1 Quick Tip! Trackside LED s help troubleshoot track power problems. If the LED is Green there is power to the track. If the LED is Red there is power available but it is not going to the track. If the LED is not lit there is no power available to the track o Check that the transformer is supplying power.! If the Red overload lamp on a Z4000 is lit, pull both power handles down to reset the overload safety, then try it again.! If the MRC transformer is controlling tracks 1 and 2 check that the orange power light is on. If it is and the voltage meters on the top of the transformer should read 8 to 12 volts. If the handle movement doesn t change the voltage indication check the circuit breaker below the handle.! The Z1000 s power the ledge loop. There is no LED for this track but the power light on the Z1000 controller should be on.. Check the circuit breakers on the MTH power brick that feed the Z1000. Reset the circuit breaker by pressing the white button. Remember the Z1000 s are powered on and off by X-10 hand held controllers. o Check the TIU s to see that their lights are on! If the TIU is not powered on check the circuit breaker on the power source. It will be either an MTH brick or one of the Z4000 s depending on the console switch selection. Quick Tip! T X-10 remotes: Use the hand held remotes to turn both the trains AND the accessories on and off. It is not necessary, or desirable, to unplug the Prairie Dogs, Bud s Welding, and the Light House. It defeats the automation and leaves our guests short changed if they are unplugged. Button(s) #1 turns on and off all accessories AND the trains on loops 1 and 2. Button(s) #2 turns on and off the safety over-ride for the trains. X10 on the P&P Layout Some operations on the layout are turned on and off remotely using a commercial product X-10. The things to be controlled are plugged into a control module, which is plugged into normal room power. The modules are commanded on and off by:

2 Hand held remotes o There are 4 remotes scattered around the layout.! They talk to all of our accessories as well as the trains Clock timer o There is one clock controller behind the transformer station. Number 1 controls the accessories, trains on loops 1 & 2, the bump and go trolley, and the double loop train that runs next to the glass partitions. o The number 2 controls the trains on loops 1 and 2. Quick Tip! Thomas(LEGO) The LEGO module gets a lot of use! We are wearing out LEGO engines at an alarming rate, so a Touch-Sense plate is installed behind the glass in the center of the Thomas viewing area. This Touch-Sense plate is different rom the others because there is no gap to install the normal Hand. The Touch-Sense plate is active only when X-10 #1 is on. The Thomas is now set to run for only one lap for each touch of the pad. The run is timed rather than position sensitive. Quick Tip! Switch Settings Switch settings for automatic running are critical for the unattended operation at the P&P layout. Here are the settings that should be checked before leaving the layout to automatic operation: Switch #1 Public/Member switch should be in Public Switch #2 MRC/Z4000 switch should be in the MRC position. o The MRC will provide power when the motion X-10 turns the transformer on with the speed handles set for the proper run speed. o The Z4000 will NOT start when turned on unless the speed handles are in the off position. Switch #3 Brick/Z4000 switch should be in the Brick position o The power source for the TIUs is selected here. Trains will not run in automatic without power to the TIUs. If the Z4000 is selected the Z4000 that controls tracks 1 and 2 must be on. o The Z4000 position would be used only when Switch 2 is also in the Z4000 position. Quick Tip! Automatic Loops What should I do?

3 The automatic loop trains need help! Is the Bridge down and latched? That may do it! 1. Use the power switch on the transformer to turn off the MRC and assure that the public can t start trains until you are ready. 2. Fix the problem 3. Turn the MRC power switch back on. a. An Orange light should appear on the MRC, the voltage read 8+ volts. The current meters only show readings when the trains are moving. 4. Adjust the MRC handles if the trains are going too slow to cross the bridge. a. LED s alongside Track 1 in both the east and west corners illuminate when track power is present. If the LED s are not lit, power is not getting to the track. It may be necessary to reset the circuit breaker(s) on the MRC. b. Too fast is a real bad thing. Fast trains may over-run the block and cause a rear-ender, or light cars will bounce over turnouts and derail or uncouple. (We have 1 black and 2 white remotes) (Clock is on the transformer table) Now the details! The automated portion of the P&P layout is controlled by products from X10. The MTH Z1000 transformer s power bricks are plugged into power strips that are turned on and off by X10 Appliance modules. All X10 products communicate by sending signals over the power wiring. Each device is given a House Code and a Unit Code and answers signals only to that preset code. At the P&P the house code is set to O so that we will only be controlling units with that house code. Unit numbers are possible from 1 to 16 inclusive. We are currently using only four: o O-1 controls the transformer and most action accessories.

4 o O-2 controls transformers and trackside accessories. o O-3 controls the power to the Lionel command stations o O-4 controls the thunder sounds in the mountain storm It really is pretty simple. The layout power goes on and off by the X-10s. Turning the X- 10s off when we leave provides safety and extends the life of our equipment. The clock is programmed to turn all of the X-10 modules off at approximately 10 P.M. and back on again at 9 A.M. If you can t get things working turn #2 on and then #1 on. You can repeat the turn on sequence presses if things don t respond. * The hand held controllers work best for manual operation. This is the clock, which now sits on the transformer table. The two rocker switches indicated in the photo will turn O-1 and O-2 on and off. An On or OFF command from this timer provides power control from either the rocker switches or the clocks program timer intervention. The P&P s O house code has been set using the dial in the upper right and should NOT be changed. Other switches on the unit should not have their position altered. The switch on the lower right selects whether the rocker switches are 1-4 or 5-8. It is set to 1-4 for our application and should not be changed.

5 A second device, the hand held remote is very useful. This is a photo of the current white model, but the functions are the same in black. (There is a n additional remote located at the lobby desk so that the Park employees can control our X-10 modules). The top two button pairs are the ON and OFF for the appliance units that are addressed #1 and #2. The remote must be set to the proper O house code (lower left) and that should not be changed. The photo shows it in the A position. Automated Controls Sometimes things get left on, or come on by themselves, overnight. That has causes excessive wear on both trains and accessories. Every 30 minutes the system issues turn off commands to the layout X-10 responders turning everything off. Well, there may be a few lights still on.
