Birman M.S. in Computer Science B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India Expected May, 2005 May, 2003 May, 1999 DISSERTATION Title: The Design and Applications of Virtualizing a Wireless Card Advisors: Prof. Kenneth P. Birman and Dr. Victor Bahl My thesis proposes a novel architecture, called MultiNet, for virtualizing wireless cards. MultiNet works by exposing multiple instances of a single wireless card and each virtual card can be independently configured on a different frequency channel. This virtualization architecture enables a new connectivity paradigm: a user can connect to multiple wireless networks using only one wireless card. This functionality was earlier not possible with compliant wireless cards. MultiNet facilitates the design of a number of new, useful wireless systems. In my thesis I use MultiNet to build systems that improve wireless capacity and enhance network management. Slotted Seeded Channel Hopping (SSCH) configures virtual cards on orthogonal channels and proposes a new scheduling algorithm to increase the capacity of wireless networks. Client Conduit uses MultiNet to provide connectivity to disconnected clients, and is a critical component of our architecture for diagnosing faults in wireless networks. I have built MultiNet and Client Conduit over Windows XP. This work has received a positive response from researchers and industry experts. The ideas in my thesis have resulted in five filed patents. A number of ideas are being transferred into the product groups of a leading software company. Some US and international universities are beginning to use MultiNet for a varied range of applications. Further, I am also assisting an ISP in Oregon to increase their network utilization using MultiNet. AWARDS Microsoft Research Graduate Fellowship Renewed after performance review Sage Fellowship at Telco Award for academic excellence at IIT, all 4 years Hitachi Award for best all-round student 1995 SBI Award for all India second rank in higher secondary exam 1995

3 INTERNSHIPS AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE TEACHING EXPERIENCE Research Fellow - Intern, Microsoft Research, Redmond May-Aug 2004 Worked on three different projects. Ported Native WiFi to work on Windows XP. Implemented Client Conduit and integrated it with MultiNet. Also, worked on a detailed delay analysis of packets in wireless networks, and its correlation with wireless conditions. Research Fellow - Intern, Microsoft Research, Redmond May-Sep 2003 Worked on three problems. Worked on a management infrastructure for wireless networks, and built a diagnostic utility for the next generation of wireless cards. Demonstrated our work to the VP of Windows Networking and received good reviews. Also looked at efficient Transmit Power Control (TPC) mechanisms in wireless networks. Research Fellow - Intern, Microsoft Research, Redmond May-Aug 2002 Worked on enabling simultaneous connectivity to multiple wireless networks using a single radio. Also worked on building a user level API to query and set parameters of wireless connections. This software, called WRAPI, is being successfully used by researchers at Microsoft. Also worked on efficient algorithms for the placement of Internet TAPs in Wireless Neighborhood Networks. Summer Intern, AT&T Labs Research, Florham Park Jun-Aug 2001 Was a member of the Home Networking Team in the Dependable Systems Group, and worked on efficient topology discovery protocol for wireless home networks. Research Assistant at Cornell Jan-May 2001 Jointly designed a bi-directional abstraction for unidirectional ad hoc networks as a member of the Spinglass group. Research Assistant at Cornell May-Aug 2000 Jointly developed a protocol for multicast reliability in mobile ad hoc networks as a member of the Spinglass group. INSTRUCTOR CS 414/415 Systems Programming and Operating Systems Spring 2005 Teaching this senior-level honors course with more than 70 students. In the academic year, this course has only been taught by full-time professors. Duties include designing the course material and assignments, administering exams, and coordinating teaching assistants. Will have sole-responsibility for this course. CS 415 Operating Systems Practicum Fall 2000 Designed the assignments for this course and gave weekly lectures. Also coordinated with teaching assistants, designed grading guidelines, graded programming assignments and gave final grades. CS 414 Operating Systems Summer 2000 Co-taught this senior course of 30 students with Venugopalan Ramasubramanian. Designed and delivered half the lectures. Designed and graded assignments, and gave final grades. TEACHING ASSISTANT CS 519 Computer Networks Prof. J. Matthews Spring 2002 Was responsible for designing, grading and administering a programming assignment on modifying the Linux networking stack. Assisted the professor in designing written assignments and another programming assignment for this course.
4 SOFTWARE SYSTEMS DEVELOPED MultiNet Allows a user to connect to multiple wireless networks using a single network card. The software runs over Windows XP and comprises a network layer driver and a user level service. The software works on Windows XP with all commercial wireless cards we have experimented. Client Conduit Provides connectivity to disconnected clients through a connected client using MultiNet. It involved modifications at the windows driver of the network card, at the NDIS intermediate driver level of Windows and at the user level. A lot of kernel hacking was done to get the system working on Windows Longhorn and XP. Native WiFi Dump Utility 2003 This utility allows a user to capture IEEE packets for Native WiFi cards over the Windows XP platform. The user can specify the filters for the packets to be captures. This utility, which resides in the kernel, captures the requested packets, and passes them to the user. A parser at the user-level parses the fields of packet headers, and presents a formatted output. WRAPI 2002 This version of the Wireless Research API allows a user to query and set wireless parameters using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). It works over Windows XP, and is successfully being used by people at Microsoft Research. Software DSM 2000 I built a software distributed shared memory system (DSM) over a Linux cluster using the Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA). PATENT Methods and Systems for Connecting Disconnected Clients to Infrastructure APPLICATIONS Networks, with Atul Adya and Victor Bahl Methods and Systems for Detecting Performance Degradation and Establishing Its Cause in Wireless LANs, with Atul Adya, Victor Bahl and Lili Qiu Methods and Systems for Inferring Network Performance and Diagnosing Faults in Wireless Networks, with Atul Adya and Victor Bahl Slotted Seeded Channel Hopping for Capacity Improvement in Wireless Multihop Networks, with Victor Bahl and John Dunagan On the Placement of Internet TAPs in Wireless Neighborhood Networks, with Lili Qiu, Kamal Jain and Mohammad Mahdian MultiNet: Enabling Simultaneous Connections to Multiple Networks Using a Single Radio, with Victor Bahl and Pradeep Bahl Adaptive Topology Discovery in Hybrid Networks, with Christof Fetzer and Karin Högstedt EXTERNAL REVIEWER PERSONAL DETAILS Infocom 2005, ICDCS 2005, Transactions on Mobile Computing 2005, JSACs 2005, PODC 2004, Mobicom 2004, IWQoS 2004, USENIX 2004, WCNC 2004, SECON 2004, Infocom 2004, Transactions on Mobile Computing 2003, Infocom 2003, Mobicom 2002, DISC 2002, ICDCS 2002 CITIZENSHIP: Indian VISA STATUS: F-1
