IT challenges of an integrated system for remote monitoring and control of expenditure and payment of electricity Ljubiša Jovev IRVAS International d.o.o ICT Forum 2010 Niš, November 2-4
Introduction Smart metering devices, AMI and AMR have caused great interest in recent years Key factors: EU Directives for energy and consumer services Market liberalisation Saving and Ecology New requirements: Interoperable solutions for the reading device A unified approach for electricity, gas, water and wind
Smart Metering Market Enablers and Growth Drivers Governmental Mandates EU Plan 20% reduction of Energy consumption by 2020 Deregulations (leading to separation of energy transport and energy provider) USA: $4.3 B for direct investment in the smart grid through the stimulus package. China $9.7B investment to deploy AMR/AMI EPS planira 80 mil EUR investicija Utility Companies Optimization of the distribution infrastructure and prevention of potential black-outs (peak management) More services to End consumer Renewable Energies and E Vehicle Residential Solar and Solar Farm decentralized productions Consumer production sold back to the Energy Provider Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) Cars In-Building customer comfort e-thermostats, smart & nice-looking displays, home-automation End-customer energy savings (controls when, how, how much)
Market 1.4 billion e-meters installed in the world, but many are the electromechanical and less than 10% are Smart/Connected First deployment of AMR demonstrated 4-5 Years ROI (ENEL) Decentralization of electricity generation (Solar, Wind, PHEV) More transparency for customer driving energy saving (5-10%) Deployment of Smarter Grid on going driven by Governments and Utilities.

Why DLMS/COSEM?
Challenge
Chellenge : Smart meter Smart meters, also named intelligent meters, is the term used for measuring instruments that in addition to actual measurements alone provide in the same device a certain level of measurements data processing, for the purpose of making energy consumption data more transparent. Smart metering systems generally include some of the following features: Provision of a real-time information on energy consumption that is available immediately or via some form of download to either energy suppliers and consumers or both Two-way communication between energy suppliers and the meter to facilitate services such as tariff switching An internal memory to store consumption information and patterns An easy to understand, display unit which might include: energy costs, indicator oflow/medium/high use Compatibility with PCs/mobile phones DLMS certificate Illustration of demand-side management options (e.g. tariffs which charge high prices for peak demand, but lower than average prices for off-peak etc). Smart metering is based on effective communication with the remotely located meter. This is enabled by a Wide Area Network (WAN).
Challenge : WAN implementation Leased line - PTSN Wireless GSM (mobile telephone) GPRS (mobile telephone) 3G (possibility to use TCP/IP) WiMax (IEEE standard for fixed wireless alternative to cable broadband and PTSN TCP / IP Access) WiFi PLC (Power Line Carrier) connection between concentrator and the meter ADSL
Challenge - LAN Implementation Users local networks WiFi Bluetooth Zigbee Z-Wave PLC UTP
Challenge- Collection, Processing and Visualisation

Challenge: Smart home
Challenge: Smart home
Conclusion The needs are obvious and great, and ICT has a key role in the further development Many questions are opened and "problems" apostrophized that need to be solved Unique opportunity and challenge for the entire IT sector
