15 AMI/HAN Reference Design IMI s AMI (Automated Meter Initiative Smart Metering) and HAN (Home Automation Network) demonstration system. The system has the following major components: 1. Console the control center of the system. The main component of the console is IMI s Gateway Platform. 2. Smart Meter connects an electric meter to the system 3. Smart Thermostat temperature sensor feedback and end user adjustment 4. Security intrusion detection and alarm 5. Air Conditioning controls the room temperature 6. Lights and Blinds controls lights and window blinds 7. PDA Bluetooth-enabled PDA to access the system

17 Console Features The control center Functions as the Zigbee Coordinator Functions: Receives data and information from the other components of the system: thermostat sensor, security sensor, smart meter, lights and blinds Makes decisions and controls the other AMI/HAN components: AC, alarm/siren, lights and blinds, smart meter Time-based automation / Scheduling control lights and blinds, enable security feature, and turn on/off AC based on a pre-set time schedule Web server (displays the smart meter s data) Built-in temperature sensor Bluetooth support (WiFi and other connectivity options available) LCD Display Push buttons for menu navigation GSM/GPRS Enabled (optional)

19 Smart Meter Features Communication interface to the electric meter for Reading the relevant energy counters Setting the effective tariff Zigbee-enabled to communicate with the Console Post-paid operation Reads the energy counter of the electric meter every 15 minutes Sends data to the console real-time GPRS enabled Communicates with the Utility Office Server (UOS) via TCP/IP over GPRS or through the Console using meter protocol with AES encryption (Phase 2) Sends data to UOS every hour (Phase 2) SMS gateway of Console (Phase 2) Can disconnect/reconnect the power to the house by command from the UOS (Phase 2) Can be customized for various meters and standards (ANSI, IEC, etc.)
