5 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND OTHER SELECTED PROJECTS 12/ /2017 Pretzel: a private service Conceived, initiated, designed, implemented, evaluated, and led work on Pretzel, a private service in which contents are encrypted end-to-end by default and yet the service provider is able to run proprietary value-added functions (e.g., spam filtering) over the contents. Pretzel uses a state-of-the-art secure two-party computation (2PC) crytographic protocol to achieve its security properties. It optimizes this protocol for efficiency. I presented Pretzel at SIGCOMM /2013 3/2016 Popcorn: a private media delivery service Conceived, initiated, designed, implemented, evaluated, and led work on Popcorn, a private Netflix-like media delivery system in which the content of users requests (i.e., which movie a user is watching) is hidden from the media content distributor (e.g., Netflix). Popcorn relies on private information retrieval (PIR) cryptographic protocols for its security properties. For efficiency, it tailors these protocols to the media setting. I presented Popcorn at NSDI 16. 5/2013 4/2014 Bolt: secure cloud storage for smart homes As a research intern at Microsoft Research Redmond, designed, implemented, and evaluated Bolt, a cloud-based storage system that securely stores (and allows sharing of) data generated by devices in smart homes. Bolt uses standard cryptographic primitives (e.g., encryption, hashing, key regression) but applies them efficiently to the time-series data generated by smart homes. I presented Bolt at NSDI /2012 4/2013 Albatross: an accurate failure detection service Contributed to the design, implementation, and evaluation of Albatross, a failure reporting service that detects failures (e.g., host crashes, network partitions) quickly and reliably (i.e., no false positives). Albatross is targeted to data centers. Its benefits, over end-to-end timeouts based traditional failure detectors, are lower service downtimes and simpler application logic. Albatross was presented at Eurosys 15. 8/2011 4/2013 Pigeon: a new interface for failure detection Contributed to the design, implementation, and evaluation of Pigeon, which unlike Albatross (that sometimes shuts down system components in favor of accurate reports), embraces inaccuracies. It expands the failure detection interface from binary up/down reports to one that makes inaccuracies explicit. The benefit of the expanded interface is lower service downtime. I presented Pigeon at NSDI 13. 7/2009 7/2011 Energy-aware scheduling for the Linux kernel While at IBM software labs, I worked in the CPU Energy Management team within the Linux Technology Center (LTC). I refactored the CPUIdle framework (that puts idle CPUs to sleep) of the Linux kernel and ported it to PowerPC. My modifications to the Linux kernel source code were accepted into the kernel s main code repository. The findings on the energy savings were presented at Linux Plumbers Conference 10. 8/2008 5/2009 Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of FriendFeed As an undergraduate student, I studied characteristics of FriendFeed: an online social network that aggregates feeds from other online social networks. I investigated both the static and growth characteristics of FriendFeed s friendship graph. The findings were published at ICWSM 09 and IMC 09. 5/2007 7/2007 Document image cleanup for OCRopus As a research intern at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, I developed a module for OCRopus, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system, to clean scanned images of documents. The module helped improve OCR accuracy and was included in the release of OCRopus right after the internship.
