GENERAL This publication contains Installation, Start-Up, Controls, Operation, Troubleshooting and Service information for the EnergyX Energy Recovery system, factory installed on a 48/50PG or 48/50PM rooftop unit. This document is a preliminary supplemental installation instruction and is to be used in conjunction with the base rooftop unit Installation Instructions and Start-Up/Operation Instructions for ComfortLinkt units only. The EnergyX Energy Recovery system is designed to pre -condition the outside air prior to it entering the rooftop unit evaporator using building exhaust air as a heat sink / source. The EnergyX system provides latent and sensible energy exchange between the outside ventilation air and the building exhaust air. This preconditioning of air allows higher operating efficiencies, increased comfort control, potential downsizing of the base rooftop unit while still meeting the ASHRAE ventilation requirements. Operational cost savings are realized by the high efficiency Energy Recovery device meeting the cooling and heating call for a larger portion of the operating cycle than just a normal damper or economizer device. This is demonstrated by the EnergyX ARI Guideline -V Combined Efficiency Factor. The EnergyX is a factory integrated, single piece, fully tested and certified energy recovery system specifically designed for the Carrier Centurion rooftop product line. It uses a single power supply and a single curb. It is available for vertical supply and return duct configurations only. The EnergyX Energy Recovery Wheel is rated in accordance with ARI 1060 and is ETL certified. INSTALLATION An EnergyX unit is installed as a single piece unit. To install an EnergyX unit, perform the following: 1. Inspect Unit Shipment Inspect the EnergyX system for damage. (See Fig. 1.) File a claim with the shipping company if shipment is incomplete or damaged. Access to: control box Exhaust blower Exhaust motor Enthalpy wheel Fig. 1 - EnergyX Unit (Rooftop Unit Size Shown) C
3 2. Install Roofcurb The EnergyX unit uses a single piece roofcurb to support the rooftop unit and energy recovery section. Model sizes with a low CFM EnergyX use a standard roofcurb. See the unit nameplate for model number designation. All other models use a specialized extended curb to support the additional EnergyX section. (See Table 1.) Follow all base unit installation instructions. The ductwork must be attached to the curb. The flashing must be sealed to all ensure no water can leak behind it, particularly around the energy recovery section of the curb. NOTE: Refer to the base unit product data and installation instructions for unit dimensions and roof curb detail 3. Rig and Place Unit on Curb Follow all base unit installation instructions, except use the EnergyX specific curb and use the rigging guidance shown on the side of the EnergyX unit. 4. Install Outdoor Air Hoods - Install the EnergyX supply and exhaust air hoods using supplied components. Hoods are shipped under the RTU condenser coil. 5. Install Gas Piping Follow base unit rooftop unit installation instructions (Gas heat units only). 6. Make Electrical Connections a. Main power Follow all base unit installation instructions, using electrical values shown on RTU nameplate. The EnergyX module designation is contained in the RTU model number and only one main power supply is required. The RTU and EnergyX total unit is ETL listed as a single point power supply only. (1.) Units WITHOUT a factory installed disconnect or breaker Connect the main power wires from the field provided unit disconnect or breaker to the main power terminal block inside the RTU. See unit wiring diagram. (2.) Units WITH a factory installed disconnect or breaker Connect the main power wires to the factory installed unit mounted disconnect or breaker. Verify that operation of the unit disconnect or breaker secures power to both the RTU and the EnergyX module. See unit wiring diagram. IMPORTANT: Some electric heat modules require a dual-point electrical service connection independent from all other electrical circuits in the unit. Consult the unit installation instructions, unit wiring diagram and/or electric heater installation instructions for verification. b. Control power Follow all base unit installation instructions. The control wires between the RTU and EnergyX are factory provided. (See Fig. 2.) Only control and stat wires to the RTU terminal strip need be provided. The EnergyX unit can be used with space temperature sensors or a space thermostat such as a Carrier Thermidistat. All 24v control connections are made to the rooftop unit control terminals. NOTE: Use of a CO 2 sensor is not supported due to functionality of the EnergyX system. Typical CO 2 economizer Demand Control Ventilation logic does not apply for this device. Optional Devices The EnergyX options are factory installed. No additional installation is necessary for these options. Fig. 2 - Airflow Diagram C

If different settings are desired, adjust the setpoints to the desired setting via the ComfortLink control menu(s). The EnergyX unit is factory wired and factory tested. No additional wiring or connections are necessary. Adjust the operation setpoints from the default conditions as desired. (See Table 1.) To adjust the EnergyX supply and exhaust airflows, adjust the supply and exhaust fan speeds by using the following procedures. Units With an Economizer On an EnergyX unit, the economizer is an integral component of the energy recovery module. The economizer is not located inside the base rooftop unit. To access an EnergyX economizer, open the access door on the opposite side of the EnergyX from the control box. Initial Settings 1. Place the ComfortLink controls in TEST mode. 2. Turn the RTU indoor fan motor (IDF) on. Set Economizer damper position to 2 %. This will deactivate the EnergyX unit but not allow air to come through the economizer dampers. 3. Check that the rotation of the indoor fan is in the proper direction. If it is not, switch 2 legs of the incoming power wire and recheck. Once rotating in the proper direction, balance the RTU fan system and set to the proper airflow. Economizer Configuration 1. Configure the EnergyX settings as follows: S Economizer position to 2% S Turn on EnergyX Power Exhaust 1 (PE -1) S Turn on the rooftop unit IDF S Turn Off the EnergyX Power Exhaust 2 (PE -2) 2. Wait 45 second and verify that the EnergyX wheel, supply air fan and PE -1 are running. Verify that the economizer is in the closed position. Supply Blower Configuration 1. Close all access doors on the EnergyX and locate the four pressure ports on the outside of the EnergyX cabinet. Measure the static pressure across both the outside air and exhaust air sides of the wheel and use the differential pressures in Table 4 to determine the CFM flowing through the wheel. 2. Adjust the pulleys on the EnergyX supply blower to achieve the correct CFM value per the design requirements (except for a Low CFM 2-6 ton EnergyX unit with an ECM motor. For this unit, adjust the ECM control on per Table 3). In ComfortLink, go to the configuration menu and set PE -1 and PE -2 positions and input the damper positions from the step above. 3. Reset the economizer minimum position setting to 0%. The EnergyX setup is complete. Units Without an Economizer Initial Settings 1. Place the ComfortLink controls in test mode. 2. Turn on the RTU indoor fan (IDF) motor. 3. Unplug the RJ45 EnergyX LEN wire from the communications board (see RTU controls wiring diagram). 4. Check that the rotation of the indoor fan is in the proper direction. If it is not, switch 2 legs of the incoming power wire and recheck. Once rotating in the proper direction, balance the RTU fan system and set to the proper airflow. Configuration 1. Plug in the RJ45 EnergyX LEN wire plug into the communications board. Wait 30 seconds and verify that the EnergyX outside air fan, Power Exhaust-1, is operating and the EnergyX wheel is rotating. 2. Close all access doors on the EnergyX and locate the four pressure ports on the outside of the EnergyX cabinet. Measure the static pressure across both the outside air and exhaust air sides of the wheel and use the differential pressures in Table 4 to determine the CFM flowing through the wheel. 3. Adjust the pulleys on the EnergyX supply blower to achieve the correct CFM value per the design requirements. For low CFM 2-6 ton units with ECM motors follow table 3 to adjust the speed. The EnergyX setup is complete. Adjusting the Optional Devices Configure the EnergyX factory options per guidance below. Supply and Exhaust Air Frost Control Operation The optional frost control device senses a differential pressure build up across the wheel due to frost build -up. This sensor is adjustable from in -wg and is factory preset to 2 in -wg of differential pressure. It is recommend to leave the sensor in the factory setting to ensure the unit does not receive a false signal of this device. EnergyX Wheel Maintenance Indicator Operation To adjust the optional wheel maintenance indicator pressure switch, use a screwdriver and rotate the adjustment knob until the switch closes; then rotate in the same direction another two full turns. EnergyX Filter Maintenance Indicator Operation To adjust the optional filter maintenance indicator differential pressure switch setpoint, ensure the desired EnergyX fans are in operation. The unit filter(s) should be clean (new). Using a screwdriver, rotate the adjustment knob until the pressure switch closes. Rotate the adjustment knob in the same direction another 1/4 turn. EnergyX Wheel Maintenance and Blower Indicator Operation The optional factory installed wheel maintenance indicator uses a proxy sensor to monitor the EnergyX wheel. No adjustment is necessary. 6
7 TROUBLESHOOTING EnergyX Fans and Wheel Operation 1. Turn on the EnergyX fans and wheel. 2. Verify that the fans rotate in the proper direction. If they do not, switch the leads on the fan motors to provide the correct phase to the motors. 3. Verify that the wheel rotates in the proper direction. If it does not, switch the leads on the drive motor to provide the correct phase to the motor. Check Diagnostic LEDs Use the on board LEDs to assist in troubleshooting the EnergyX system. The EnergyX Control Board (EXCB) and the EnergyX UPC (EXUPC) each have LEDs that can help in the troubleshooting process. The EXCB has five green LEDs and one red LED. The red LED is for power indication and the green LEDs are status indicators. Refer to Table 5 for details. The EXUPC has seven LEDs. There are four communication LEDs and three status LEDs. The communication LEDs indicate if the translator is speaking to the devices on the network and should reflect communication traffic based on the baud rate set. The higher the baud rate, the LEDs would become more solid. Refer to Table 6 and 7 for more detail. Check Alarm Operation (if applicable) EnergyX has the ability to trip an alarm on the ComfortLinkt system through CCN communications. CCN points are referenced below. Dirty Filter Alarm If the optional Filter Maintenance Switch is installed on the EnergyX, the ComfortLink s Dirty Filter alarm will be forced by the EnergyX. The ComfortLink s Filter Status Switch configuration point will be set to normally open (FILSTCFG = 1). When the EnergyX s dirty filter alarm activates due to an increase in differential pressure across the filter, it will then force the ComfortLink s Filter Status Switch point to dirty (FILTSTAT = Dirty). This will cause the ComfortLink s Dirty Filter alarm (T408) to become active. Verify proper operation by partially blocking airflow through the EnergyX filters and confirming that the alarm does trip. There can be filter status switches on both the base unit and the EnergyX. If both switches are being used when the alarm is tripped, inspect both sets of filters because both will trip the same alarm. There is not an indication from the alarm to tell if it is the base unit or the EnergyX with dirty filters. Motor Status Alarm If the optional Motor Status Switch is installed on the EnergyX, the ComfortLink s Fan Status alarm will be used by the EnergyX. The ComfortLink fan status switch configuration will be set to normally open (FANSTCFG = 1). If there is not a base unit fan status switch but there is an EnergyX motor status switch, the ComfortLink s Shut Down on IDF Failure point will be set to No (FATALFAN = No). When the status of the base unit s fan and the EnergyX s fan are not the same or one does not match the Fan Status Switch (FAN_STAT = on or off) for more then 10 seconds, the ComfortLink s Fan Status Alarm (T409) will become active. The EnergyX system will force the Fan Status Switch (FAN_STAT) based on its input from its actual switch. There can be fan status switches on both the base unit and the EnergyX. If the base unit has a switch also and the alarm is generated, inspect both the base unit and the EnergyX. There is not an indication from the alarm to tell if it is the base unit or the EnergyX that has a fan problem. Check Economizer Operation (if applicable) Verify that the economizer minimum position is set to 0%. Using the test mode of ComfortLink, verify economizer operation by driving the economizer to its minimum and maximum positions. During free cooling the economizer will modulate to control the supply air to the desired temperature. NOTE: The economizer may take up to 2 minutes to drive from the fully open to fully closed position. SICE Refer to the base unit Controls, Start-Up, Operation, Service and Troubleshooting Instructions for information on general service of an EnergyX unit. 15 SEQUENCE OF OPERATION A Centurion rooftop unit with an EnergyX energy recovery unit operates the EnergyX module in an integrated manner with the base rooftop unit. The base rooftop unit functions per the base unit sequence of operation, while the EnergyX module operates per Table 10 or 11 as directed by the ComfortLinkt controls. In summary, the EnergyX unit operates similar to typical economizer logic, but provides pre-conditioning when the OA enthalpy is not satisfactory for free cooling. The EnergyX will always be in one of three modes (OFF, ON or FREE COOLING), depending upon the need for ventilation and pre -conditioning. Free Cooling (Economizer) Operation If equipped with an economizer (wheel bypass dampers), the EnergyX is capable of economizer operation. When the outdoor air enthalpy is suitable for free cooling and the unit is in the occupied mode, the RTU unit will modulate open the economizer (bypass dampers) to allow outdoor air to bypass the energy recovery cassette wheel. When in this free cooling mode (economizer mode), the wheel utilizes a stop -jog feature to periodically rotate the wheel and minimize potential dirt build -up and excess wear on one section of the wheel. Differential Enthalpy If the controls sense that the Outside Air and Return Air enthalpy are equal (differential enthalpy signal value less than 2mA), the unit will enter the free cooling mode and will utilize the stop -jog feature. This feature improves the unit efficiency by not operating the wheel when it is unnecessary to do so. NOTE: Differential enthalpy only applies if the has factory - installed enthalpy sensors. Supply and Exhaust Air Frost Control Operation When the factory installed frost protection option is used, the EnergyX module will sense pressure differential across the energy recovery cassette and will activate the frost control option when the differential pressure exceeds 2.0 in.wg. When a high pressure condition exists for a minimum of 3 seconds, the supply blower will be shut-off and remain off for 5 minutes. The exhaust blower and wheel will remain on, in order to remove any frost build -up on the wheel. EnergyX Wheel Maintenance and Blower Indicator Operation When the optional factory installed wheel maintenance indicator is used, a proxy sensor monitors the EnergyX wheel and sends a corresponding alarm signal when appropriate. Pressure switches are used to detect and activate the unit alarm when blowers are not running (all sizes except 2-6 ton low CFM unit). EnergyX Filter Maintenance Indicator Operation When the optional factory installed filter maintenance indicator is used, a factory -installed differential pressure switch measures pressure drop across the outside air filter and activates a field -supplied dry contact indicator when the pressure differential exceeds the adjustable switch setpoint (all sizes except 2-6 ton low CFM unit). EnergyX operation is not interrupted. NOTE: Use of a CO 2 sensor is not consistent with the design of a constant volume energy recovery unit. A typical CO 2 system used for Demand Control Ventilation allows the rooftop unit economizer to close below the normal minimum ventilation position unless a high CO 2 signal is received. The high CO 2 signal indicates the presence of a larger number of occupants and a need for higher volumes of ventilation air. This reduces operational cost by not allowing excess ventilation air unless required due to high occupancy load. In this situation, the economizer would then open to a position above the normal minimum ventilation position to bring in more outdoor air. In an EnergyX unit, however, the constant volume outdoor air ventilation setting should already be set at the higher volume of outdoor air to achieve the maximum benefit from the. It should not be set at the minimum ventilation position like an economizer is configured. Use of a CO 2 sensor to bypass the wheel would artificially reduce the pre-conditioning operation and increase the load on the unit compressors, thus reducing the efficiency of the entire unit. 15
