Incumbent HAN Standards
Demand Response Communication Architectures
HAN Reality Check 53 million market opportunity by 2014 Only 7% meters HAN enabled by 2014 Solution required to enable the 49 million HAN market
HAN Issues Communication standards continue to evolve Physical layer Wired: power line, coax, twisted pair Wireless: x, , Z-Wave, BlueTooth Data layer SEP, ClimateTalk, OpenADR, BACnet Energy systems interface (ESI) Utility Service provider Set-top box People move and so do their products
Computer Industry Model Universal Communication Module (UCM) Universal HAN Connectivity!
Enabling HAN Device Eco-System This is your HAN This is your HAN on USNAP Any AMI Network Fragmented Standards Open Connectivity
A Standard for a Modular Utility Interface A Simple Interface for Demand Response of Residential Devices Accelerates Availability of DR- Ready Devices for both HAN and DLC Programs One Appliance (SGD) Works with any Communication Device (UCM) One Communication Device Works with any Appliance Low Cost Impact on Appliances, Owner Installation Made Possible Communication systems can evolve without obsoleting the end device
USNAP Overview Established in 2009 as non-profit association Allows consumer products to connect to any type of HAN, LAN or WAN 37 members include utilities as well as suppliers of hardware, software and services Products available include thermostats, displays, load control, modules and software Currently harmonizing USNAP spec with EPRI Demand Response Socket Interface Specification
USNAP History and Outlook Research initiated California Energy Commission PIER USNAP Alliance Formed USNAP 2.0 Spec Released SDO Hand-Off & Ratification CEC reference design implemented by Radio Thermostat USNAP 1.0 Spec Released 1 st Retail Products Available USNAP USNAP & Compliance EPRI Program Harmonization Project *OpenADR v1.0:
USNAP 1.0 Products Communicating Thermostat Wi-Fi portal with iphone app Communication options ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave Radio Thermostat Company of America Remote Appliance Controller Controls 2 loads for HVAC, water heaters, pool pumps, and more Communication options ZigBee and RDS Entek Systems Communicating Thermostat iphone energy application Communications options Wi-Fi Intwine Energy

Design Options: Built-in vs. Modular Modular Insures against technological change Supports natural evolution of standards Reduces number of manufacturer SKUs Minimizes total solution cost Creates competitive, durable market Built-In Lowers manufacturing cost Limits customer choice Adds system cost by through ESI or gateway Encourages proprietary products
Technical Overview Physical connector & form factor Smart Grid Device API Physical & Data communications layers (chip-to-chip)
Technical Highlights Small footprint: 47mm x 41mm (less than 2 squared) Standard 10-pin connector costs < $0.10 each Cost delta to provide USNAP features is < $1.00 PCB option for larger radios and antennas Leverages low-level SPI bus for chip to chip comms RF Modules available for FM/RDS, FlexNet, Trilliant, WiFi, ZigBee, Z-Wave SELECT ATTENTION SCLK MOSI MISO RESET +3.3 Power Signal Ground Reserved Reserved
Physical Layer
USNAP only sends data in a single direction at a time The first side to assert the signal line is the sender The receiver will always send a 0xAA character during data transfer Data Link Layer
Application Layer Programmatic model Either module or device can initiate commands The UCM responsible for communicating with an external entity SGD only knows about the USNAP commands listed in spec UCM is responsible for passing through commands or remapping from other communication protocols
Command Structure Command structure uses three main concepts: get, set and send Commands with 0 data count are reads (getters) Commands with a non-zero data count are writes (setters) Sub commands with bit 7 == 0 are request commands, sub commands with bit 7 == 1 are replies to a request command (that correspond to bit 7 ==0) When a payload data structure has mandatory and optional fields, the mandatory fields are listed first
NIST Request: Merge the Two Specifications Research Interest Open Industry Collaborative End Device Manufacturers Communication System Providers Utilities 2 year activity Use-cases Requirements Specification Established Industry Organization Completed Collaborative 2.0 Specification Dec 2010 Existing Products in Market and on Retail Shelves Focus: Brand Marketing, Conformance and and Certification
Leveraging of Existing Industry Standards Allows for lower layer diversity for pass-through of standard protocols: Internet Protocol Smart Energy Profile OpenADR ClimateTalk Etc.
Key Merged-Interface Characteristic: Interoperability Project philosophy: it just works Minimal functionality enables basic demand response Supports minimal set of basic commands Enables pass-through commands for more sophisticated devices
Supports AC & DC Interfaces DC form factor Small foot print Supports battery powered devices AC form factor Supports PLC communication modules Keeps power supply cost in the module Enables local voltage and frequency monitoring Other form factors possible
March April May Tentative Timeline Lock down basic message format and grid commands Complete method for transport of upper level pass through messaging Draft new harmonized spec document June 1-14 Final committee review and edits June 15 Spec complete and ready for presentation June-July H2G review process August Official handoff to SDO CEA, IEEE, NEMA
