APPLICATION NOTE Avaya 4600 Series IP Telephones (Gen-1 / Gen-2) Modular Configuration Power Options Issue 1.2 April 11, 2003 (CID 93139) Abstract The purpose of this document is to define the many power schemes available for the Avaya 4600 Series IP Telephones. This document also provides a comprehensive list of the power supplies, cables, and ordering information available for those components. The information presented here has been compiled from Avaya product documents as well as documents gathered from various sources. Page: 1 of 25

1. Introduction The Avaya 4600 Series IP Telephones were designed to be flexible with regards to powering since multiple powering methods involving various power sources exist. Some of these powering solutions require the use of special cabling that has been designed specifically for the Avaya 4600 Series Telephones. 2. Background To meet the critical needs of the business, two generations (Gen-1 and Gen-2) of the 4606, 4612, and 4624 IP Telephones were developed. The second generation (Gen-2) IP Telephones added Power over Ethernet to the original IP Telephone capabilities. Power can be provided, either Local or Centralized, to the IP Telephones by one of the following four methods (applicable to 4606, 4612, and 4624 only): 1. Power over Spare Pairs pins 4/5 (GRD) & 7/8 (-48V) of RJ45 connector 2. Power over Data/Signal Pairs pins 1/2 (-48V) & 3/6 (GRD) of RJ 45 connector 3. Power over, Traditionally, pins 7 (-48V) & 8 (GRD) of RJ45 connector 4. Power via the Barrel or on the bottom of the phone First generation (Gen-1) IP Telephones support power over pins 7 & 8 or via the barrel connector on the bottom of the phone. Although the Gen-1 IP Telephones do not directly support IEEE Draft 802.3af standard power, the Gen-1 IP Phone Adapter (Figure 5) can be used to power a Gen-1 IP Phone via Avaya s IEEE Draft 802.3af standard compliant switches and power distribution units. Second generation (Gen-2) IP Telephones adhere to the current IEEE Draft 802.3af specifications accepting power on either the data pairs or the spare pairs. 3. Identifying a Gen-1 or Gen-2 IP Telephone There are two ways to identify the generation (Gen-1 or Gen-2) of the IP Telephone (applicable to 4606, 4612, and 4624 only): 3.1 Identification via the Label On the bottom of the IP Telephone, a product label printed with two bar codes identifies the IP Telephone as Gen-1 or Gen-2 via a 12-character (US) or 16-character (Int l) Model Number (Apparatus Code). This model number is located below the first bar code and to the right of the Comcode. Page: 2 of 25

The 01A or 02A in the Model Number (Apparatus Code) indicates either Gen-1 or Gen-2 respectively. For example, 4624D01A-003 is a Gen-1 IP Telephone and 4624D02A-003 is a Gen-2 IP Telephone. Gen-2 IP Telephones can also be identified by Comcodes starting with Identification via the Display To view the Model Number of the phone on the display, power the IP Telephone with a local power supply without a LAN connection. After the IP Telephone has started, a message is displayed No Ethernet, * to program. At this point, press the * key once and the # key until the message, No new values., #=OK is displayed. After a few seconds, the message, No Ethernet is displayed. Now, press the MUTE key (a Beep sound is heard) and then press the keypad buttons V I E W or one at a time (no need to hold any key and the Beep sound is not heard for each key press). A message is displayed, View Settings *=next #=exit. Press the * key once and a message for the Model of the IP Telephone is displayed. For example, Model=4624D01A for the 4624 IP Telephone. The last three characters 01A or 02A indicate the Gen-1 or Gen-2 of the IP Telephone. 4. Types of IP Telephone Power 4.1 Centralized Power With Power over Ethernet (IEEE Draft 802.3af standard), both power and data are carried over one CAT 5 Ethernet cable. Deploying the IP Telephones utilizing Power over Ethernet eliminates the need for a local power supply, AC adapter and cables, thereby allowing power to be provided from the wiring closet/switch room where it can be easily connected to a UPS system. The standards body, IEEE, governing Power over Ethernet (PoE) has not ratified a final position on PoE. However, a working draft of IEEE 802.3af has been in place to establish guidelines for this area since November The IEEE802.3af standardization process is now approaching completion. The key technical characteristics of the IEEE Draft 802.3af standard for Power over Ethernet (PoE) are cited in the bullets below: Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) Output Voltage: 44 Vdc to 57 Vdc Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) Output Current: 350 ma max Page: 3 of 25

Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) Power: 15.4 W max Powered Device (PD) maximum power draw allowed is W Powered Device (PD) will be ready to accept power from either set of pairs: o Spare Pairs (pins 4/5 and 7/8) o Signal / Data Pairs (pins 1/2 and 3/6) Signature detection method will be the Resistor concept Mid-Span shall supply power on Spare Pairs (pins 4/5 and 7/8) End-Span shall supply power on either Signal / Data Pairs (pins 1/2 and 3/6) or Spare Pairs (pins 4/5 and 7/8) The power detection and power feed shall operate on the same set of pairs Details concerning the IEEE Draft 802.3af standard (technically known as DTE Power via MDI Task Force ) can be obtained at Local Power This refers to power supplied at the phone s immediate location. Local Power requires a 120/240 VAC outlet within 6 feet of the phone. Power is provided to the IP Telephone via a power supply with either a CAT 5 LAN cable or a barrel connector or a special split cord. The local power supply unit can either be a switching power supply or a wall power supply. Each power supply has a different power range it can operate in. 5. Configuring the IP Telephones for Power The Avaya 4600 Series IP Telephones are comprised of the following models: Avaya 4602 IP Telephone (No Barrel or, 1 RJ45 Jack No Switch, No Hub) Avaya 4606 IP Telephone (Barrel or, 2 RJ45 Jacks Built-In Hub) Avaya 4612 IP Telephone (Barrel or, 2 RJ45 Jacks Built-In Hub) Avaya 4620 IP Telephone (No Barrel or, 2 RJ45 Jacks Built-In Switch) Avaya 4624 IP Telephone (Barrel or, 2 RJ45 Jacks Built-In Hub) Avaya 4630 IP Telephone / Screenphone (Barrel or, 2 RJ45 Jacks Built-In Hub) 5.1 Avaya Model 4630 The Avaya 4630 IP Telephone is popularly known as the IP Screenphone. At the present time, the IP Screenphone consumes more power than the IEEE limits and therefore requires local powering. Page: 4 of 25

The Avaya IP Screenphone must be powered locally via the barrel connector on the bottom of the phone using the power supply (Figure 8) provided with the unit. When using the 30A Switch 3 Port Switched Hub (Figure 6) with the IP Screenphone, a special split cord (Figure 9) is required. 5.2 Avaya Models 4602 and 4620 The Avaya 4602 and 4620 IP Telephones will accept power only through the phone s RJ45 Jack using either of the following: 1. Centralized power supply Avaya P333T-PWR Switch (Figure 1) Avaya 1152A1 Mid-Span Power Distribution Unit (Figure 2) 2. Local power supply 1151B1 Desktop Power Supply (Figure 3) 1151B2 Desktop Power Supply with Battery Backup (Figure 4) 5.3 Avaya Models , 4612, and 4624 Once the Avaya 4606, 4612, or 4624 IP Telephone has been identified as a Gen-1 or Gen-2 phone (as described in Section 3), the manner in which the phone can be powered (local power or centralized power) can be decided via the following 3 sections. NOTE: Legacy Power is the least preferred method for powering these phones Centralized Power For centralized power (Power over Ethernet), use either an Avaya P333T-PWR Switch (Figure 1) for new installations i.e. Green Field or an Avaya 1152A1 Mid-Span Power Distribution Unit (Figure 2) for legacy systems. The Avaya P333T-PWR Switch with Power over LAN capability can utilize either the data (pins 1/2 and 3/6) or spare (pins 4/5 and 7/8) pairs for power feeding. A Category 5 Ethernet cable from an Ethernet LAN Switch carrying DATA is connected to the data port of the Avaya 1152A1 Mid-Span Power Distribution Unit (PDU). Power is then injected from the data & power port over the spare pair (pins 4/5 and 7/8) on a Category 5 Ethernet cable that is connected to the IP Telephone. Page: 5 of 25

Please note that a Gen-1 IP Phone Adapter (Figure 5) is required for Gen-1 IP Telephones to receive power from either the Avaya P333T-PWR Switch or 1152A1 Mid-Span Power Distribution Unit (PDU) Local Power The 1151B1 (Figure 3) and 1151B2 (Figure 4) switching power supplies are the preferred global solution for local powering and replaces the 1151A1 and 1151A2 units, respectively. In addition to being the preferred solution, the 1151B1 and 1151B2 local power supply units eliminate the need for any special split cord/s Legacy Power Many existing IP Telephone installations within US and Canada utilized the IP Phone Aux power supply with barrel connector (Figure 13). This local power supply is also known as a Leader power supply or wall power supply. Power is supplied via the barrel connector to a jack on the bottom of the phone. The 1151A1 or 1151A2 power supply (commonly referred to as a brick transformer) is an alternative method of powering that requires special split cord/s. Many existing IP Telephone installations in International regions utilized the 1151A1 (Figure 10) or 1151A2 power supply (Figure 11) with a required special split cord (Figure 12). If a 30A Switch 3 Port Switched Hub (Figure 6) is used with the 1151A1 or 1151A2 local power supply, two special cords (Figure 7) are required (these cables are included with the 30A Switch). The 30A Switch is applicable to 4624 and 4612 models and due to the narrow footprint of the 4606, the 30A Switch is not supported on the 4606 model. The 1145B Bulk Power Supply (Figure 14) is an existing pre-standard (was developed before the IEEE Draft 802.3af specifications) solution providing centralized power over pins 7 & 8 utilizing a special cord (Figure 15) with over-current protection and alarm LEDs for each output. The 1145B utilizes a locking station cord (Figure 16) to guard against damage compared to signature detection method of IEEE Draft 802.3af specifications. INPUT POWER CORD: An Input Power Cord is required to power every power supply. One end is a standard IEC320-C13 connector and the other end is an inlet (plug) defined by attribute (see table below). This cord is a twometer IEC input power cord (10 Amp at 230 VAC, 15 Amp at 120 VAC) and is common to several products. The following attributes define the input power plug required for a region / country. Page: 6 of 25
