1 INFOBrief Dell PowerEdge 2850 The PowerEdge 2850 delivers a combination of performance, availability, and configuration flexibility that make it ideal for a variety of first and second tier server workloads. Key Points The PowerEdge 2850 is a general purpose 2U rack dense server designed to support a wide range of applications. Such applications include: database applications, edge of network and Internet infrastructure applications (web servers, firewall, workload balancing, domain controllers, Domain Name System (DNS) servers, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers), messaging and file/print applications. Additionally, it is an excellent platform for thin client/serverbased computing (e.g., Citrix ) and SAN compute node. The PowerEdge 2850 delivers an outstanding balance of expandability and rack density. With three open PCI X slots (or one PCI X slot and two PCI Express slots*), support for up to six internal hard drives or five internal hard drives plus an internal tape backup drive, and numerous embedded features, customers can deploy the PowerEdge 2850 server to support a wide range of workloads in a data center. The PowerEdge 2850 replaces the popular PowerEdge 2650 server and provides the latest industry developments. Technology enhancements include: the new Intel Xeon processor with the Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T), the new Intel E7520 chipset, 400MHz DDR2 memory, and PCI Express* slots. 2 Product Description The PowerEdge 2850 is a rack optimized server designed to deliver new levels of performance while maintaining the availability and expandability features that customers expect to find in a rack optimized, dual processor server. PowerEdge 2850 versus PowerEdge 1850 The key points of differentiation between the PowerEdge 1850 and the PowerEdge 2850 servers are: Form Factor The PowerEdge 1850 is offered in a 1U chassis, whereas the PowerEdge 2850 is offered in a 2U chassis Performance Many of the PowerEdge 2850 features are designed to provide improved system performance and to provide the headroom customers need to grow with the increasing demand for server resources. The ability to scale to six hard drives provides extra performance by allowing customers to stripe data across multiple drives. Expandability The PowerEdge 2850 supports one more PCI X slot, support for an internal tape backup device, and four more hard drives than the PowerEdge 1850, providing customers with more configuration flexibility. Serviceability The PowerEdge 2850 allows customers to service the system while in the rack; the PowerEdge 1850, a dense 1U server, must be removed from the rack for servicing. PowerEdge 2850 versus PowerEdge 6650 The key points of differentiation between the PowerEdge 2850 and the PowerEdge 6650 are: Price/Performance The PowerEdge 2850 offers a compelling level of performance at a lower price than the PowerEdge The price premium for the PowerEdge 6650 may put the system out of a customer s budget for a given project. For example, customers that are looking to deploy a large number of servers as a front end to a large application can choose the PowerEdge 2850 and configure the systems to share the demand for server resources across multiple servers. 3 Latest technology The PowerEdge 2850 is built around the Intel E7520 chipset, the latest Intel Xeon processors supporting 800MHz front side bus speeds, and the PCI Express I/O technology. The PowerEdge 6650 supports up to 4 of the older Intel Xeon (Gallatin) processors, ServerWorks Grand Champion HE chipset with 400MHz front side bus speeds, and PCI X I/O technology. Form Factor The PowerEdge 2850 is offered in a 2U chassis versus the PowerEdge 6650, which is offered in a 4U chassis, making the 2850 an ideal choice in an environment where space constraints are among the most important buying criteria and internal storage capacity is not ranked as highly as a need. Performance Scalability The PowerEdge 6650 supports greater levels of processing power with quad Intel Xeon processors, larger on die cache, greater levels of memory capacity (32GB vs 12GB) and more I/O bandwidth. All of these features enable customers to add components to increase system performance to meet increasing demands for the server s resources. Many applications, such as messaging or internet infrastructure applications, may not scale as well beyond two processors, making the PowerEdge 2850 a better choice for these environments. Expandability The PowerEdge 6650 supports 5 more PCI slots and more memory sites than the PowerEdge 2850, offering customers more configuration flexibility as well as room for future expansion. Configuration flexibility is important if a customer expects to scale up an existing server rather than adding more individual servers to meet growth needs. PCI Express I/O technology Formerly known as 3GIO, PCI Express is the open, standardsbased successor to PCI and its variants for server and clientsystem I/O interconnects. PCI Express uses high speed serial link technology similar to that found in Gigabit Ethernet, Serial ATA (SATA), and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). PCI Express reflects an industry trend to replace legacy shared parallel buses with high speed point to point serial buses. The write back cache is designed to allow for faster access to data than read through and write through cache. With capabilities such as server fault alerting, event logging and last screen capture, DRAC4/I assists the administrator in alerting and troubleshooting server problems and helping to speed recovery time. Remote access functions are based upon industry standards including HTTP, SSL, SNMP, and IPMI. In addition, Active Directory support helps simplify integration into customers overall management solution in a Microsoft environment. DRAC4/I is a daughter card controller that leaves both PCI slots free. Standard BMC (Base Management Controller) IPMI 1.5 compliant The embedded BMC monitors critical components and environmental conditions such as the fans, the temperature and voltage inside the system. It generates alerts and helps administrators to detect and remedy problems at local and remote locations. Compliancy with the IPMI 1.5 industry management standard provides additional functionality such as: remote access to the server via serial port or NIC with the ability to power on/off and power reset the system independent of the operating system or application status. Dell OpenManage IT Assistant (ITA) ITA is a standards based systems management application that monitors and manages Dell systems (desktops, notebooks, servers, storage and network switches). ITA provides for system discovery, remote configuration management, system health monitoring, inventory reporting, and a consolidated launch point to system specific Dell tools. ITA helps to improve IT efficiency by automating traditionally labor intensive tasks, minimizing the need to visit individual computer systems, and proactively alerting the IT manager to potential problems before they occur. ITA also benefits businesses that may not have a large, full time systems management staff to watch over their networks, as it provides easy to use health monitoring, asset reporting, and consolidated tool launch functions. Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) Dell OMSA is a highly secure tool for managing individual Dell servers from virtually anywhere at any time. OMSA has an extensive list of management capabilities that are designed to enhance IT manager productivity, alleviate security concerns and ease integration into existing management frameworks. Below are a few examples: With support for industry standard protocols including WBEM, CIM, and SNMP, OMSA helps simplify the integration of Dell PowerEdge servers into a customer management network. It provides a customized installation mechanism to better meet the customers needs. Customers can use the browser or CLI to facilitate updates to Dell software including BIOS, RAID, firmware and device drivers. By providing SSL encryption and OS based authentication, OMSA helps protect the server from unauthorized access to server resources, and helps simplify management of the user IDs and passwords. Powerful online diagnostics and asset reporting capabilities allow users to take more proactive control over the server. Dell Server Assistant (DSA) Common BIOS and Drivers DSA is designed to make OS installation quick and easy, and provide customers with one stop shopping for setting up a PowerEdge server, including providing the latest Dell drivers, RAID and NIC configurations, Dell diagnostics, and electronic documentation. The PowerEdge 2850 shares common BIOS and drivers with the PowerEdge 1850 and 2800, reducing the time needed to manage changes on the platforms. Serviceability Tool less Chassis LCD Panel and Active ID The tool less chassis allows quick access to internal system components, which helps to make it easy to service and maintain. The LCD panel provides a detailed display for monitoring system temperature, fans, voltage and critical components when the bezel is open or removed. The new bezel displays the Active ID backlit in blue when the server is functioning properly. If the system encounters certain types of failures or management thresholds have been met, an amber caution light will blink indicating a problem. 13 Feature Benefit LEDs will indicate where the problem has occurred (power supply, fan, etc.), and alerts will also be generated via the OMSA tool. This feature enables administrators to quickly identify a server with a problem in a rack full of servers. System Identification button on rear of chassis KVM ports on front of the chassis The system contains an LED on the back of the server that mimics the functionality of the LED on the bezel. Additionally, the LED functions as a system locator from a service perspective. Simply press a button on the front of the chassis or generate a command via OMSA and the LED will blink allowing system administrators to easily identify a system in a rack full of servers or other IT equipment. Once the system is identified, push a button and the light will stop blinking. The PowerEdge 2850 has dual USB 2.0 connectors (for keyboard and mouse) and video port on the front of the chassis for customers who use keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) carts in their data centers. Front accessible KVM ports provide two benefits: 1) enhanced serviceability because customers do not need access to the rear of the rack, and 2) simplified cable management by reducing the need for KVM cables on every system attached to switches (i.e., customers only have to plug into the system being accessed).
