1 Presentation Zelio ime - timing relays DIN rail mounted relays Presentation A timing relay is a component which is designed to time events in industrial automation systems by closing or opening contacts before, during or after a set timing period. here are two main 'families' of timing relays: b "DIN rail mounted" relays (E7, E8, E9, E11, E XL ) designed for mounting on DIN rails in an enclosure, b "Panel mounted" relays type E 48A designed for mounting on the front of a panel to give users easy access to the settings. E11 E7, E8, E9 E XL hese relays have one, two or four outputs. Sometimes the second output can be either timed or instantaneous. If the power is switched off during the timing period, the relay reverts to its initial position. Panel mounted relays Application examples: b opening of automatic doors, b alarm, b lighting in toilets, b car park barriers... E48A Definitions he following definitions will assist in understanding the operation of these relays: b elay output: his is the most common type of output. When the relay is energised, the moving armature is attracted by the coil and so actuates the contacts, which change state. When the relay is de-energised, both the armature and the contacts revert to their initial position. his type of output allows complete isolation between the supply and the output. here are three types of output: v /O: changeover contact, i.e. when the relay is de-energised, the circuit between the common point and N/ is closed and when the relay is operating (coil energised), it closes the circuit between the common point and N/O. N NO v N/: a contact that is closed without being actuated is called a N Normally losed (N/) contact. v N/O: a contact that closes when actuated is called a Normally Open NO (N/O) contact. b Solid state output: hese outputs are entirely electronic and involve no moving parts; service life is therefore increased. b Breaking capacity: he current value that a contact is capable of breaking in specifi ed conditions. b Mechanical durability: he number of mechanical operating cycles of the contact or contacts. b Minimum switching capacity (or minimum breaking capacity): corresponds to the minimum required current which can fl ow through the contacts of a relay. b G (Gate) Input: Gate input allows timing in progress to be interrupted without resetting it. 2

After power-up, pulsing or maintaining control contact starts the timing. Function Ah: Flashing single cycle by operation of control contact After power-up, pulsing or maintaining control contact starts the timing. A single cycle then starts with 2 timing periods of equal duration (start with output in rest position). Output changes state at the end of the first timing period and reverts to its initial position at the end of the second timing period. ontrol contact must be reset in order to re-start the single fl ashing cycle. 6

If the interval between two control pulses is greater than the set timing period, timing elapses normally and the output opens at the end of the timing period. If the interval is not greater than the set timing period, the output remains closed until this condition is met. Function O: Delayed safe-guard An initial timing period begins on energisation. At the end of this timing period, the output closes. As soon as there is a control pulse, the output reverts to its initial state and remains in that state until the interval between two control pulses is less than the value of the set timing period. Otherwise, the output closes at the end of the timing period. t< Function P: Delayed fixed-length pulse he timing period starts on energisation. At the end of this period, the output closes for a fixed time P. P P = 500 ms Function Pt: Impulse counter (on-delay) On energisation, timing period starts (it can be interrupted by operating the Gate control contact G). At the end of this period, the output closes for a fixed time P. G t1 t2 P = t1 + t2 + P = 500 ms Function Qc: Star-delta timing iming for star delta starter with contact for switching to star connection. 50 ms Function Qe: Star-delta timing On energisation, the star contact closes instantly and timing starts.
