1 Fail safe LAN connectivity Client: One of the police offices in Gujarat. Customer's requirement: The customer wanted to establish LAN connectivity spread across 2 divisions i.e. division A and division B and 9 floors in each division of the building. Each division of the floors had about 3 nodes. The performance level required for the application was 10/100Mbps for nodes. The connectivity between the switches needed to be of 1000 Mbps. The connectivity between switch and server needed to be of 1000 mbps. There was a server in the EDP room. All the switches in 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd floors of division A & B needed to be connected through the backbone switch in the 5th Floor. Ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor of division A & B needed to be connected through the backbone switch in 2nd floor. There will be around 12 more nodes to be connected in each floor in future. In the 2nd phase of upgradation, there will be 15 more nodes in each floor. The network should be accessible by 492 police stations across the state. Currently, 2 switches in 2nd and 5th floors are connected to the State WAN switch, which is 5 kms away from the building. The customer preferred SNMP option in the devices. Summary of Dax solution: Dax recommended the customer to opt for 2 nos. of gigabit layer 2 backbone switches in 5th and 2nd floor of A division of the building, which caters to all users across 9 floors as mentioned. For all the users in each floor of the A & B division of the building, Dax recommended the customer to opt for 8nos of 24-port stackable, manageable access switches in 5th and 2nd floor of the A & B division of the building, which connects to the gigabit backbone switch in 5th and 2nd floors. The entire network was recommended to be secured through a firewall.

2 Details of Dax solution Backbone Switches (5th and 2nd Floors): For connecting 8 access switches in A & B divisions of the 5th and 2nd floors of the building, 1 server, interconnecting backbone switches and connecting the network to the firewall in the ground floor, Dax recommended 2nos of Dax 5044GS 8 port gigabit backbone switches in 5th and 2 nd floors. DX-5044GS has 4# 1000 baset ports and 4 open slots, accommodating choice of giga modules, namely 1000-T, 1000SX and 1000LX. 2 nos of 1000 baset ports of each of the switches was recommended to be used for connecting 4 nos. of access switches in 5th and 2nd floors of the Division A and B in the building. The 3rd and 4th port of the gigabit switches was to be used to interconnect the switches through 2 Gbps port trunking. One open slot of each of the switches was recommended to be loaded with 1no 1000 baset module to connect the switches to the firewall in the ground floor. Further, the 2 nd open slot of the switch in 5th floor was recommended to be loaded with another 1000 baset module to connect the 1000 mbps speed. User connectivity (2nd 5th floors): For connecting all the users across 9 floors of each division of the building, Dax recommended to stack 2nos of Dax Megastack in 5th and 2nd floors of each division of the building. Dax Megastack has 24# 10/100 mbps ports and 2 x 1000 mbps uplink slots. Two slots of each of the switches in both 5th and 2nd floors of the stack in A division were recommended to be loaded with 2nos. of 1000 base T module so as to provide connectivity to the backbone switch, interconnecting the switches in the stack and connecting the access

3 switches. All the users from 3rd to 8th floors of both the divisions of the building get connected directly to the Dax Megastack switches in the 5th floor. Users from ground floor to 2 nd floor in both the divisions of the building get connected directly to the Dax Megastack in the 2nd floor as desired. The existing switches can be used in future by connecting them directly to the backbone switches in 5th and 2nd floors of Division A of the building by loading one 1000 baset module in one of the free slots of the switch. In B division, 2nos. of Dax Megastack can be added in the stacks of both 5th and 2nd floors by loading 1 no. of 1000 base T module in the free slots of both the switches as well as the new switches as mentioned to be stacked. Firewall Recommendation: Option I: 2nos. software based firewall can be placed in the ground floor for each of the backbone switches in 2 nd and 5th of the building as desired. Dax recommended the purchase of appropriate firewall software externally and loaded in the servers. Server based hardware firewall (PCI firewall adapters in-built 1000 baset or 1000 base FX) may also be considered towards the said firewall requirement. The 1000 baset port in the server based hardware firewall would be connected to the switch in the 2nd and 5th floors as mentioned. The 1000base FX port of the server based hardware firewall may be used to terminate the optic fiber connectivity from Gujarat State WAN switch which is 5 kms away. Option II: Dedicated Box based firewall may also be considered. The giga copper and fiber ports may be plugged in and used in the same manner as mentioned above. Highlights of the solution: Fail safe connectivity: The backbone switches are connected through 2nos 1 Gbps port trunking. By aggregating the throughput of 2nos. of gigabit uplink ports, it provides 2 Gbps backbone bandwidth across the switches. Scalability: Dax Megastack switches have the capability to include the additional nodes by simply cascading /stacking another switch to it. Thus, in future network expansion is hassle free without any change in the existing set up. Zero configurations required for setting up the switch: All ports in the switch support auto detection of 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps speed depending on the configuration. In addition, the ports supports Auto MDI/MDIX with which the switch can automatically recognize if the port is connected to a network node or cascaded to a switch and connect accordingly. Fail Over / Redundancy Link:

4 Dax Megastack and DX5044GS switches support Spanning tree protocol, which enable the backup loops between switches. In case if any one of the Switch in the network fails including both Backbone and workgroup switches, the connectivity between the switches would function without fail by choosing the alternative path, thereby providing 100 % redundancy for the entire network Effective network traffic regulation: By implementing VLAN in Dax Megastack and DX5044GS switches, the broadcast traffic is restricted to specified workgroup. As a result, the broadcast traffic of a single segment does not reach another segment. This reduces the collision between domains and the network traffic gets regulated. Dax Megastack supports up to 128 VLAN groups. DX-5044GS support upto 256 VLAN groups. Comprehensive Cluster management: With support for Cluster management in Dax Megastack, up to 8 switches in a stack (or cascaded) is viewed as a single IP entity, enabling VLAN grouping and redundant links configuration between the switches from any web browser In-built Routing Function in the Switches: Software routing component is integrated in DAX Megastack as a standard offering. With this, the user has the choice of segmenting the network based on IP address as well, which is not otherwise possible in a plain Layer 2 switch. Supported IP routing protocols include RIP1, RIP2 as well as Static Routing. In-built web based configuration and Management software: The in-built in web based management software available in the Dax Megastack enables configuration of the switch stack from any PC running a web browser. Thus, the configuration solution is operating system independent. Support for Management: Dax switches provide SNMP Management features with default MIB2, Bridge MIB, Ethernet MIB and RMON MIB. Thus, the user can manage these switches from any industry Standard NMS software. Dax Megastack also supports web browser based configuration. Operating System Independency: Dax switches are operating system independent and PC / Server independent. Thus, when the user changes their operating system platform, all LAN connectivity devices would function normally without the need for change in the configuration. Versatile Uplink options: Dax Megastack switches have 2 open slots for a combination of 100fx or Gigabit uplink modules. The user can choose 2 100fx uplink ports or 2 # Gigabit uplink ports over either copper or Fiber. The user also has the choice of installing 1# 100FX uplink port, 1 Gigabit Uplink port and is not bounded by fixed configuration uplink modules. Supports Rate Control on each port in Dax Megastack Switches: The bandwidth on each port can be controlled. This control can be implemented at 10 levels (from 10% to 100%). Thus, PC's running machine critical applications can be allocated the highest rate i.e. 100 Mbps while client PCs which does not run any machine critical applications can be limited to a lesser transfer rate. This ensures that the available network bandwidth is utilized effectively through the network. With this, the overall traffic flow can be completely controlled.

5 Dax Megastack Supports RMON groups 1,2,3,9. Thus any industry standard management software such as HP open view can retrieve statistics from the switch for effective network management. Support for Monitoring Data Traffic in Dax Megastack switches: By enabling Port Mirroring feature in Dax Megastack, allows monitoring of port wise data traffic in real time, allowing network managers to keep better track of switch performance and make any changes or adjustments as required. Support for increasing the Bandwidth between the switches in Dax Megastack & Dax DX5044GS Switches: While a single Gigabit uplink connection gives a bandwidth of 2 Gbps between 2 # switches, using port trunking and every additional Giga trunk gives additional 2 Gbps uplink bandwidth between 2 # Dax Megastack /DX5044GS switches. Dax Megastack/Dax DX5044GS supports 3 groups of Port Trunk.
