Internet in China CNNIC releases Internet survey every half-year In the beginning of 2009, 298 million network users By mid of 2009, there are 338 million network users 155 million users use mobile phone to visit Internet Second largest Internet user community We also meet many challenges Source: CNNIC, July,

CERNET in general CERNET China Education and Research Network, supported by Ministry of Education, operation center located in Tsinghua Univ., backbone operated by a team from CERNET member universities Initiated in 1994, the largest education network 38 backbone gigapops,, with over 99.9% availability Over aggregated backbone bandwidth 480G Over 2000 member universities in over 200 cities Over 20million students and professors Providing DNS and other basic services Large scale applications, such as national distance learning, Connected with world major service providers Holding nearly 1 block of /8 IPv4 address space 4

CERNET: current status and experience Bandwidth always is not enough for Education and Research Network Students welcome new technologies and applications. Research and Education Network select new technologies and applications Lambda Networking Nation Wide Backbone for Research and Education Network Regional Network and Metropolitan Network Campus Network Need mature technologies for the above networks 5

Towards our Future Service Network How far? Foreseeable 5~8 years Based of IETF / ITU open standards High capacity of transport network IPv6 as network layer Future 4G wireless network New services networks Many other new technologies Traditional Telephone Network IP network (GPRS, 3G, Dialup, Cable, ) Transport Network User data Internet Future Network & Internet All devices connected (3G, WLAN, Ethernet...) Provide End to End services 7

Why we need IPv6 Population in China is more than 1.3billion Regardless on other usages, 1 IP address per person, we need At least 77 /8 IPv4 address According to ICANN in February 2009, only 32 /8 left in global pool, no sufficient IPv4 address available now The number of mobile phone subscribers in China is more than 687million by May, 2009 If all connected to Internet, more than 29/8 IPv4 addresses needed Sensor network / industrial deployment need more IP addresses 8

China Next Generation Internet - CNGI Project Initiated in 2002, it is one of the efforts to address the future Internet issue, approved by government in 2003 Leaded by National Reform and Development Committee, 170M USD equivalent Joint with MST, MOE,CAS, MII,NSFC,CAE, Main objectives Research project on next generation technologies CNGI Backbone: nation wide, 40 Giga POPs and 300 campus networks, international linkage Build advanced applications Transfer successful results to information industry All NSPs have involved in this project CERNET, China Telecom and other national Internet service providers 9

CNGI demonstration Demo networks setup in core networks, China Telecom, China Netcom/CAS, China Mobile, China Unicom, CERNET, China Railcom IPv6 Exchange Point set in Beijing and Shanghai 300 CPNs Over 110 Research and development projects Key technology Middleware Applications Massive and trial commercial deployment Terminal and network equipment Applications 10

Backbone run by service providers 11

CERNET China Education and Research Network The largest Education Network over 2000 campus networks and 20 million students and teachers CNGI - CERNET2 The IPv6 powered CERNET, now with over 100 universities, 1 million users, 30 cities

CERNET2 major facts CERNET2 is one of the CNGI backbone The largest network sponsored by CNGI CERNET2 backbone, 2.5G~10G Pure IPv6 backbone / IPv4 and IPv6 dual-stack campus network Provide basic services Provide multiple applications CERNET2 / IX6 International exchange center links to GEANT2/Internet2/TIEN3 25 CERNET2 Gigapops scattered in 20 major cities More than 160 university campus networks connected using 1G~10G More than 3Gbps traffic in Peak hour 13

Research topics in CNGI project Research and technology testing: Infrastructure for future Internet, QoS,, transition technology, security strategy and mechanism, large scale routing and multicasting, general service platform and others. Trail service and application demonstration: Sensor networks, home networking, P2P device and application, video conferencing system, multimedia VOD system, e-learning e platform, ITS, mobile and vehicular system, IPTV platform, large scale grid computing, virtual reality, convergent services, security solutions, storage system, and many others. General planning and testing requirement: CNGI general guideline, protocol testing and system evaluation methodology, IPv6 address planning, and others 23

Some of the focuses targeted Scalability and evolution mechanism of Future Internet infrastructure Trustworthy and convergent issue of large scale routing Large scale data transport capacity Cross border management issue for users in Multi-campus environment Multi-domain QoS solutions by Flow Label mapping Collaborative sampling and testing for service quality assurance others 24

SAVA: Source Address Validation Architecture Targeted security issue at its source Hierarchical Architecture (Multi-fence solutions) Solutions for IPv6 first (feasible way to deploy) Proactive protection Incrementally Deployable (Incomplete deployment still be beneficial) Provide incentive for deployment (The source address space of a network that deployed SAVA can not be spoofed by others) Performance, Cost and Scalability 25

Transition from IPv4 to IPv6 Transition mechanism for IPv4 / IPv6 co-existence and beyond IPv4 + NAT Short term solution Pure IPv6 Cannot reach the global IPv4, unacceptable Dual stack The cost increases, ISPs want others to deploy dual stack first IVI IPv6 The cost is the same as the single stack, but the IPv6 host can be reached by global IPv4 26
