Key Points Highly Affordable General Purpose Server The Dell PowerEdge 700 is designed to address the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses, corporate remote office and retail POS environments requiring full server functionality at the lowest possible cost. Latest Technology The PowerEdge 700 is a general-purpose (GP) tower server that is designed to bring new levels of performance and expandability to a 1P server, and includes: support for the latest Pentium 4 processors; up to four SATA or SCSI hard drives (including optional RAID support); up to 4GB of DDR400 SDRAM; single embedded Gigabit 1 Ethernet NIC; dual-channel memory access; tool-less access inside the chassis; and optional remote management support. 2 Performance and Quality The PowerEdge 700 is ideally suited for specific line-of-business applications, file/print utilization, small database requirements, support, and shared internet access for a dedicated group of clients. It is also ideal for use in larger organizations as a workgroup application server, or in remote office installations. Retail environments will also be able to use this server to support point-ofsale devices. Low Implementation Cost The PowerEdge 700 is an affordable server designed to be easy to set up, run, troubleshoot, and expand. The PowerEdge 700 is the perfect platform for small businesses or workgroup applications that have little or no IT support, and also for companies with an IT organization who expect Dell OpenManage systems management support. The Dell PowerEdge 700 server offers outstanding price/performance with the right balance of server features and processing power in a highly expandable format. Easy Integration The PowerEdge 700 was designed to minimize impact to customer IT resources. It offers state-of-the-art technology with factory customization to address user needs while helping minimize cost of ownership by using proven technologies. The PowerEdge 700 is delivered with the Dell Server Assistant CD for easy installation, and the Dell OpenManage TM Suite for easy server management and integration to Dell s PowerEdge server line, at no extra charge. After Sale Support Dell anticipates that small businesses will use the PowerEdge 700 as the main resource for IT needs. As a result, these businesses will expect great after sales support from Dell. This includes ECC memory, which allows the system to tolerate a single-bit memory chip error on a DIMM and continue operating without interruption. Additionally, the server offers optional RAID 0,1,5 SATA or SCSI controller cards to take full advantage of high performing, reliable RAID configurations. The SCSI drives are also optionally hot-pluggable, providing uninterrupted usage in the case of a drive failure. 4 Background The PowerEdge 700 is a clear choice for users who have historically used desktops loaded with server software. The PowerEdge 700 takes advantage of technology developments that allow server technology to enter into lower price points and compete with desktop PCs. The result is a system that is specifically designed to run high performance server operating systems. For a variety of non-mission-critical applications, such as a file and print server and remote server locations, the PowerEdge 700 offers basic server functionality at a very low cost. For mission-critical applications, such as specific line-of-business and POS, the PowerEdge 700 has features such as optional hot-plug, optional RAID hard drives, hardware monitoring, remote manageability option, chassis intrusion detection, and optional external DAS that suit the needs of this demanding environment. Product Description The PowerEdge 700 is a very affordable, single processor, general-purpose tower server targeted to address the needs of price-sensitive users of 1P servers. While the PowerEdge 700 is in the lower-end price range of server systems, it offers many features found in higher-end servers: 1. The Celeron processor option provides users a lower cost alternative for more deployment flexibility. Hyper-Threading can provide improved performance for multithreaded applications through better use of processor resources. In simplified terms, Hyper-Threading causes the OS to view one physical processor as two logical processors, which can help improve response time because multiple tasks can be run simultaneously in certain application environments. Dual channel memory architecture to speed access to system memory, vital for the overall performance of the platform. SATA (Serial ATA) technology, new serial storage interface designed to overcome the limitations of parallel ATA. Parallel ATA (IDE) provides up to 133 MB/s, whereas SATA transfers at up to 1.5 gigabits per second (equivalent to a data rate of 150 MB/s) and is expected to reach 3.0 gigabits per second (300 MB/s)-- much closer to the I/O bandwidth of today s SCSI hard drives. A much thinner SATA cable (1/4 compared to 2 for PATA), the ability to support up to 1m in cable length and smaller size connectors on the motherboard help improve the airflow inside the chassis. A failed drive in a RAID array can be removed and a new drive installed without shutting down the system. The new drive automatically rebuilds into the array. Corrects single bit errors to help provide higher levels of system uptime. ECC support is a key differentiator between most desktop chipsets and server chipsets in single processor systems, and is a mandatory requirement in most server environments. DDR-400MHz SDRAM memory provides more bandwidth and lower latency than the DDR-266MHz SDRAM memory used in the predecessor server, the PowerEdge 600SC. Up to 1000GB (4 x 250GB) at 7,200 RPM of internal storage using SATA hard drives for users who want a more affordable cost solution; or up to 584GB (4 x 146GB) at 10,000 RPM or 72.8GB (4 x 18.2GB) at 15,000 RPM of internal SCSI drive capacity for users who want to maximize hard drive performance. The five I/O slots allow for expanded functionality of the system, by adding PCI cards, such as RAID controllers, remote management card, or additional NICs. The slots are on two separate PCI buses for maximum performance. The 32-bit/33MHz PCI slots are on the legacy bus (NOTE: Optional DRAC III/XT must be plugged into one of these slots). The system supports DRAC III/XT (optional), which provides remote and out of band management, including the ability to reboot/power cycle a system remotely. This can help reduce the cost of administration because administrators do not have to be physically standing in front of the server to service the system. Page 8 March 2004
