1 messana box submittal Job Designer Contact mbox is a powerful control unit specifically designed for hydronic radiant cooling and heating systems with different terminals: ceiling panels, radiant floors, hydronic fan coils as well as air handlers and third-party VRV systems. It is assembled with industrial grade components for commercial and residential high-end applications. The unit regulates the building s energy usage by activating energy sources (Heat pumps, chillers and boilers) and circulator pumps, modulating the radiant fluid flow through 3-way mixing valves and controlling the zone terminals with modules. It features an unique technology to efficiently control the Domestic Hot Water (DHW). mbox is based on a x86 architecture (Intel Atom E3800) with inus O (Debian). It acts as the logical main unit, web server, gateway and communication module. mbox fully integrates with the Messana web and mobile app (io and Android) providing a unique climate control platform (mcontrol) developed with more then 20 years of experience in radiant cooling and heating technology. There are two different types of I/O connectors: the standard I/Os rail-mounted terminal blocks with Push-in CAGE CAMP (with exception of the power relays DO5-DO8) and the additional programmable I/Os push-in connectors (indicated as additional ) located on the embedded Emerson controller that need to be wired directly on the controller. 3. If one of the dry contacts is powered, all four commons will be at the same voltage. 7. Pre-wired relay sockets for dry contacts. Require miniature power relays (not included) rated 25AC/6A (max 40AC/10A). Can be reconfigured as DC or 110/22AC wet contacts. 8. Pre-wired relays with 110/22AC wet contacts. HD (from the ZOE BU) terminal must be connected to the shield of the serial bus cable (for foil shielded cable, use the shield drain wire) to provide shielding against induced noise. The shield must be connected at one end only. Without the HD connection, reliability of the protocol can be significantly degraded. Always connect the shield drain wire to HD only on the mbox side. Do not connect the shield on any other Modbus device to GD (or HD). Make sure the continuity is maintained on each split connection on the BU by twisting together the shield drain wires of the two shielded cables. In typical installations the sensors are installed directly on the module. HD terminal must be connected to the shield of the serial bus cable (for foil shielded cable, use the shield drain wire) to provide shielding against induced noise. It can also be reprogrammed as 4-20mA. AO1 MIX and AO2 MIX are typically used to control motorized proportional mix valves to adjust the radiant fluid temperature. AO1 MIX AO2 MIX AO3 AUX AO4 AUX Y Y Y Y, are the terminals to supply power to the valve actuator. Y is the 2-1 (or 0-1) terminal to control the position of the valve. Y can be programmed as a 0-1 or 2-1 analog output. AO MIX default value is 2-1. BK RD WH OG Belimo actuator models RB24-R-T ARB24-R-T 0-1 Analog Messana suggests the use of the Belimo B3 series 3-Way mixing valves with 2-1 proportional control actuators: RB24-R-T (B307-B325 valves) and ARB24-R-T (B329-B352 valves). AO3 AUX and AO4 AUX are two general purpose analog outputs., Y are the 0-1 (or 2-1) signal terminals to control analog devices (servo motors, actuators, fan-coils, etc.). Y can be program as a 0-1 or 2-1 analog output. AO AUX default value is 0-1. ovember

6 Inputs / Outputs contacts AI TC (UPPY / RETUR) and AI TC AUX (AI3, AI4, AI5, AI6) Analog Inputs for temperature probes (TC 10kΩ@25 C Beta 3435). Can also be reprogrammed for pressure sensors, flow meters, feedback signals. AI TC (UPPY / RETUR) are dedicated to TC probes to measure supply and return temperatures of the radiant fluid. AI TC AI TC AUX UPPY RETUR AI3 AI4 AI5 AI6 UPPY terminals are used for supply fluid TC temperature probes. R RETUR terminals are used for return fluid TC temperature probes. The UPPY thermistors must be installed after the circulator pump. AI TC AUX (AI3, AI4, AI5 and AI6) are general purpose additional analog inputs preprogrammed as TC to measure other temperatures (buffer tanks, energy sources supply, DHW tank, etc.). R T T T AI terminals are used for TC temperature probes. Analog Inputs can be reprogrammed as PTC, 0-20mA, 4-20mA, 0-1, 0-1V or 0-5V or digital inputs. Do not use PT1000 temperature probes. Use only 3435 K 10 kohms TC thermistors. DI1 AUX Digital Inputs (DI) are opto-insulated dry contacts. DI are used to communicate the status of external devices to the mbox module. DI can be programmed to be triggered by normally open (O) or normally close (C) external contacts. By default a DI is preset to work with a O contact. In case of event, an external contact is closed and acknowledged by the DI. DI AUX DI1 is a dry contact digital input for external devices (alarm system, fire alarm, window sensor, presence sensor, etc.). It can also be used with an external switch to select the system mode between heating and cooling or to force the device O and OFF. DI1 mbox offers one digital input, DI1, pre-wired on the terminal blocks on the DI bar. Additional 10 Digital Inputs (DI2-DI11) are available directly on the embedded Emerson I/O controller and need to be wired directly on the push-in connectors located on the controller. The two poles (11-14/12 and 21-24/22) are electrically isolated but are activated at the same time by the digital outputs DO5 or DO6. DO7 (PWR) and DO8 (PWR) are pre-wired as high voltage (11AC or 22AC, depending on the mbox AC power) wet contacts to directly control circulator pumps or other high voltage devices. Use the 14 () and 24 () terminals as normally open contacts or 12 () and 22 () as normally closed contacts. being controlled P1 Pump P2 Pump 11/60Hz 11/60Hz Any high voltage device connected to DO7-DO8 (PWR) will be powered by the same mbox AC power supply and will be protected by the same fuse. The mbox is supplied with a 4A fuse. 1 Amp is absorbed by the mbox itself and the remaining 3 Amps are available for the power relays. If more then 3 Amps are required, the main fuse must be upgraded accordingly. Power relays are rated 25AC/6A (max 40AC/10A). AC power Power contacts DC power terminals (max 30W) To supply DC to other additional devices. //GD Fuse holder and disconnect switch This block allows for a safe connection to the power line (11/22AC 50/60Hz) and offers a fuse circuit protection. 24 VDC OV/ DC terminals. The maximum power available to additional DC devices powered by the mbox is 30W. This includes mixing/diverting valves, actuators, fan-coils, etc. GD Fuse holder switch (neutral), (line) and GD (ground/earth) are the terminals to connect a power cord (not included) to the mbox. The fuse holder and disconnect switch can also be used as a fused switch to shut off power to the device by safely extracting the fuse holder. DC device 110/22AC 50/60Hz The mbox is supplied with one 4A fuse and one spare fuse (in the fuse holder). 1 Amp is absorbed by the mbox itself and the remaining 3 Amps are available for the power relays DO6-DO7 (PWR). 9 mbox sample application drawing (electrical drawing) Below is a sample application drawing of a two-floor single home system. It is a combination of both radiant ceiling and radiant floor with 2 fan-coils in integration, one in the living room (Modbus #1) and one in the master bedroom (A 0-1). The system features 11 zones (with both radiant cooling and heating) controlled with one 12 dedicated to the 1st floor (6 zones, 3 to 8) and on 8 (4 zones, 15 to 21) for the 2nd floor. There is also one T/H sensor (#2) attached to an installed in the guest room and one (#1) installed in the mechanical room only for monitoring temperature and humidity (no zoning). A Heat Pump is the primary source to provide heating and cooling with a second stage chiller for cooling and a second stage gas fired boiler for heating. The boiler is also dedicated to the Domestic Hot Water system that features a recirculation system. Two Air Treatment Units (one per floor) with HRV are dedicated to control the air quality (IAQ) including the humidity.
