1 Microphone Mux Module Installation Instructions Cautions and Warnings READ AND SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS- Follow the instructions in this installation manual. These instructions must be followed to avoid damage to this product and associated equipment. Product operation and reliability depend upon proper installation. DO NOT INSTALL ANY SIMPLEX PRODUCT THAT APPEARS DAMAGED- Upon unpacking your Simplex product, inspect the contents of the carton for shipping damage. If damage is apparent, immediately file a claim with the carrier and notify an authorized Simplex product supplier. ELECTRICAL HAZARD - Disconnect electrical field power when making any internal adjustments or repairs. All repairs should be performed by a representative or authorized agent of your local Simplex product supplier. STATIC HAZARD - Static electricity can damage components. Handle as follows: Ground yourself before opening or installing components. Prior to installation, keep components wrapped in anti-static material at all times. FCC RULES AND REGULATIONS PART 15 - This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. SYSTEM REACCEPTANCE TEST AFTER SOFTWARE CHANGES - To ensure proper system operation, this product must be tested in accordance with NFPA 72 after any programming operation or change in site-specific software. Reacceptance testing is required after any change, addition or deletion of system components, or after any modification, repair or adjustment to system hardware or wiring. 2 Overview The Microphone Mux Module (MMM) is an optional card that allows up to eight remote microphones to be multiplexed into a single microphone input connection. Compatible devices include the 4100U/4100ES Analog Audio Controller, the 4100U/4100ES Digital Audio Controller and the Audio Input Card. The card s status is monitored by an on-board IDNet TM Supervised IAM circuit. Note: There is no software associated with the MMM. Figure 1. Microphone Mux Module Card 2

3 Specifications The MMM is powered by 24VDC supplied by the Power Distribution Interface (PDI), and uses the power for microphone supervision and earth fault detection. Power is supplied to MMM s Individual Addressable Module (IAM) by the IDNet line and not by the PDI. Installing the MMM onto the PDI The MMM is designed to be mounted onto a single PDI block located in the panel expansion bay. It must be installed in the same remote cabinet or same local close nippled cabinet as the audio controller or the audio input card it is connected to. Figure 2. Installing the MMM 3

4 MMM Field Wiring Audio Controller and Audio Input Card connections: A) Audio controller* connection: One MMM can be directly connected to the audio controller s remote microphone input (the connection is wired on site). The MUX D MIC terminal on the MMM s Terminal Block 1(TB1) connects to the REMOTE MIC input on the digital audio controller s TB2 or on the analog audio controller s TB1. Connect the shield wiring of the connecting wire to the shield terminal of the audio controller. It is not necessary to connect the shield to the MMM. B) Audio input card** connections: Each audio input card can support up to two MMMs. The MMM connects to either INPUT 3 or INPUT 4 on the audio input card s TB1. The inputs on the audio input card must be configured for a microphone. Connect the shield wiring of the connecting wire to the negative PTT signal (BLK) of the audio input card. It is not necessary to connect the shield to the MMM. For the audio controller installation instructions and specifications consult document no Audio input cards are optional cards that connect to the audio controller. A maximum of two audio input cards can be connected to one audio controller. Consult document no for more information. Figure 3. 5 Microphone Mux Module MMM Field Wiring (Continued) Remote Microphone Interconnections: Each multiplexed microphone must have the same wiring requirements: 4000 feet (1220 m) of 18AWG (0.82 mm 2 ) twisted shield pair wire (the same as the original remote microphones). All microphones on the same MMM must be identical, they must either all be standard microphones or all be noise cancelling microphones. It is important to minimize the length of the wiring connecting the MMM to the remote microphone.this wiring should be done with 18AWG twisted and shielded wire. The audio controller or audio input card must be appropriately configured for the type of microphone connected to the MMM. Note: 1) 10K, ½ W resistors should be attached to the terminals of all unused contacts on the MMM s TB1. They should be placed between the White-Green terminals and the Red-Black terminals. 2) Each remote microphone has four wires color coded as white, green, red, and black. White and green wires are for the microphone signal, red and black wires are for the push-to-talk (PTT) signal. The shields wires are joined together at the MMM and tied to one same wire that then connects to the audio controller shield input. The wire that connects the shields should be jacketed to avoid causing an earth fault. European Remote Wiring: If installed in Europe, remote MIC shield wires must be tied to the earth ground (MTG1) in order to meet the standards for CE compliance specified in EN See figure 4.B. Remote MIC wiring must also use ferrite beads (Tyco P/N ). Each remote MIC s four wires must be looped once through a ferrite bead as shown in figure 4.C. The shield must not pass through the bead. 6 MMM Field Wiring (Continued) The following microphones are compatible with the MMM: Any other microphone that is compatible with either the audio controller card or the audio input card. Supervised IAM connection A supervised IAM* circuit is built onto the MMM. The supervised IAM is: Connected to IDNet communications through the IDNet+ and IDNet- terminals on the MMM s TB1. Used to report all troubles detected on the MMM trouble through IDNet. Programmed into the 4100U/4100ES job as a Trouble Point and should be given a custom label (MMM) to identify it as an MMM trouble. Figure 5. Supervised IAM Connection and SW1 DIP Switch The supervised IAM s IDNet address is set through the SW1, an eight position dip switch on the MMM. The supervised IAM s address is set according to the supervised IAM address chart, shown in figure 6. Figure 6. 7 Trouble Reporting The MMM reports troubles in two ways: Through a relay contact connected to the IAM built on the printed circuit assembly. Through the remote MIC line of the audio controller or audio input card. Microphones that have a trouble are not allowed to route. When a microphone without a trouble is keyed while there is a trouble on another microphone, the trouble generated on the audio controller or audio input card is temporarily disabled to allow the microphone without a trouble to route.the trouble is suppressed until the microphone is un-routed. The supervised IAM trouble will always be engaged when there is a trouble. Troubleshooting Audio Controller or Audio Input Card Microphone showing Abnormal: A) With no trouble light-emitting diodes (LEDs) activated on the MMM: The MMM is not wired properly to the audio controller The MMM is not properly seated in the PDI. B) With trouble LEDs activated on the MMM (LEDs can be used to determine which MIC circuit is faulty): A real trouble exists on a wired microphone; open, short, crossed wires or faulty microphone. The end of line resistors (10K, 1/2 W) are not installed properly or are shorted to each other on unused microphone connections. There is a faulty microphone on the circuit. The wiring distance is too great or the wire gauge is insufficient. Microphone is too quiet or too loud The wiring distance is too great or the wire gauge is insufficient. Noise canceling microphones are being used and the MMM is not properly configured for them. Normal microphones are being used but the audio controller or audio input card is configured for noise canceling microphones. The audio input card is configured for line level input and not for microphone input. Supervised IAM not present or not reporting troubles The IAM wiring is backwards or missing. The IAM address is wrong. A duplicate IAM is present in the system, meaning another device is using the same address as the MMM s IAM. 7

8 LED Functions There are 27 local diagnostic LEDs on the MMM. LED 3 is the IAM LED and will flash once approximately every 3 seconds to indicate communication with the FACP. LEDs 1, 2 and 4 to 27 are trouble indicators. A trouble condition is indicated by an LED that is steadily activated.
