Section 1.0 Overview The object of this document is to provide a standard for the installation of the TRAK SentryGOLD Fuel Management System (FMS). Installation of this system shall ONLY be performed by qualified service personnel. 1.1 Product Description The SentryGOLD System installation consists of three primary groups: The SentryGOLD Pedestal Dispenser Interface Communication Interface 1.2 Installation Overview The instructions contained in this manual are intended as guidelines. They will not describe all possible variations that may occur. If the person installing the SentryGOLD is not thoroughly knowledgeable in all aspects of this type installation, it is strongly recommended that assistance be requested from Trak Customer Support at (850) before proceeding. The installer will mount the SentryGOLD on, or near, fuel dispensers, connect power and control lines from the SentryGOLD mother board to the dispensers and mount and test the communication links. One SentryGOLD mother board will control up to 5 high power devices such as a pump motor, or 10 low power devices such as a dispenser solenoid valve or 30 fiber optically controlled hoses. 1.3 Site Criteria The Sentry will control virtually any dispenser on any island configuration. It may be placed in almost any environment. However, there are several environmental restrictions that must be followed for both safety and functionality: DO NOT locate the Sentry where the temperature is consistently above +130 F or below -40 F DO NOT locate the Sentry where it will put the user at risk from the local traffic. DO NOT locate the Sentry within 18 inches of a dispenser or within 10 feet of a natural gas dispenser. 3

1.4 Pre-Installation Instructions The SentryGOLD Fuel Management System will accommodate either single or dual hose dispensers. It may be installed to control either a remote or a selfcontained dispenser. Before installation, it must be determined that there is sufficient space in the dispenser junction box to install the required equipment. The SentryGOLD can control dispensers either with fiber optic controls or with direct hard wire connections. If Connecting with Fiber Optics: There must be sufficient space for the Pump Control Module to be installed without interfering with the operation of the dispenser or the access required for maintenance or service. A. Each dispenser junction box must have one available opening, which can be used to connect the PCM. B. Open the junction box. Determine if there is sufficient space to safely make the additional connections that will be required. If the box appears to be full, have an electrician trim the existing wiring to provide the necessary space. The volume of the junction box, in cubic inches, is usually stamped on the inside. You will need approximately 10 cubic inches. If not, you can measure the length, width and depth of the box to calculate the available space. Estimate the amount of available space currently taken up by the wires in the box. This will give you an approximate value for the remaining space. For example, if a junction box that is 30 cubic inches in size is one third full, there will be 20 cubic inches remaining. C. If the dispenser already has a pulser unit attached, it will have to be removed. ONLY TRAK APPROVED PULSERS AND PULSER POWER UNITS MAY BE USED AND ONLY CONNECTED TO THE VEEDERROOT MECHANICAL REGISTERS. Check to make sure that the pulser is compatible with the register and dispenser and that its wires can be safely routed to the bottom of the dispenser. The PCM can be used if, and only if all the above conditions are satisfied. If for any reason these criteria cannot be met, contact TRAK for alternate methods of installation. 4

If Connecting with Hard Wire: If controling the dispener with hard wire, conduit will need to be run from each dispenser to the Fuel Sentry housing. This may already exist. If not, it will have to be run. It can be run above ground on top of the fuel island as long as it does not present a trip hazard. The use of hard wire will also require separate conduit lines for power and pulser circuits. Section 2.0 Sentry Mounting The first part of the installation shall be the Fuel Sentry housing. As mentioned earlier, there are many different fuel island configurations. The following example should be used as a guideline and adapted to your specific needs. The Sentry can be supplied with a riser. It is designed to be mounted at the bottom of the Sentry housing and is made from a durable plastic but also allows any conduit to be easily run through it. It also is designed to allow the Sentry to be mounted higher when required. If the users will be standing on the same level as the Sentry, the riser should be used so the Sentry can be at optimum height. If the Sentry is mounted on a raised fuel island, the Sentry housing can be mounted directly to the island surface without the riser. 2.1 Location The Sentry, as shown below, is designed to be mounted within a few feet of the dispenser. As a minimum, it must be mounted no closer than 18 inches of any nozzle opening. Site conditions permitting; place the Sentry 2 to 3 feet from the dispenser. 5

SENTRY RISER FUEL ISLAND Conduit to dispenser The picture above shows the Sentry housing ready to be placed on the riser. It has a piece of conduit run from the housing out through the riser over to the dispenser. Multiple conduits are required in most installations and are not represented in this example. Bear in mind that the Sentry may also have several Fiber Optic (FO) cables running from the Sentry housing to the dispensers if fiber optic controls are utilized. In many cases, existing conduit may already be installed. The Sentry may be bolted down over the existing conduit. Remember that power must be delivered to the Sentry and control cables must run from the Sentry to the dispenser. Exactly how this is accomplished is not critical, but, must comply with all required codes. 2.2 Sentry Mounting Using the template located in the back of this manual, layout the proper bolt pattern for the Sentry. As shown below, the Sentry is attached to two mounting brackets that are, in turn, attached to the concrete fuel island via four anchor bolts. 6

Sentry Front 1. Locate the position of the Sentry. Remove the template from the back of this manual and place it on the ground. Carefully mark the centerline of each concrete anchor hole. 2. Remove the template and drill four holes as marked, with a 3/8 inch concrete bit. Drill each hole three inches deep. Remove excess dust from each hole. 3. Remove the left and right mounting brackets and place the brackets over the four holes, as shown. Insert the four Anchor Sleeves into the four holes. Place the Anchor Washers on the Anchor Bolts and screw them into the Anchor Sleeves. Tighten by hand (finger-tight only). 4. Place the Sentry down over the two mounting brackets and insert and tighten the four mounting screws. Remove the four mounting screws and carefully lift the Sentry straight up and off. Using a wrench, tighten the four anchor bolts. Be careful not to move the bracket s position. Now the Sentry may be replaced or removed, as necessary, by the four mounting screws. 5. The riser is mounted in the same manner. It is assembled on site but uses taller mounting brackets. The riser kit includes the taller mounting brackets. 7

Section 3.0 Mother Board Installation The mother board housing is installed in the rear of the Sentry housing via four ¼ -20 screws. The mother board housing is installed with the warning sticker at the top. The mother board housing cover is attached with 4 large thumbnuts. To remove, just unscrew the four thumbnuts and pull the cover off. When the cover is removed, the inside reveals two separate sections: 1. Low voltage on the left only low voltage wires or fiber optic cables can be placed in this side no signal wire over 24 volts is allowed. 2. High voltage on the right - only high voltage lines greater than 24 volts but less than 125VAC are allowed on this side. Fiber optics are also allowed on this side. WARNING: You must have training in the installation, service or maintenance of this equipment before working on it. Maintenance repairs must be done by authorized personnel only. Warranty work may only be performed by Trak certified technicians. Each section contains card edge connectors. Certain plug-in cards are available for each side. The cards, their function and placement are explained in Section 4. The low voltage sections contain a number of ten pin connectors whose function is explained in section 4.3. The high voltage section contains 4 ten pin in-line connectors whose function is explained in section 4.3. The very last card in the bottom right in the high voltage section contains a plug in transformer. This card cannot be removed from the field. It contains a 12 volt transformer that provides power to the plug in cards. Also on the right hand side is an ON/OFF switch. The proper label for the switch is located on a sticker on top of the switch. The OFF position is closest to the edge of the housing. 10 J32 J4 J5 ACH1 ACLO Section 4.0 Field Wiring 4.1 Overview The Sentry requires 115VAC for operating power. The Sentry can also control (turn on and off) the power (generally 115VAC) to a dispenser solenoid valve or dispenser pump motor. The Sentry also receives pulses in from the dispenser showing the number of gallons of product dispensed. All these controls power to the Sentry, pump on/off control and pulser inputs are wired into and through the Mother Board enclosure. The following sections describe how to connect power to the Mother Board (which routes that power to the Sentry Compact), how to wire the on/off controls to the dispenser and how to wire the pulser wires from the dispenser into the pulser circuits in the Mother Board. The Sentry is capable of either direct wire control (both pump on/off and pulser) or fiber optic control (both pump on/off and pulser). This manual, although describes fiber optics, deals primarily with hard wire connections. Please refer to the addendum that describes fiber optic hook up. 4.2 Connecting Power Power is required to operate the mother board assembly. It is designed for 115VAC only. It is connected to the power connector as shown below. Connect: 1. Connect AC power hot (115VAC) to ACH-IN 2. Connect AC neutral to ACLO-IN 3. Connect a green ground wire to GND T5B T5A K5B K5A T4A T4B K4B K4A T1B T1A ACHI2SW ACHIFSW ACLO AC2 12VACLO AC1 12VACHI ACSWLO ACSWHI GND ACLO-IN ACHI-IN ON/OFF White wire to Compact power Black wire to Compact power Ground AC Neutral AC Hot 9

The Mother Board also supplies power to the Compact. Those wires are connected to ACSWHI and ACSWLO as shown above. Those wires are the black and white wires that connect to the white Metro connector that is supplied with the Sentry Compact and connect to the matching black and white wire power connector on the back of the Compact. 4.3 Control Card Installation The low and high voltage sections contain multiple card edge connectors. The connectors are intended to have plug in cards inserted into them. Cards are either intended for the low voltage section OR the high voltage section. They are not interchangeable. Each card is keyed and will only fit into the appropriate section. Several slots are reserved for specific function cards. Slot J11 is reserved for the communication card. Slot J15 can be used for any low voltage card but when communicating to Trak tank level probes, the slot is reserved for the probe communication card. With the exceptions outlined above, any low voltage card can be used in any low voltage slot and any high voltage card can be used in any high voltage slot. In general some cards will physically fit or work better in some slots versus others but it is left up to the installer to make that decision. Cards currently available are: High Voltage 1. High voltage slot fiber optic transmit card (controls external Pump Control Modules) 2. High voltage slot fiber optic receive card (receives pulses from Pulser Power Unit) 3. High voltage slot direct wire pump control card Low Voltage 1. Low voltage slot fiber optic transmit card (controls external Pump Control Modules) 2. Low voltage slot fiber optic receive card (receives pulses from Pulser Power Unit) 3. Low voltage slot direct wire pulser input card 4. Low voltage slot communication card (several in this series depending on the communication selected hard wire, fiber optic, radio, etc.) (slot J11) 5. Low voltage slot tank probe communication card (slot J15) 10

Each card is explained below. 1. High voltage slot fiber optic transmit card. This card, shown below, is designed exclusively for the high voltage section. Since fiber optics is used to and from the card, the fiber optic cable can be placed in the high voltage section. This card can be used in any high voltage slot. The card has 6 fiber optic outputs. Each output can be used to drive a single Trak Pump Control Module (PCM). The maximum range for the cable is 100 feet. The fiber optic cable is inserted directly into the appropriate fiber optic cavity. Once inserted, the FO cable is held in with friction. No other clamp is necessary. For best results, the clear Teflon covering on the cable should be removed on the last ¼ of cable before it is inserted. 2. High voltage slot fiber optic receive card. This card is designed exclusively for the high voltage section. Since fiber optics is used to and from the card, the fiber optic cable can be placed in the high voltage section. This card can be used in any high voltage slot. The card has 6 fiber optic inputs. Each input can be used to receive pulses from a single pulser power unit (PPU). The maximum range for the cable is 100 feet. The card is shown here. The fiber optic cable is inserted directly into the appropriate fiber optic cavity. Once inserted the FO cable is held in with friction. No other 11

clamp is necessary. For best results, the clear Teflon covering on the cable should be removed on the last ¼ of cable before it is inserted. 3. High voltage slot direct wire pump control card. This card is designed to be utilized exclusively in the high voltage section. It is intended to directly control the solenoid valve, reset mechanism or internal suction pump of the dispenser. This card does not utilize the fiber optic control system. With this card, the dispenser control wiring is brought directly to the mother board and connected to the plug in connectors J32 or J34. This card is intended to control either two low power devices (solenoid, reset mechanism, or contactor) or one high power device (suction pump of the dispenser). These devices must all be rated 115VAC. The low power device must not exceed.5 amperes (1/2 amp). The high power device must not exceed 10 amps. The installer must be certain to follow these limitations or damage to the equipment will result. 4. High voltage slot direct wire pump control card controlling low power devices. The cards are wired into the mother board as follows for low power applications: Card Slot J1 1 st low power device to be controlled J32 - T1B and T1A 2 nd low power device to be controlled- J34- K1A and K1B A physical example of how this is wired is shown below. The same logic is used for wiring all other connections. The pump control card also has 2 jumpers on the back labeled JUMP. They consist of a piece of solid wire soldered across 2 terminals. These MUST be removed for the card to properly control 2 independent low power devices. They can be removed with a soldering iron or can be clipped with sharp pair of clippers. High voltage slot direct wire pump control card controlling high power devices. These cards can also be utilized to control a single higher power device per card. In general these devices would include a selfcontained pumping motor. This type motor cannot exceed a ¾ horsepower motor or damage will result to both the control card and the Mother Board. In the previous section, each pump control card could control 2 low power devices. In this section each card can control only 1 high power device. The jumpers on the back of the card labeled JUMP must be intact. If they are not, the only options are to use a card with intact jumpers or to solder a jumper from across the 2 solder points for each jumper using a short piece of solid 14 awg wire. 13

This is accomplished by wiring the primary control lines from the pump motor to two of the terminals (J34 KIB and KIA) as shown below. One also must run a jumper from the two terminals to J32 T1A and T1B as shown below. It is recommended that 16awg wire be used. These cards are wired as follows for high power applications: Slot J1 1 st high power connection J34 - K1B and K1A Jumper J32- T1A to J34 - K1A Jumper J32 T1B to J34 - K1B A physical example of how this is wired is shown below. The fiber optic cards are designed to be used either in a low voltage slot or a high voltage slot. They are not interchangeable they will only fit into the proper voltage slot. The hard wire pulser card is designed for the low voltage slots only. Each hard wire card has 6 pulser inputs on the back of the card as shown to the right. Pin 1 is the same for each input. These are 2 pin Molex connectors which are crimp on pins. For long term reliability, the pins should be soldered after crimping. Trak recommends 2 conductors shielded 26 awg wire with 600 VAC insulation. Two conductors are wired from each pulser input to the physical pulser that is attached at the dispenser. The pulser card is a multifunctional card. It is designed to work with many different pulsers. Many pulsers are either electronic or have an electronic output commonly called open collector. In the pulser configurations shown on page 11, the pulser card can be reconfigured to match whichever pulser configuration is required. The first schematic shows the card as it is shipped from the factory. The next two show both the pulser used to connect to an electronic powered pulser and a nonpowered mechanical pulser. In the PLS configuration, the card can supply low voltage DC power to an electronic pulser circuit. This typical circuit is shown on page 12. However, if additional voltage is required, a Pulser Power Card can be utilized (supplied by Trak) that will insert into any unused low voltage mother board slot. This circuit is shown on page 13. It is not the intent of this section to fully describe all possible pulser configurations but rather to serve as a general guideline to assist in connecting to different types. Trak is always willing to provide telephone assistance when necessary. 15

Once a decision has been made as to the configuration necessary, the card can be modified to meet the criteria. If it is necessary to remove the diode, they can be either unsoldered or clipped off with a pair of sharp cutters. The card is shipped with jumpers on the CTC/PLS headers. To change, simply pull the jumper off and replace in the proper spot. LOW P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 PLS CTC Diodes CTC PLS 16

Described below is a typical connection to an electronic pulser that requires a limited amount of power from the Trak Hard Wire Pulser Card. This configuration also is correct for using a non-powered (dry contact closure) pulser switch typical of Trak supplied pulsers. The two wires of the pulser simply connect to pins 1 & 2 of any pulser input connector on the hardwire pulser card. When viewing the card from the component side with the pins at the top, the right hand side pin is the common return pin. The diodes can be removed by desoldering or clipping. Sometimes a dispenser pulser circuit requires more than 5 volts to operate as shown above. In these cases Trak supplies a Pulser Power Card. This is simply a card that plugs into any low voltage slot on the mother board and supplies 12VDC out each of the 2 pin Molex connectors. It is configured as shown below. The resistor shown as to be determined has to be sized according to the dispenser pulser manufacturer and the actual placement in the circuit may vary depending on the manufacturer recommendations. 18

Cable Installation Slot J11 is reserved for all communication cards. There are multiple type communication cards available: Hard wire current loop Fiber Optic Radio 1 watt WiFi a/g Depending on the type card selected, various other connectors will be attached to connection points on the mother board in the middle of the low voltage section. As a minimum, the Compact has two connectors that must be attached to the mother board. The wires should be feed into the mother board housing through the rectangular hole in the left side. 19

The main external communication cable from the Compact Reader connector and labeled RS-232 on the wire itself is a red/black/brown cable combination that has a 3 pin Molex female on the end with a 3 pin Metro connector in the middle. It plugs into the 3 pin connector labeled SBC232 shown below. There are two 3 pin connectors right next to each other and either one is fine. They are also labeled J36 and J The main internal communication cable from the Compact Comm. connector labeled 485 on the wire itself is a green/white/blue cable combination that has a 4 pin Molex female on the end. It plugs into the 4 pin connector labeled MASTER ADR>15 shown below. There are two 4 pin connectors right next to each other and either one is fine. They are also labeled J22 and J24. J13 J12 LOW VOLTAGE SBC232 LOCAL-HW J11 J10 Card slot J11 is reserved for the communication cards. There are several items that require attention depending on the communication card inserted. 20

1. Hard Wire Current Loop - This card converts the serial data from the Compact into long distance capability referred to as current loop. This circuit is a 4 wire circuit (2 twisted pair) of 20 to 24 awg shielded wire. It is normally capable of transmitting data reliably to 2,000 feet. The wire at the Compact end is terminated into a 4 pin Molex plug. This plugs into the mating 4 pin connector labeled above as LOCAL-HW or J Both radio cards and the FO card utilize connectors on the cards themselves and no other connectors are attached to the mother board. The radio card utilizes either an internal connector connected directly to an internal antenna or is connected to an adapter cable that allows the antenna to be mounted externally on top of the Sentry housing. Section 5.0 Compact Installation 5.1 Overview Final installation is accomplished with the insertion of the Compact into the Sentry housing. Regardless of the options selected, all Compacts will fit into any housing. The Compact simply has to have several electrical connectors snapped into place and the housing has to be inserted into the housing and locked in place. 5.2 Electrical Connections The Compact has 3 connectors on the rear panel. They are: 1. Reader wiring to key reader (if part of system) and main external communication wiring cable 2. Power wiring to main power (115VAC) and wiring to speaker on speaker panel 3. Comm. wiring to main internal communication cable and wiring to the card reader (if part of the system) on the speaker panel These must be plugged into the back of the Compact. For the Reader & Power Connectors: Rotate collar counter clockwise to release, pull out of connector. When replacing the connector it is very important to line up the connectors properly. Line up the dots located on the base and collar of the connector. Excessive pressure is not required; if the connector is lined up properly it will pop in with minimal effort. Once a connector is plugged in, rotate the collar clockwise to lock it in place. 21

For the Comm. Connector: It is different from the Reader and Power. It does not have a collar. To plug in the connector simply line up the dots and push into mating connector. It should click and lock into place. 5.3 Inserting the Compact into the Housing The Compact is inserted into the housing by tilting the top of the Sentry Compact slightly towards the housing as shown. The groove in the top of the Compact will fit into the metal top of the housing. a. Make sure to tuck all wires into the Housing, be careful not to pinch any wires. b. Line the groove along the top of the Sentry Head with the top edge of the opening. c. Push the Sentry Head upwards as far as it will go. d. Push the bottom end toward the Housing. e. Make sure edges are flush and no wires are pinched between the Housing and the Sentry head. f. Slide Sentry Head downwards until it comes to rest on the bottom edge of the opening. g. Lock the Sentry Head in place with the Housing key. 22
