SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE SECTION 4 Maintenance This section covers how to care for Ink Cartridges, clear paper jams, replace Sheet Separators, and perform routine maintenance on Printer. Inkjet Cartridge Replace Printer Inkjet Cartridges when out of ink, when print quality is poor, or when purging and cleaning have not helped image quality. Approximate life of the HP 45 Inkjet cartridges, (based on three lines of 20 characters at 10-point size): 600 DPI 50,000 addresses 300 DPI 100,000 addresses 200 DPI 150,000 addresses 150 DPI 200,000 addresses NOTE: The above figures are based on printing an address containing three lines of 20 characters, at 10 point size, and 6 lines per inch. Individual results will vary greatly based on your application. Replace Inkjet Cartridge: 1. Open Latch Lever to remove used Cartridge from Cartridge Holder. Pull Cartridge up and out of Holder. 2. Remove new Inkjet Cartridge from packaging. Take care not to touch copper contacts, metal plate, or gold printhead. Remove protective tape from Printhead. 3. With Cartridge s Printhead pointing down, slide Cartridge into Holder. Push down and toward contacts in Holder. 4. Make sure Cartridge is seated in Holder. Close Latch Lever to secure Cartridge. DO NOT force Latch Lever into place. 5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for remaining Cartridges. CAUTION NEVER SHAKE, DROP, OR HIT CARTRIDGE AGAINST PALM OF YOUR HAND OR ANY OTHER HARD SURFACE. SHAKING PRINT CARTRIDGE DOES NOT MIX INK AND HITTING CARTRIDGE AGAINST A HARD SURFACE DOES NOT CLEAR NOZZLES. THESE ACTIONS HURT PRINT QUALITY BECAUSE THEY ALLOW BUBBLES TO FORM NEAR INK FIRING CHAMBERS. THESE BUBBLES PREVENT NOZZLES FROM FIRING, CAUSING WHITE STREAKS IN PRINT IMAGE. 18

SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Storage Short-term Cartridge Storage (Less than 8 hours or less than 2 hours in hot/dry environments.) The cartridge can be left in the Printer, for short periods of time. The next time that the Printer is used, the cartridge nozzles may have to be cleaned and purged Long-term Cartridge Storage (More than 8 hours or more than 2 hours in hot/dry environments.) Clean the cartridge and place the cartridges in a re-sealable container (i.e. Tupperware) with a damp sponge or towel to maintain humidity and prevent the cartridge from drying out. Note: Do not allow the nozzle plate to make contact with the sponge/towel, or the ink will be wicked from the cartridge. When the cartridges are ready to be used again, the cartridge body and contact area will need to be dried and the nozzles will need to be cleaned and purged. CAUTION! Be sure the contact area of the cartridge is dry, before installing it into the printer or damage to printer s electronics will result. Note: Decap Time (time it takes for unsealed cartridge nozzles to become clogged) will vary greatly. Ink type, environment, prior cartridge maintenance, and cartridge condition can affect Decap Time. Disposal Cartridges may be disposed of in a normal manner. In case of an ink spill, use soap and water to clean up any problem areas. Abrasive soap usually removes ink off of hands. Ink in Cartridge may be harmful if swallowed. Keep new and used Cartridges out of reach of children. Discard empty Cartridges immediately. Cleaning Printhead Maintain good print quality by keeping Printheads clean. During printing, ink spray, paper fibers, and dust build up on Printheads. This build-up eventually degrades print quality. If you notice problems with print quality, or to prevent a build-up from occurring, wipe Printhead with a wet fiberless cloth. Cloth should be: Soft Fiberless Moistened with water (Distilled is best) Cloth should not be: Abrasive Made of small fibers Dry or contain chemical additives Wipe slowly across long-axis with Printhead facing down (as shown). DO NOT apply excessive force, as this could scratch Nozzle area. 19

SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Purging Nozzles If Printhead sits inactive for a period of time, ink may dry in the Nozzles. Printing may not remove these ink plugs from the Nozzles. White streaks appear in printed text or graphic. To improve print quality, these ink plugs need to be forced out or purged. A Purge routine is built into Printer. It can be accessed from Printer Control Panel using MENU key. If this does not solve the problem, proceed as follows: 1. Wipe Printhead with a wet cloth as described in Cleaning Printhead above. 2. Perform Purge from Printer by pressing MENU, then + key. Load media and press ENTER to purge. Repeat if necessary. 3. Wipe Printhead again with a moist cloth. NOTE: For more information, see Section 5 Troubleshooting Guide, HP Inkjet Print Cartridges. Jams in Printer If a jam occurs, STOP the Printer. Up to 10 missed addresses can be recovered at using the Printer Control Panel. See Section 3 Operating Printer, Print Recovery After Jam for instructions. Some possible reasons for jamming are: 1. Feeding more than one piece of media. 2. Damaged media, such as dog-eared (turned down corners). 3. Media that is not stiff enough may not be usable. Media that meets Postal stiffness requirements for automated feeding is acceptable in Printer. 4. Envelopes caught under flap of another envelope or stuck to one another may cause jamming. Removing Jammed Media 1. It may be necessary to move one or more Printheads to gain access to jammed media. Take care in removing jammed media to prevent damage to Printheads. All pieces of jammed media must be removed from feed path. 2. Follow instructions, Print Recovery After Jam. Replacing Sheet Separators Sheet Separators ensure separation of pieces as they are fed. They wear and must be replaced periodically. If you experience double sheet feeding and cannot adjust Separators to prevent it, replace them. Replacing Sheet Separators is not difficult: 1. Turn OFF and unplug Printer. 2. Release Separator by loosening knob [A] and move Media Side Guides to maximum opened position. 3. Lower Separators so they touch Feed Roller. 4. Remove screw [B] and Separator Support [C]. Then remove Separator [D] by prying it out of Holder. 5. Install a new Separator and reinstall Separator Support and screw. 20

SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Cleaning the Printer WARNING! PRINTER IS A PRECISION MACHINE THAT SHOULD BE CLEANED REGULARLY TO INSURE MANY YEARS OF SERVICE. BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE DISCONNECT PRINTER FROM ITS POWER SOURCE! Printer must be cleaned regularly of accumulated paper dust and ink. Depending on types of media run, paper dust may accumulate within Printer and on Transport. Before cleaning Printer, unplug it from power receptacle and remove covers. Internal Areas: Should only be accessed by a qualified Service Person. Best cleaned using a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to help loosen dust particles. Take care not to damage PC Boards or electrical wiring. External Areas: May be cleaned with any non-abrasive standard household cleaner that does not contain plastic harming solvents. CAUTION NEVER SPRAY OR POUR CLEANERS DIRECTLY ON OR INTO PRINTER. EXCESS LIQUID COULD HARM ELECTRONIC PARTS. ALWAYS DAMPEN A RAG WITH THE CLEANER AND APPLY IT TO PARTS TO BE CLEANED. Feed Rollers, Feed Belt and Forwarding Rollers The Feed Rollers, Feed Belt and Forwarding Rollers can become glazed with paper lint and ink. Clean regularly with a damp cloth. Avoid using solvents or alcohol on Rubber Rollers and Belt. Cleaning Media Sensor CAUTION DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINED ON HOW TO PERFORM THIS PROCESS BY A QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSON. The Media Sensor is located within the Inkjet Cartridge Holder. It should be checked and cleaned periodically, by a trained operator or qualified service person. 1. Remove two screws attaching Holder to Side Frame [A] (one on each side of Holder). Tip: You may only need to loosen the screw at right side. 2. Carefully lift up and turn Holder over. DO NOT damage or strain Ribbon Cables or Media Sensor wiring. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment or dry compressed air to remove any dust or debris from the Sensor [B]. 21

Paper not passing under media sensor. Media sensor is dirty/damaged. Data out of print range. Missing/Clogged Inkjet Cartridges Clogged or dirty Printheads Running out of ink Double feeding Media is curled or bent Media is too thin or too thick This is Normal. Database problem Communication problem Static electricity Image is not sharp. Partially clogged/damaged nozzles. Line of type is being positioned across two printheads (cartridges). Media is slipping, hesitating or skewing as it is transported. All or part of image is printed with a ghost image (ghosting) or is skewing. Readjust media side guide positions. Clean media sensor. Adjust margin setting in layout software. Clean/Replace Inkjet Cartridges Purge or clean Cartridges. Replace Inkjet Cartridges. Adjust Sheet Separators on Feeder. Uncurl media. Media thickness: 0.008" min to max. The AS-150 printer only feeds at one speed (22 ips). Check data in database program. Check cable and connections. Turn Printer OFF and ON. Verify quality of image used in software program. Clean/replace Ink Cartridge. Reposition the text in the layout so that it does not print across two printheads. Check the sheet separator adjustment. If separators are set too tight they can hold back on media. If offset is identical on every piece and you must split print across two printheads, see Head Alignment feature. Check the sheet separator adjustment. If separators are set too tight they can hold back on media; causing media to hesitate, slip, or skew. 23
