Course Details 3(3-0-6) With 3 Credit 3 Hours of lecture Students should do the self-study at least 6 hours a week! 3 of 20
Course Description Needs and problems in data dissemination and communication. Layered and structuring of data and standards of information of OSI. Overview of data communication. Multiple linkage and single linkages. Physical standards. Electrical signals, data organization, data validation. Control of network and networking. Hardware and their utilization. Alternating circles, group protocols. Process to process communication. Fundamental concepts in group communication application programming. 4 of 20
Chapter 1 Introduction and fundamental terms 5 of 20
Data Communication is the handling and transmission of digital data over communication channels between computers and/or other devices (in general over the great distance) These 2 aspects must be included: Computer networks How the computers are connected? Which media can be use to transmit the data? How can I rule the access of the transmitting media? Protocols How the data exchange can be done uniformly? How can we achieve the realizable and effective transmission? 6 of 20
Fundamental terms Tasks of networks: Establish the connection (connectivity) for data transmission Enable effective and low-cost use Provide services that can be used from several applications Powerful transmission and quality of transmission 7 of 20
Fundamental terms Tasks of networks: Establish the connection (connectivity) for data transmission Enable effective and low-cost use Provide services that can be used from several applications Powerful transmission and quality of transmission 8 of 20
Fundamental terms Local Area Network (LAN) Corporation-wide networking, connect computers and others devices Network belongs to the company A few workstations to 1000 in one network Example: Ethernet, Token Ring Data transfer rate: up to 10 Gbps Types: Direct connection network (shared network) or switched network 9 of 20
Fundamental terms Wide Area Network (WAN) The distances are almost around the world Transmission media between companies (carrier) Fixed connections or dial-up connections Typical: X.25, ISDN, ATM (Asynchronous Tranfer Mode) Data transfer rate: up to 10 Gbps With costs (according to using time or data volumes) Switched Network 10 of 20
Fundamental terms Shared Network (direct connection) Point-to-point connection Multiple access, point-to-multiple point connection Wired or wireless connection 11 of 20
Fundamental terms Topologies Bus Topology 12 of 20
Fundamental terms Topologies Star Topology 13 of 20
Fundamental terms Topologies Tree Topology 14 of 20
Fundamental terms Switched Network Indirect connection 15 of 20
Fundamental terms Circuit Switching (conventional telephony) Throughout connection between participants Exclusive connection use for two partners Receiver must accept the messages immediately Network can t buffer, delay or recode Gauranteed bandwidth and constant signal runtime But: line is occupied, even if there is nothing to be transmitted Example: telephone network 16 of 20
Fundamental terms Packet Switching (message switching) Messages will be cut into fixed-size packets Packets will be transmitted to the node computers, buffered there and go on transmission over other nodes Physical circuit connection only exists between nodes Transfer rates can be various on the way Gauranteed bandwidth and constant signal runtime are possible but not always implemented Example: switched LAN, X.25, Frame Relay, ATM, IP-Switching 17 of 20
Fundamental terms Joint Network Network using uniform technology Switching nodes between networks using differrent technologies 18 of 20
Fundamental terms Definition Network A network is a connection structure for two or more terminals that are connected directly or indirectly. Or consisting of networks that are connected over switching nodes 19 of 20
Fundamental terms Data Packet Transmitting data (sequence of binary encoded information) will be sampled The sampling will be extended by management information Payload: sampling from the transmitting data or message Management information: Header Address information of sender and receivier Control information for different purposes Transmitting data Header Payload 20 of 20
