What is Allstar Radio? The AllStar Link network consists of a number of large and small llidiid individuals and groups who wish ihto provide efficient large-area communications to the Amateur Radio public in their respective local l areas. This is done by providing a local VHF/UHF repeater system controlled by a Linux-based computer running the open-source Asterisk PBX telephone switch platform along with the app_rpt repeater/remote base controller/linking software module connected to the Internet.
What is Allstar Radio? The system provides linking of repeaters and remote base "nodes" with "nodes" on other systems of similar construction anywhere in the world, over the Internet via its IAX2 Voice Over IP (VOIP) protocol. AllStar Link is an organization devoted to the proliferation of this technology by providing a single central point of organization for public use of the technology.
Comparisons
Comparison of Amateur Radio VOIP systems Free Stable Echolink Not open source limited api Lower audio quality GSM half duplex Global System Mobile Relatively easy to use Large user base Mostly computer or cell phone originated Limited capability Poor choice for computer linking
Comparison of Amateur Radio VOIP systems IRLP Internet Radio Linking Protocol Not open source requires board purchase Good audio quality ADPCM half duplex Adaptive Differential Pulse-Code Modulation Smaller user base Only radio originated Limited capability Limited connectivity
Comparison of Amateur Radio VOIP systems Allstar Fully open source - free Excellent audio quality full duplex Choice of codecs Smaller user base Radio, phone and computer originated Endless capability and connectivity Low cost Echolink and other service bridges
Comparison of Amateur Radio VOIP systems Other formats Mostly proprietary Varying audio quality Skype, Wires, Dstar, DMR, etc. Wide-coverage Internet t t Repeater t Enhancement System
Asterisk
Asterisk Allstar Radio VOIP History In 1999, Mark Spencer started a Linux software company The company grew and needed phone services Available systems were very expensive Wrote their own PBX software Private Branch Exchange Formed a company called Digium in 2001 Their software now used to run phone systems for thousands of companies worldwide.
Asterisk Allstar Radio VOIP History of app_rpt app_rpt (an Application Program Interface) was written to allow additional programs to extend capability of Asterisk Written by Jim Dixon, WB6NIL, and Steve Rodgers, WA6ZFT, (mid 2000's) for fulfill need for a repeater controller and VOIP interface. Original system used a Quad PCI radio interface card Later used a USB sound card interface
Asterisk Allstar Radio VOIP Features Linux operating system very well supported Fully open source Easy to modify and extend the code Easy to install and maintain Extremely low power consumption Excellent voice quality Ability to select CODECS Great for restricted antenna areas gives feel of radio Allows public or private connections Any number of nodes can be connected together Connection process totally at the discretion of the user Unlimited servers and nodes per single IP address
Asterisk Allstar Radio VOIP Full Duplex Features (cont.) Integral repeater controller Connections to/from Phone PBX sip, iax Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a communications protocol for the purpose of controlling multimedia communication sessions. Internet telephony, business IP telephone systems, service providers and carriers use SIP. IAX was created by Mark Spencer to improve problems related with SIP in VOIP. Bandwidth usage is less than SIP since the messages are binary instead of text messages. No single point of failure Build the system the way you want
Asterisk Allstar Radio VOIP CODECS A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal. ULAW (pronounced mu-law) is an encoding commonly used in North America and Japan for digital telephony. 64Khz Lossless Excellent quality Least used ILBC Internet Low-Bitrate Codec Low Bandwidth Codec 1/3 BW of g726aa Very close to g726 quality G726aa modified G726a 48Khz sample rate Very good quality Most used GSM Very low sample rates Low bandwidth Fair quality Seldom used for VOIP
