2010 In 2010 winter, JGN2plus tried to broadcast the Snow Festival scene with using the network virtualization. This time, four slices were designed and the inter-domain DCN experiment could get the success during this experiment. During this snow festival experiment, the following 4 dynamic circuit protocols were experimented on the same physical network with virtual slices enabled. Openflow slice with broadcasting content from Sapporo to Osaka DCN(ION) slice with broadcasting content from Kochi to Seoul PCE/VNTM slice with large data transferring from Sapporo to Osaka NetConf slice with large data transferring from Okinawa to Osaka (See Figure 9: Diagram of Snow Festival Experiment) These network experiments were conducted with collaboration with TV broadcasting companies, and through this experiment, operation and maintenance challenges were discovered in the virtualized environment with dynamic circuit protocols.

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 11 of 13 Figure 9: Network Diagram of Snow Festival Experiment KMD Netband-I Event As part of Digital Camera project, Live Event between Korea and Japan was shot on November 2 nd, The demonstration scope was the live music fusion between these two countries over this APII JP-KR link. There were more than a thousand participants in the both demonstration places Medical demonstrations at 29th APAN Meeting During the APAN29 (Sydney, Australia), Kyushu University Hospital and the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital lead the APAN medical working group. This time they tried to show the medical video activities with using the compressed high definition video (HDV) as well as the regular DVTS. HDV can provide the wider range of the visual field and they tried to evaluate this matters. 3. Future Works

Subsequent amendments approved by BM1, Mar 2006 Endorsed by AMM, Nov 2005 Annex G Page 12 of 13 Along with the APII activities, NICT and National Information Society Agency, Korea (NIA) have been holding monthly teleconference meetings. One of the results of this meeting established the sensor network working group in APAN. About the collaboration about perfsonar, NICT set some perfsonars in JGN2plus, that is, at Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok. On the other hands, NICT had the collaboration with VINAREN, Vietnam and ThaiSARN, Thailand. They set up their own perfsonar inside their R&D networks and now, inside the perfsonar infrastructure, the monitoring data is available. With using some perfsonar applications, these data can be shown with some beautiful graphics. APII workshop has been held once a year is the NICT's turn. APII workshop 2010 will be held in Hanoi Vietnam on August 11th. This workshop is the joint workshop with the APAN Future Internet Testbed working group. At this workshop, research issues of the Future Internet will be discussed as well as the legacy activities in APII. This workshop will be opened for all the researchers. 4. Proposal of updating this project Before the several projects of APII started, the Next Generation Internet (NGI) was discussed. The reason for this was that the Internet grew up because the World Wide Web (WWW) service changed the Internet basic service items. WWW stressed the Internet the high performance communications. To improve this, the bandwidth and the protocols are being discussed and standardized. Actually, even a person can get the 1Gbps bandwidth in Japan and the video service became one of the regular services. But, the growth of the Internet began to destroy the Internet structure itself. For example, the IPv4 addresses are closed to be exhausted. Against this impact, some solutions were proposed. IPv6 is one of these proposals. The reconstruction of the Internet structure is another proposal. One example of this proposal is New Generation Internet (NwGI). Whe APII started, APII was defined as the testbed of NGI. And now, APII should be defined as the testbed of NwGI. To make this clear, we propose the project name update. The former name was APII IPv6 R&D Testbed Project and, from now on, this project should go froward with the name APII R&D Testbed Network Project. 5.
