1 INFOBrief Dell PowerEdge 750 Key Points The Dell PowerEdge 750 is designed to address the needs of small- and medium-sized organizations, cost-sensitive data center users, and service providers that must deploy multiple integrated servers in a minimum amount of space at the lowest possible cost. The PowerEdge 750 is a general-purpose (GP) rack-dense 1U (1.75- inch) server that offers excellent performance, expandability, and deployment flexibility and includes: support for the latest Intel Pentium 4 processors; up to two SATA or SCSI hard drives (including optional RAID support); up to 4GB of DDR400 SDRAM; dual embedded Gigabit Ethernet 1 NICs; tool-less access inside the chassis; and optional remote management support. The PowerEdge 750 is ideally suited for edge of network applications (low-end web hosting/caching), network infrastructure applications (domain controllers, DNS, DHCP), and single function applications (video streaming). Its feature set also makes it attractive for use as a rack mountable client/developmental server.

2 Product Description The PowerEdge 750 is a very affordable, single processor, general purpose 1U server targeted to address the needs of price-sensitive users of rack dense servers. 5 Application PowerEdge 750 PowerEdge 1750 Developmental Server Features and Benefits The features and benefits of the PowerEdge 750 are shown in Table 3. The Celeron processor option provides users a lower cost alternative for more deployment flexibility. Hyper-Threading can provide improved performance for multithreaded applications through better use of processor resources. In simplified terms, Hyper-Threading causes the OS to view one physical processor as two logical processors, which can help improve response time because multiple tasks can be run simultaneously in certain application environments. Dual channel memory architecture to speed access to system memory, vital for the overall performance of the platform. On systems where the FSB and system memory bandwidth are not equal (not the case with the PowerEdge 750 due to its dual channel memory architecture), certain memory-intensive applications may be forced to wait while the system negotiates the bandwidth bottlenecks, which can result in slower performance. SATA (Serial ATA) technology, latest serial storage interface designed to overcome the limitations of parallel ATA. Parallel ATA (IDE) is running at up to 133 MB/s whereas SATA currently runs at up to 1.5 gigabits per second (equivalent to a data rate of 150 MB/s) and is expected to reach 3.0 gigabits per second (300 MB/s)-- much closer to the I/O bandwidth of today s SCSI hard drives. A much thinner SATA cable (1/4 compared to 2 for PATA), the ability to support up to 1m in cable length, and smaller size connectors on the motherboard help improve the airflow inside the chassis. Provides fail-over support and helps maximize I/O throughput of embedded NICs. Embedded NICs are backward compatible to 10/100 speeds. DDR-400MHz SDRAM memory provides more bandwidth and lower latency than the DDR-266MHz SDRAM memory used in the predecessor PowerEdge 650 server. Up to 500GB (2 x 250GB) at 7,200 RPM of internal storage using SATA hard drives for users who want a more affordable cost solution; or up to 292GB (2 x 146GB) at 10,000 RPM or 146GB (2 x 73GB) at 15,000 RPM of internal SCSI drive capacity for users who want to maximize hard drive performance. The two I/O slots allow for expanded functionality of the system, by adding PCI cards, such as RAID controllers, remote management card, or additional NICs. The slots are on separate PCI buses for better performance. The 32-bit/33MHz PCI slot is on the legacy bus (NOTE: DRAC III/XT must be plugged into this slot). The system supports DRAC III/XT (optional), which provides remote and out of band management, including the ability to reboot/power cycle a system remotely. This can help reduce the cost of administration because administrators do not have to be physically standing in front of the server to service the system. This intuitive, browser-based application helps to make management of clients easy. DSA is designed to make OS installation quick and easy, and provide customers with one stop shopping for setting up a PowerEdge server, including providing the latest Dell drivers, RAID and NIC configurations, Dell diagnostics, and electronic documentation. The tool-less chassis allows easy access to internal system components, which helps make it easy to service and maintain. If the system if functioning properly, the system status LED will be blue. If the system encounters any type of failure, the system status LED will blink amber, indicating a problem. OpenManage provides detailed fault information via SNMP alerts. In a rack full of servers, this feature enables administrators to quickly identify the server with a problem. The system contains a system status LED on the front and back of the server, which functions as a system locator from a service perspective. Press a button on the front or back of the chassis or generate a command via OpenManage, and the LED will blink, allowing system administrators to easily identify a system in a rack full of 1U servers. Once the system is identified, push a button on the front or back of the system and the light will stop blinking. Front accessible KVM ports provide two benefits: 1) helps improve serviceability because users do not need access to the rear of the rack, and 2) helps simplify cable management by reducing the need for KVM cables on every system attached to switches (e.g., users only have to plug into the system being accessed). Improved performance (versus the PowerEdge 650) 1. The new Intel Pentium 4 ( Prescott ) processor provides double cache size (1MB L2 cache) and more data bandwidth (with 800MHz FSB) compared to previous generation Pentium 4 processors used in PowerEdge 650 server. The combination of larger cache and increased front side bus bandwidth is designed to process more and richer data (i.e., video files) in less time, thus helping boost overall system performance. 2. Next generation DDR memory technology and dual channel memory architecture are designed to help improve overall system performance. DDR-400MHz SDRAM memory provides more bandwidth and lower latency than the DDR-266MHz SDRAM memory used in the predecessor PowerEdge 650 server. 9 3. SATA technology - Today s PCs demand higher speeds, more robust data integrity and flexibility for innovative smaller designs. Physically and electrically, the current parallel bus has limitations that prevent it from providing higher speeds of data transfers. o Performance - SATA currently transfers up to 150 MB/s compared to Parallel ATA that provides up to 133 MB/s. o Reliability - SATA enables a thinner, more flexible cable that is designed to improve airflow and to facilitate development of better thermal design. o Scalability SATA is a point-to-point connection and allows multiple ports to be aggregated into a single controller that is typically located either on the motherboard or as an add-in RAID card. 4. Dual embedded Gigabit NICs provide high bandwidth network connectivity with support for I/O traffic load balancing and failover. 5. USB 2.0 technology.
