3 This document provides instructions to install a Brocade VDX switch in a 19 in. EIA rack in either a flush mount or recessed mount configuration. The document is organized as follows. Safety Installation guidelines Installing the switch in a four-post rack Safety Observe the caution notice in this manual. The caution notice has an ID, which is displayed in parentheses (C015). Use this ID to locate the translation of this caution notice in the Brocade Product Safety Notices. CAUTION Use safe lifting practices when moving the product. (C015) NOTE A fully populated VDX weighs kg (365lbs). It requires a hydraulic or assisted lift for installation. Installation guidelines ATTENTION To ensure adequate cooling, install the VDX with the air intake (port side) facing the cool-air aisle. Follow these general installation guidelines: Provide a space that is 15 rack units (15U) high, cm (24.09 in.) deep, and cm (17.22 in.) wide. One rack unit is equal to 4.45 cm (1.75 in.) To allow the quick removal of all power from the switch, use power sources that are easily accessible and located near the switch. Verify that the additional weight of the switch does not exceed the weight limits of the rack. Plan for cable management before installing the switch. Cables can be managed in a variety of ways, such as by routing cables above the switch, to either side of the switch, through cable channels on the sides of the rack, or using patch panels. Refer to the Brocade VDX Hardware Reference Manual for specific information. Ensure that all equipment installed in the rack is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection. Do not rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip. Installing the switch in a four-post rack Use the following instructions to install the VDX switch in a rack using the in. (68.58 to cm) rail kit. Time required Allow approximately one hour to unpack the rack kit, attach the hardware, and install the switch. Brocade VDX Four-Post Flush and Recessed Mount Rack Kit Installation Procedure 3 of 10

4 Tools required The following tools are required when installing the rack mount kit: Torque wrench with #2 Phillips screwdriver tip Flathead screwdriver Hydraulic or assisted lift with a minimum raise of 140 cm (55 in.) and a minimum capacity of 113 kg (250 lbs). 6 ATTENTION This hardware kit is a universal kit, and some hardware will not be used in this installation. Unpacking and installing the rack kit hardware 1. Unpack the rack kit hardware. 2. On each rail, loosen the four adjusting screws on the brackets and adjust the rails to the depth of your rack. You may have to remove the screws and then reinsert them if the brackets won t slide. Tighten the screws after adjustment. 3. Noting that the rails are designated Left and Right, install each rail in the rack using eight M6 x 1.0 x 12 screws, four screws on each end of each rail. Refer to Figure 2. Left and right designations are from the front of the rack. For posts with round holes - use four M6 x 1.0 x 12 screws with blue Loctite on the threads on each end of the rail assembly. For posts with square holes - use the four M6 x 1.0 x 12 screws with blue Loctite on the threads and alignment washers on each end of the rail assembly. 1 Left side rail 3 M6 x 1.0 x 12 screws 2 Right side rail FIGURE 2 Rack mount rails installed in a four-post rack 4. Tighten the screws to a torque of 29.2 to 36.5 in-lb (33.6 to 42 cm-kg). 5. Install either clip nuts or retainer nuts depending on whether your rack has round holes or square holes. 7 NOTE For posts with round holes, use the clip nuts on the rack uprights for securing M6 x 1.0 x 12 screws. For posts with square holes, use the retainer nuts. If you are mounting the switch in a recessed configuration, go to Recessed mounting the VDX in the rack on page 9. Flush mounting the VDX in the rack 1. Move the lift with the switch in front of the rack and adjust the height to match the installed rails. 2. If applicable, lock the wheels of the lift. CAUTION Use safe lifting practices when moving the product. (C015) 3. Gently slide the switch onto the rack, ensuring that it remains supported during the transfer. See Figure 4. Tighten the screws to a torque of 80 in-lb (92 cm-kg). 9 Recessed mounting the VDX in the rack 1. Remove the mounting flanges from the sides of the switch and attach the recessed rack ears to either side of the switch using the x.31 screws. 1 Screw locations FIGURE 5 Recessed rack ears attached to the VDX Move the lift with the switch in front of the rack and adjust the height to match the installed rails. 3. If applicable, lock the wheels of the lift. CAUTION Use safe lifting practices when moving the product. (C015) 4. Secure the switch to the equipment rack with six screws, three screws on each side. Tighten the screws to a torque of 80 in-lb (92 cm-kg). Use the retainer or clip nuts from the hardware package that accompanies the switch. 6. Attach the U-shaped air block to the recessed rack ears using the 8-32 x 3/8 screws, two for each side.
