1 INFOBrief Dell PowerEdge 1850 PowerEdge 1850 Key Points The Dell PowerEdge 1850 is a general purpose 1U rack dense server designed to support a wide range of applications such as: high performance compute cluster (HPCC) environments, edge of network and Internet infrastructure applications (web servers, firewall, workload balancing, domain controllers, Domain Name System (DNS) servers, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers), messaging and file/print. Additionally, it is an excellent platform for thin client/server based computing (e.g., Citrix ) and SAN compute node. The PowerEdge 1850 replaces the popular PowerEdge 1750 server and provides the latest industry developments in processor, memory and local I/O technologies with the new Intel Xeon processor that includes the Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T), the new Intel 7520 chipset, 400MHz DDR2 memory and PCI Express1 slots. The PowerEdge 1850 delivers exceptional levels of performance, availability and manageability in a 1U form factor with the following features: dual Xeon 32 bit/64 bit computing capable processors, dual PCI X or PCI Express1 slots, hot plug optional redundant power, dual embedded Gigabit2 NICs, RAID on Motherboard (ROMB) option with battery backed cache, optional embedded remote management capability, up to two hot pluggable 1 inch SCSI hard drives, and up to 12GB of memory capacity (once single rank 2GB DIMM is available). 2 Product Description and Positioning The PowerEdge 1850 is a rack dense dual processor 32 bit/64 bit computing capable server that is designed to deliver outstanding performance, availability and manageability features in a space saving 1U form factor. PowerEdge 1850 compared to PowerEdge 750 The PowerEdge 750 is a single Intel Pentium 4 processor 1U form factor server, Dell s entry offering in the rack server product line. The PowerEdge 750 provides great value for small and medium business and corporate customers looking for an affordable server performance solution that can also save office or data center space. When deciding between the two 1U servers, customers need to consider that the PowerEdge 1850 offers several key performance, scalability, and availability features that differentiate it from the PowerEdge 750. Specifically, the PowerEdge 1850 will support dual Xeon processors, hot plug optional redundant power, hot plug hard drives, redundant cooling, more memory, an embedded RAID option, and higher performance PCI slots. These performance, scalability, and availability features position the PowerEdge 1850 as the server of choice for more processor and memory intensive applications. It is also a better solution than the PowerEdge 750 if customers require higher levels of availability but still need a 1U form factor server. The PowerEdge 1850 supports the latest, 64 bit computing capable Intel Xeon processors, the latest Intel 7520 chipset with dual channel memory architecture and native support for PCI Express 1, and outstanding memory scalability with up to 12GB of 400MHz DDR 2 SDRAM system memory. The optional ROMB features write back, write through and read ahead functions that help improve hard disk performance. Availability The PowerEdge 1850 offers customers a very robust design and a multitude of availability features that will help protect customer data and keep the system up and running. The PowerEdge 1850 supports hot plug hard drives, redundant cooling, standard hot plug and optional redundant power supplies, optional ROMB with 256MB of battery backed cache for enhanced data availability. Manageability The PowerEdge 1850 supports the optional integrated fourth generation Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC4/I), a high performing, feature rich remote server management solution compliant with the IPMI 1.5 industry management standard. DRAC4/I supports graphical and serial console redirection, and virtual media with the ability to perform operations such as upgrading system BIOS, firmware, device drivers and installing applications from a remote location as if the user were in front of the system. DRAC4/I provides secure socket layer (SSL) remote access to and control of the server independent of the operating system status using an easy to navigate GUI. The DRAC4/I also supports and leverages the widely deployed Microsoft Active Directory user authentication and authorization mechanism for better integration into and easier management of the existing customer environment. The new bezel displays the Active ID backlit in blue when the server is functioning properly. If the system encounters certain types of failures or management thresholds have been met, an amber caution light will blink indicating a problem. Once the bezel is removed, LEDs will indicate where the problem has occurred (power supply, fan, etc.), and alerts will also be generated via the OMSA tool. This feature enables administrators to quickly identify a server with a problem in a rack full of servers. The system contains an LED on the back of the server that mimics the functionality of the LED on the bezel. Additionally, the LED functions as a system locator from a service perspective. Simply press a button on the front of the chassis or generate a command via OMSA and the LED will blink allowing system administrators to easily identify a system in a rack full of servers or other IT equipment. Once the system is identified, push a button and the light will stop blinking. The PowerEdge 1850 has dual USB 2.0 connectors (for keyboard and mouse) and video port on the front of the chassis for customers who use keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) carts in their data centers. Front accessible KVM ports provide two benefits: 1) enhanced serviceability because customers do not need access to the rear of the rack, and 2) simplified cable management by reducing the need for KVM cables on every system attached to switches (i.e., customers only have to plug into the system being accessed).
