Abstract As home energy use is increasing and renewable energy systems are deployed, home energy management system (HEMS) needs to consider energy consumption to minimize the energy cost. This paper designs smart home device descriptions and standard practices for demand response and load management Smart Energy applications needed in a smart energy based residential or light commercial environment. The control application domains included in this initial version are sensing device control, pricing and demand response and load control applications. Keywords- Home Energy Management System, ZigBee, Result & Discussion, Energy saving, Conclusion. I. INTRODUCTION The current energy crisis has required significant energy reduction in all areas. The energy consumption in home areas has increased as more home appliances are installed. This paper is extended from a preliminary work.wireless personal area network and wireless sensor networks are rapidly gaining popularity, and the IEEE Wireless Personal Area Working Group has defined no less than different standards so as to cater to the requirements of different applications. The ubiquitous home network has gained widespread attentions due to its seamless integration into everyday life. This innovative system transparently unifies various home appliances, smart sensors and energy technologies. The smart energy market requires two types of ZigBee networks for device control and energy management. Today, organizations use IEEE and ZigBee to effectively deliver solutions for a variety of areas including consumer electronic device control, energy management and efficiency, home and commercial building automation as well as industrial plant management. We present the design of a multi-sensing, heating and air conditioning system and actuation application the home users: a sensor network-based smart light control system for smart home and energy control production. This paper designs smart home device descriptions and standard practices for demand response and load management Smart Energy applications needed in a smart energy based residential or light commercial environment. The control application domains included in this initial version are sensing device control, pricing and demand response and load control applications. This paper introduces smart home interfaces and device definitions to allow interoperability among ZigBee devices produced by various manufacturers of electrical equipment, meters, and smart energy enabling products. The rest of the paper is organized as follows. Section II describes the proposed HEMS architecture in detail. Section III shows several implementation results for the architecture. Finally, section IV concludes this paper II. ARCHITECTURE OF SMART HOME ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM A. System Architecture Although numerous efforts are taken for energy-efficient home appliances. Energy management can achieve more energy-efficient home. Fig.1 shows the system architecture of smart HEMS that considers energy-consuming home appliances. A new architecture for energy efficient home is proposed. The energy consumption of home appliances and lights is monitored through an energy measurement and communication unit (EMCU) that is installed in each outlet and each light. The EMCU measures the energy and power consumption of home appliances and lights. It periodically transfers the measured values to the home server. The EMCU communicates with rights Reserved Page 7

2 home server using ZigBee which is well known as a low power communication. The home server gathers the energy and power data from the outlets and lights through a ZigBee access point (AP). It analyzes the gathered data and makes the energy and power usage profile of home appliances and lights. Through the home server, users can browse the energy and power information and figure out the energy usage of home appliances and lights. Fig. 1. Architecture of smart home energy management (HEMS) B. Home Server The home server manages the EMCUs installed in outlets and lights through a ZigBee AP. The home server monitors and controls the EMCUs through the node control block. The device table manages both home appliances and lights connected to the EMCUs. The home server identifies home appliances and lights using this table. The energy consumption data of home appliances and lights are stored in the information database. The aggregated data are continuously accumulated over time. The energy consumption manager (ECM) analyzes the aggregated data over time, day, week, and month. It creates energy consumption information such as: energy use patterns of home appliance and lights; total energy use pattern of the whole home. The home server figures out the energy consumption information of a home using this energy consumption manager. C. INDIVIDUAL WIRELESS SENSOR NODE ARCHITECTURE A functional block diagram of a wireless sensing node is provided in Figure 2. A modular design approach provides a flexible and versatile platform to address the needs of a wide variety of applications. For example, depending on the sensors to be deployed, the signal conditioning block can be re-programmed or replaced. This allows for a wide variety of different sensors to be used with the wireless sensing node. Similarly, the radio link may be swapped out as required for a given applications wireless range requirement and the need for bidirectional communications. Figure 2. 3 The microprocessor has a number of functions including: 1. Managing data collection from the sensors 2. Performing power management functions 3. Interfacing the sensor data to the physical radio layer 4. Managing the radio network protocol D. ZigBee ZigBee is a wireless standard based on IEEE that was developed to address the unique needs of most wireless sensing and control applications. ZigBee technology is low cost, low power, a low data rate, highly reliable, highly secure wireless networking protocol targeted towards automation and remote control applications. ZigBee framework is made up of a set of blocks called layers. Each layer performs a specific set of services for the layer above. As shown in Figure 3. The IEEE standard defines the two lower layers: the physical (PHY) layer and the medium access control (MAC) layer. Figure 3. Zigbee Framework The IEEE has two physical layers that operate in two separate frequency ranges: 868/915 MHz and 2.4GHz. Moreover, MAC sub-layer controls access to the radio channel using a CSMA-CA mechanism. III. RESULT AND DISCUSSION A. Software Output: As shown in figure 4, the slave-1 output can be shown by using VB software. The software output consisting of slave-1 and slave-2 outputs with their readings, set points and the relay status of the operation. Figure 4. 4 As shown in figure 5, the slave-1 output can be shown by using VB software. The software output consisting of slave-1 showing the set point reading 20 and the gas concentration As the gas concentration exceeds than set point reading the relay gets ON. The output relay status can be shown in figure18 as red indication. Also Figure 5. shows the graphical representation of gas concentration vs time. Figure 5. The software output consisting of slave-2 showing light intensity set point reading 50 and the light intensity reading As the light intensity exceeds than set point reading the relay gets OFF. 5 As shown in figure 7, the slave-2 output can be shown by using VB software. The software output consisting of slave-2 showing the temperature set point reading 40 and the temperature reading30.5. As the temperature than set point reading the relay gets OFF. The output relay status can be shown in figure 7 as green indication. Energy Saving Considering the whole discussion of this chapter we are concluded that the Smart Energy Management System is saving the energy & cost effective system. IV. CONCLUSION The smart home control system based on wireless sensor networks to make home area networks more intelligent and energy efficient. We suggest new ubiquitous home scenarios based on the proposed system. We expect that our work contributes towards the development of energy savings. In short, these systems save money and make good sense. Efficient way for wireless data logging of hazardous applications, less time delays & quick response time. A novel architecture for a proposed system is implemented, using the relatively new communication technology ZigBee. Available Online at : Page 11

6 Advanced energy management systems will eventually become common in residential and commercial buildings because occupant behaviors have a significant impact on the total energy consumption. Our prototype system achieved an energy savings of 6% - 10% by implementing a relatively simple control policy.
