2 CarFlash was developed specifically to serve the needs of the automotive industry: CarFlash is a Multi-angle spectrophotometer with an integrated orange peel and surface temperature control. The non-contact device will work automatically with industrial robot systems. Due to increased quality demands of buyers and increased environmental requirements for paintwork and varnishing processes as well as the need to serve new types of color effects the technologies for quality insurances and process control have significantly gained importance. The use of variable chassis materials combined with decentralized production, and a continues trend towards to use painted add-on modules require an efficient way to ensure close color tolerances in production and assembly line.

3 Advantages for automated colorimetry processes Non Contact-color measurement readings can be taken on any desired surface: CarFlash can be used on plain as well as curved surfaces including mirror housings. Production reliability ensured with a multifunction measuring head: Online measurements in the paint line can be taken directly after the drying process, i.e. the earliest possible to measure color, surface temperature, and the long-wave surface structure. With the continues temperature control even thermo chromatic effects of the paint can be corrected based on the memorized data. Cost reduction due to automatic online measurements: The instant availability of measured data will enable a closed loop and correct the paint line settings. The rapid availability of multifunctional measurement results constitutes a significant contribution to: - lower energy and material consumption, - reduced quality costs, and - optimized process condition

4 Model and color mix measurements A sophisticated system of position sensors and powerful software ensures that the measuring head or probe is always aligned optimally to almost any desired surface. The integration of the hardware and software of the CarFlash operating system with the communication and interface module "SensorControl" as well as a multifunctional database makes it possible to collect and combine all relevant data concerning color, shine, orange peel, and layer thickness from various measuring systems and compare them with the required reference or nominal values. Practical use allows controlling products and product modules of rather different formats as well as surface and color mixes. Complex separating and sorting is no longer required.

6 How CarFlash works Approx. mm above the measurement position, the integrated ultrasonic sensor takes control of the industrial robot and moves the measuring system to the paint or varnish surface. Approx. 35mm above the surface the infrared positing devices takes the control and will achieve high precise, reproducible measuring results forms of any shape. Color is measured simultaneously across four angles (5, 25, 45, 75 ) while measuring the surface temperature and sequence value (long value) at the same time. The measuring system supplies highly repeatable data, which are compatible with the laboratory processes implemented in the automotive industry, and corresponds with the color measuring standards outlined in DIN 533 and DIN 675/2. The system is also highly compatible with existing, portable multiangle instruments such as X-Rite MA68 II. CarFlash functions completely automatic on any color. It is designed to measure non-moving, not vibrating objects. The system is designed for a dust-free environment within normal working condition at ambient temperatures of 5 C to 35 C. MA 68 II

7 Data processing The CarFlash measuring device will be operated on a CarFlash computer and controlled by specific software for sequence and color control. All software components, including general operating system, communication interface software SonsorControl, software for specific hardware expansions as well as the operating system for the measuring head and diagnostic tools are preinstalled on the CarFlash computer. 8 Intelligent software The CarFlash communication and interface software " SensorControl" moves the robot to the measuring position and links the sensor and measured data with product and production data provided by the process control system. These data can be retrieved via a standardized interface in a local network and processed into other desired data. 9 SensorControl enables free configurable communication of the measuring system CarFlash with different control computers, control systems, robot types, QS systems, and different communication media (hardware and software). The mature software standard for the external service is here preserved by the system supplier. A broad communication platform with universal formats for different communication media is offered right from the factory due to the modular character of the interface modules. The communication software can parameterized with ini files. Input variables such as header data (serial numbers, color hue, etc.) or connections between OPC server and program variables as well as ASCII output files are also flexibly configurable.

12 Programming the robot system With FAMOS robotic an offline program teaching and 3D simulation can be either done via PC directly at the robot line or in the office. With FAMOS robotic movements and measurements of the robot can be intuitively trained at the 3D object. 15 Interinstrument agreement Certificate for the multi-angle spectral photometer The spectral reflection values are measured on the 2 tiles of the BCRA II tile set #65 with the X-Rite ID #27. The measuring locations are located at the center of the tiles. The face of the tiles is aligned in the direction of the 5 input lens. The measurement of the underlying spectral reflection values of the white and black standard are based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
