Introduction In 1967, the Engineering Science Research Center of National Science Council (NSC), with the subsidy from Sino-American Foundation, set up a computer room in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) which was the predecessor of this computer center. The main purpose was to support NSC research projects and teaching in NCKU. In 1976, the approval was given by the Ministry of Education to formally establish the NCKU Computer Center on campus. The center was renamed the Computer and Network Center in 2000 (hereafter abbreviated as the center ). The center s missions are guided by the Committee of Computer and Network Center under direct supervision of the University President. The University President also appoints the director of the center. The current director, Dr. Jung-Hsien Chiang, is a professor in the department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. The aims of the center are to provide network and information services, install and upgrade the campus network, develop and maintain the university s administrative application systems, support hardware and software facilities, provide e-learning environment and also to provide consultations and educational training courses. The center is divided into four divisions. The main tasks of each division are listed as follows: (1) Administration and Inquiry Division 1-95

2 Services for various kinds of documents, consultation, management and maintenance of document computer system. Executes policies and coordination of affairs. Lists of center budget. Expense management for various disputed cases, projects or network usage. Computer use and execution management. Related-network seminars, lectures, and extension education training's registration. Management and maintenance of PC classroom. Others. (2) Network & Information Security Division Tainan area's TANET affairs. Campus backbone network management and maintenance. Campus dorm network management and maintenance. Account application management. Mainframe computer management and maintenance. Network servers management and maintenance. Includes WWW, BBS, Proxy, Mail, News, Netflow, DNS, etc. Organization of network-related seminars. Consulting services. Taiwan Advanced Research & Education Network support. (3) Information System Development Division Promotes the computerization of administration, develop and maintain the university's administrative computer system. Manages and designs e-campus computer-related software and hardware. Related research and application extensions Related system analysis, system development, consulting and usage training courses. (4) Teaching & Learning Technology Division E-learning platform established i. Establishing and maintaining Moodle e-leaning platform ii. Managing JoinNet system for video conferencing and distance 1-96

3 learning. iii. Establishing and maintaining MyTube video-sharing system Educational Training i. Providing various kinds of basic and application of information technology courses. ii. Providing training courses for university staff. iii. Providing career training courses. HPC (High Performance Computing Cluster) system maintenance i. Managing and maintaining HPC system ii. Providing training courses 2. Campus Network In order to provide fast and stable network services, the center began to plan and construct the campus fiber-optic network from 1988 to By the end of 1992, all campuses of Cheng-kung, Kuang-fu, Tzu-Chiang, Sheng-Li, and Chien-Kuo had been connected to the campus-wide FDDI backbone network. In 1999, the backbone of the campus network was upgraded to the Gigabit Ethernet. Computers of each department/division can now connect to the campus network at a speed of 100 Mbps. In 1993, the center began to install 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet network for all student dormitories. Until 2000, the total UTP nodes of dormitory networks had been approaching One occupant can work with the speed of 100Mbps per line. Also, the center is the TANET district network center in Tainan area. It provides the network links for the computer center of Tainan City, computer center of Tainan County, all of the colleges and universities, and the research centers of public institutions in the Tainan area. Moreover, to speed up the exchange rate, the center connects with many Information Service Providers (ISPs). Through the network facilities provided by the center, all the faculty and students can use UTP lines, wireless network, ADSL or dialup links to retrieve worldwide information at their offices, dormitories, conference rooms, campus recreation center or at home. 1-97

4 This helps the university toward the Internationalization. 3. Administration System Computerization (e-administration) In 1992, the university adopted a large-scale relational database INFORMIX system and formulated its campus Client/Server framework to facilitate its integrative task of campus-wide computerization of university administration. The center has made a great effort in the development and maintenance of computerization in the university administrative works. The most successful works are the personnel salary and insurance integration subsystem, the sign-in subsystem, the course searching subsystem, the student graduation inquiring subsystem, the official document subsystem, the course selection subsystem, the pc classroom booking and management subsystem, the student affair information subsystem, the departmental budget subsystem, the continue education subsystem, and the student network recruit subsystem. These successful computerizations enhance the efficiency of administrative routines, the saving of manpower and the improvement of organizational management. 4.
