5 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the ETC ColorSource ThruPower cabinet. ColorSource ThruPower is a 12- or 24-circuit cabinet that is passively cooled and designed for wall mounting in low-noise environments. This cabinet features high quality triac dimming with ThruPower (relay bypass) capability for powering moving lights and LED fixtures. ColorSource ThruPower continues ETC's tradition of providing the highest quality products for the entertainment and architectural lighting markets. Document conventions Use this manual during the installation of the ColorSource ThruPower. This manual includes instructions for installing the cabinets to operate with or without other system components. For user configuration and system operation instructions, please refer to the ColorSource ThruPower User Manual. This document uses the following conventions to draw your attention to important information. Note: Notes are helpful hints and information that is supplemental to the main text. 10 Chapter 1 Prepare for installation For proper operation of your ColorSource cabinet, ensure that the intended installation location conforms to the following environmental and electrical requirements. Installation environment Dry room, 5 95 % humidity, non-condensing 0 35 C ambient temperature Dust free Wall-mounting location must support 70 kg, minimum. Minimum 1 m clearance in front of the cabinet, to ensure adequate cooling flow to airflow vents. Electrical requirements VAC, 47-63Hz, 3-Phase + Neutral or 1-Phase + Neutral Connection to a suitable protective earth WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! High earth leakage current. This equipment must be connected to a suitable earth/ground before power is applied. WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! Failure to disconnect all power to the cabinet before working inside of the cabinet could result in serious injury or death. This equipment is intended to be serviced and installed by suitably qualified personnel only. Verify the contents of the shipping carton ColorSource cabinet with cover attached DMX Cable Preparation Kit with 8 pin connector (kit part number 4100A1012) ColorSource ThruPower User Manual Note: The packaging in which the cabinet is shipped is printed with a mounting template to assist in wall-mounting the cabinet. Unpack the cabinet carefully as to not damage this template. If you need to use this mounting template, do not discard the packaging prior to installation. Cable should be sized appropriately, based on type, installation method, and local electrical regulations. Knockouts are provided for the entry of steel wire armoured (SWA) cable. CAT 5 cable is also approved for DMX distribution when shielded or installed in grounded metal conduit. To use CAT 5 cable, you need to purchase a CAT 5 termination kit 4100A1013. Please contact your ETC equipment provider or ETC technical services for assistance. Contact input to trigger the emergency state. Prepare for installation 7

13 Chapter 2 Installation procedure Install mounting hardware Step 1: Affix the mounting template, printed on the inside of the shipping carton, to the wall to guide the placement of the mounting bolts or screws. If the mounting template is not available, use the measurements below. 12-circuit ColorSource ColorSource ThruPower wall mount cabinets may be mounted up to two high by any width. Allow clearances as described in Installation environment on page 6. Overall dimensions of the enclosure: 625 mm x 819 mm x 150 mm The middle row of mounting holes in a ThruPower Enhanced cabinet is covered by Nomex pads that protect the dimming chokes inside the cabinet. These pads have slits designed to allow the head of a mounting bolt to pass through. When mounting an Enhanced cabinet, do not remove, cut, or trim the Nomex pads described above. 14 24-circuit ColorSource ColorSource wall mount cabinets may be mounted up to two high by any width. Allow clearances as described in Installation environment on page 6. Overall dimensions of the enclosure: 620 mm x 1000 mm x 150 mm 410 Note: Step 2: Install the hardware required for mounting the ColorSource, using 2 of the top mounting keyholes, 2 of the middle mounting keyholes, and 2 of the bottom mounting keyholes on the full scale mounting template as a guide. Six M10 or M12 sleeve bolts and suitable wall plugs are suggested mounting hardware. Both the surface and the mounting hardware must support 70 kgs Expose at least 25 mm of threads for mounting the ColorSource. Access holes to tighten the mounting hardware are shown in Cable routing and conduit access on page ColorSource ThruPower Installation Manual

15 Mount the ColorSource ThruPower Step 1: Remove the twelve screws securing the front cover to the ColorSource. Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Remove the front cover to reveal the interior of the ColorSource. Mount the ColorSource to the mounting bolts previously installed. Tighten the mounting bolts securely. Check for a plumb installation and follow all local code restrictions. Rough-in conduit and cable ColorSource ThruPower includes removable plates located on top, bottom and both sides to accommodate conduit fittings for power supply and load wiring. Two knockouts are provided on the lower-left side, specifically for signal/control wiring. See Cable routing and conduit access on page 8. Step 1: Step 2: Install conduit, trunking, or armoured cable for AC Input and load wiring to the pack in the appropriate locations. ColorSource is available with either 12 or 24 dimmers. Make sure conduit is sized appropriately for the required wire. Install conduit as required for low voltage signal wiring. Note: Signal wiring must be routed separately from mains voltage wiring. Step 3: All signal terminations are conveniently located in the I/O compartment of the ColorSource Wall Mount cabinet. Two 20 mm knockouts are provided for signal wiring. Pull AC input and load wires through the conduit installed previously. a: Pull individual loads with earth (ground) and neutral connections. b: Pull power supply wiring for predetermined three-phase operation. 16 Note: Step 4: Pull all signal wiring as required for the installation through the conduit previously installed to the I/O compartment knockouts. Installation requirements for signal terminations may include the following: DMX In - required when the ColorSource is to be controlled by a DMX source. DMX Pass-thru - allows pass-thru of the DMX signal to other DMX devices. This connection used point is necessary only when using IDC connectors for DMX over CAT 5 cable. Emergency - receives a contact input which switches power for selected emergency loads to full and all non-emergency lighting loads off. Control configuration is required to enable emergency functionality. For user configuration instructions, please refer to the ColorSource ThruPower User Manual. Connect wiring Power supply connections Three-phase power supply connections Note: Supply cable gauge must be coordinated with upstream protective switchgear. Lugs will accommodate 50 mm 2 maximum stranded cable. P1 (brown) P2 (black) P3 (gray) N (blue) Only one neutral is required Earth (yellow/green) Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Run incoming feed wires to the bottom of the cabinet, in the location of the lugs. Remove the plastic cover from the lug board by undoing the #2 Phillips screws. Keep the screws and cover in a secure place. Strip15mm of insulation from the Phase 1 feed wire and insert it into the line side of the terminal. Using a 5 mm Allen key, tighten the terminal to 13.5 N-m. Repeat the preceding steps for the remaining phase, neutral, and earth connections. 12 ColorSource ThruPower Installation Manual

17 Note: Two neutral terminals are provided, but you only need to connect the neutral lead to one of these terminals, which are coupled together on the PCB. Load connections Load, neutral, and earth connections Step 1: Prepare load conductors by stripping 10 mm of insulation from the end of each wire. You can use the 10 mm guides in the cabinet to ensure that you strip the correct length of insulation. The 10mm guides on the cabinet are shown at actual size. Step 2: Terminate load conductors to the load terminals: a: Loosen the terminal using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, and then insert the wire between the upper and lower plates. b: Tighten the terminal screw and then verify that the wire is secure. c: Repeat the preceding steps for the remaining neutral and earth connections. Step 3: Note: Repeat for the remaining loads. Take special care not to crimp the wire insulation. 10 mm Guides Phasing Outputs are phased in groups of four. For example, outputs 1-4 are on phase 1, 5-8 on phase 2, and 9-12 are on phase 3. In the 24-circuit units, this pattern is repeated. Connect wiring 13

Each connection uses a pluggable screw terminal which can be removed for easy wiring. Emergency connections The Emergency feature is a contact input to the product which enables a third-party device to trigger a selected group of loads to full while turning other loads off and disabling other control inputs. A two-position removable header, labeled J12, is provided on the control PCB for the termination of the emergency control input. Connect emergency Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Strip 6 mm of insulation from the ends of the two 0.5 mm 2 to 1.5 mm 2 wires. Remove the 2-position pluggable connector labeled J12 on the I/O PCB. Connect the two wires to the pins. Tighten the screw firmly onto each wire. 14 ColorSource ThruPower Installation Manual

19 DMX connections Two 8-position receptacles are provided on the I/O termination board, one for DMX IN and the other for DMX-Thru. Prior to connecting DMX, follow the instructions for Belden 9729 cable preparation as defined on the single-sheet instructions packaged with the 8-position pluggable screw connector. If using DMX over Cat5 cable, a Cat5 prep kit can be ordered from ETC (part# 4100A1013.) Contact ETC for assistance. Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: For DMX In and DMX Pass-thru, using Belden 9729 cable as recommended, prepare the cable as described in the instructions provided with the DMX Cable Preparation Kit. Using the 8 position pluggable screw connector provided in the cable preparation kit, connect Shield (COM), DMX- and DMX+ as indicated in the graphic on the previous page. Repeat the same steps for DMX Thru. The I/O board includes a termination switch for DMX. If the cabinet is the last, or only DMX device on the data run, set the switch to ON. If the cabinet is not the last DMX device on the data run, set the switch to OFF. Connect wiring 15

20 Final installation and power-up Verify installation Is the ColorSource cabinet securely mounted with all mounting bolts properly tightened? Is there sufficient clearance of 1m in front of the cabinet? Check wiring: Are all power supply and load cables landed and properly terminated? Are all unused cable access openings covered with plugs and all removable plates reinstalled? Do all control cables meet specifications? Are all data terminations in the I/O compartment terminated? Remove all metal shavings and debris from the cabinet. The ColorSource Wall Mount cabinet ships with a debris shield to protect the electronics during installation. Remove this shield only after installation is complete, but before energizing the cabinet. If debris falls into the electronics, remove the debris before applying power. Final installation and power-up Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Check that all load, feed, and data cables are securely connected. Attach the ground wire with the spade connector to the front cover and then secure the front cover to the cabinet. Apply power to the cabinet. WARNING: When working on exposed load circuit wiring, the load cables must be unplugged or the cabinet disconnected from the power supply. Test loads via the menu The Test menu is a tool for testing dimmers and loads. In the absence of a DMX control source, the test menu may also be used to set dimmer levels to snapshot a preset. Initial power-up display The first time you apply power to the ColorSource cabinet, you are asked to choose a language for the operating system. Choose Language English Français Deutsch Espanol The Language menu allows you to select from multiple language options: Step 1: Press the [Enter] ( ) button. 21 Step 3: Press the [Enter] ( ) button. Enter the Test menu Step 1: Press the [Test] button. Test Dimmer 1 thru 24 Level 100% Set Release All Set dimmer levels in the Test menu For testing, you can set all dimmers to the same level, or set dimmers individually or in groups to different levels. To set all dimmers to the same level: Step 1: In the "Dimmer" menu option, all dimmers are selected by default, either "1 thru 12" or "1 thru 24", depending on the ColorSource model. Step 2: In the "Level" menu uption, "100%" is set by default. To change the level, press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button. When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button. Step 3: In the "Set" menu option, press the [Enter] ( ) button. This activates the dimmers you chose, at the level you selected. This can be verified on the Home screen, by pressing the [Home] (<<) button. To select a range of dimmers, press the [Enter] ( ) button and then press the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button to set the first dimmer. Press the [Enter] ( ) button again and then set the last dimmer in the range, using the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button. When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button Step 2: In the "Level" menu uption, "100%" is set by default. To change the level, press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button. When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button. Step 3: In the "Set" menu option, press the [Enter] ( ) button. Step 4: Repeat steps 1 through 3 to set the remaining groups of dimmers. Final installation and power-up 17

22 Step 5: This activates the groups dimmers you chose, at the levels you selected. This can be verified on the Home screen, by pressing the [Home] (<<) button. ColorSource Dimmer System OK DMX Start = 1 L1: OK L2: OK L3: OK V To set individual dimmers to different levels: In the "Dimmer" menu option, all dimmers are selected by default, either "1 thru 12" or "1 thru 24", depending on the ColorSource model. To select an individual dimmer, set the first and last dimmers to the same number. Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Highlight the "Dimmer" menu option. Press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button to select the dimmer. Press the [Enter] ( ) button again to set the end of range, and press the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button to select the same number. For example, setting both start and end of range numbers to "1" selects dimmer #1, individually. When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button In the "Level" menu option, "100%" is set by default. To change the level, press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button. When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button. In the "Set" menu option, press the [Enter] ( ) button. Repeat steps through 3 to set the remaining dimmers. This activates the dimmers at the levels you selected. 23 Exit the test Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: In the "Dimmer" menu option, press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button to set the start of range to "1". Press the [Enter] ( ) button and then the [Increase] (+) or [Decrease] ( ) button to set the end of range to the total number of dimmers, either "12" or "24". When finished, press the [Enter] ( ) button. Highlight the "Release All" menu option and then press the [Enter] ( ) button. This turns off all the dimmers, ending the test. This can be verified on the Home screen, by pressing the [Home] (<<) button. ColorSource Dimmer Verify DMX operation Test each load with DMX using a control console or DMX test device.
