1 Hardware Announcement February 23, 1999 Five New 8275 Switches Deliver Performance at an Attractive Price Overview With the price/performance characteristics of these new 8275 models, more customers than ever before can afford to support heavier traffic as their applications change or grow. IBM now makes it more affordable to add high-performance LAN and uplink capabilities. These new models are attractive offerings with copper and fiber workstation connectivity, along with high-speed uplink and aggregation capabilities. Ethernet Workgroup Switches The IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches (8275 Models 217 and 225) deliver affordable 10 Mbps performance to the desktop. The switches are fully featured with uplink options. In keeping with IBM s commitment to network management, these products offer Web-based, port mirroring, SNMP and RMON management capabilities. The switches have an illuminated control panel and menu buttons to allow the user to configure and view the status of the switch and its ports. The IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches are available in a 16-port (Model 217) or 24-port (Model 225) 10BaseT configuration. Both models come standard with a front-mounted 10/100BaseTX uplink port. Both models have two expansion slots on the back panel for installation of optional 100BaseFX or 10/100BaseTX modules for connections to a backbone or server. The IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches replace hubs for desktop connectivity, providing high performance and functionality at a competitive price. Fast Ethernet Workgroup Switches The IBM Fast Ethernet Workgroup Switches (8275 Models 318, 322, and 326) are high-performance Ethernet switches for medium to large workgroups requiring the flexibility of 10/100BaseTX or 100BaseFX client attachment along with high-speed uplink and server attachment. The Model 326 is a 24-port TX configuration, the Model 322 is a 12-port TX plus 8-port FX configuration, and the Model 318 is a 16-port FX configuration. The Models 318 and 322 are the first members of the Ethernet Switch product family to offer a significant number of 100BaseFX fiber ports for high-speed client attachment. In addition, all three models offer 1000BaseSX or 100BaseFX uplink ports. Room to Grow As you add traffic to your LANs, the new 8275 models offer client-side and uplink performance that has not been available at this price point. The different models allow you to mix both copper and fiber connections, making it easy to add more bandwidth to the desktop. As an alternative, you may want to use these new models to aggregate lower-speed hubs and switches to supply more overall bandwidth. 2 Description Ethernet Workgroup Switches The IBM 8275 Ethernet Workgroup Switch is available in a 16-port (Model 217) or 24-port (Model 225) 10BaseT configuration. Both models come standard with a front-panel expansion slot equipped with a 10/100BaseTX uplink port module and have two expansion slots on the back panel for installation of optional 100BaseFX or 10/100BaseTX modules for connections to a backbone or server. Illuminated Control Panel The illuminated control panel and menu buttons allow the user to configure and view the status of the switch and its ports. The control panel is password protected, and passwords can be set by navigating through the menu screens on the control panel. The control panel allows a user to: Configure ports and switch parameters Check the status of the switch and ports Set the IP address Check the version levels of the switch Display utilization information Set SNMP parameters Management/RMON Support The IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches include an EIA-232 port for configuration and management. Full-duplex is supported on the fixed 10BaseT and on 10/100BaseTX and 100BaseFX modules. Virtual Networking A VLAN is a related group of users that may communicate directly with one another and receive broadcasts from one another, yet may be geographically dispersed. On a network infrastructure built around switches, all endstations can communicate directly with one another and receive broadcasts from one another. In this type of network, virtual LANs are used when there is a need to control traffic patterns, to provide security, and to control broadcast behavior. With the IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches, a VLAN is defined as a group of ports that are part of a single multicast domain. All endstations connected to the group of ports can communicate with one another and receive broadcasts from one another. A broadcast packet received on a port in a particular VLAN will not be transmitted to ports that are not members of that VLAN. A VLAN must end at a router port and all traffic between VLANs must pass through a router. IBM Ethernet Workgroup switches support the IEEE standard-based 802.1q which enables the standard based VLANs and ensures the interoperability with other vendor s networking equipment through standard based VLANs. Optional Modules Modules for the rear-panel expansion slot on the IBM Ethernet Workgroup Switches are: 100BaseFX module 10/100BaseTX module These modules can be used in either the Model 217 or 225. Fast Ethernet Workgroup Switches The IBM 8275 Fast Ethernet Workgroup Switch offers three models for delivering high-speed connectivity to the workgroup. Three combinations of interface types are provided by these models to match the fiber and copper requirements in the workgroup. The three 8275 models are: Model ports 100BaseFX Model ports 100 BaseFX and 12 ports 10/100TX Model ports 10/100TX Each of the three models has two option slots and can be equipped with none, one, or two of the following optional uplink modules: 2-port 100BaseFX Fiber Uplink Module

Management/RMON Support The 8275 Fast Ethernet Workgroup Switches include an EIA-232 port for configuration and management. The ports can be managed through Telnet. Product Positioning The new 8275 Models 318, 322, and 326 fit in the middle of the Networking Hardware Division s (NHD s) Workgroup Networks Ethernet Switch portfolio in both price and features. These products fit above the 8275 Model 324 based on their high-speed uplink capability and below the 8271 family of products, which provide ATM connectivity as an option. Port density for fiber connectivity is available on the client side of the new 8275 models, a new addition to the Workgroup Networks product portfolio. Gigabit uplinks allow a tie into the Enterprise Ethernet switches. The 8275 Models 217 and 225 fit into the 10 Mbps switch segment of the product portfolio.
