3 Introduction Proton PSU-RS2 is a compact unit which provide adapter function between connection between Proton products and other device. It provides 24VDC power to gauge head via CANBUS; but as default configuration, it will not provide power to DeviceNet network. PSU-RS2 itself can be powered via universal AC power or +24VDC power. The connection to Proton products side is CAN BUS. The connections to user side are as below: USB RS232 RS485 (reserved) DeviceNet (Optional) Industrial IP (Optional) 4

7 RS232 Connection Ethernet Connection The Ethernet connection on this unit is DTE, not DCE. So when connect to a PC Ethernet card directly, crossover cable should be used; when connect to network via DCE device, straight forward cable should be used. 9 Installation - Software USB Driver System Requirements IBM PC 486DX4-100 MHz CPU or higher or compatible system Available USB port CD-ROM drive Windows 2000,Windows 98,Windows XP Driver Installation (WIN2000) Follow the steps below to install Window 2000 driver of USB-Serial cable: 1. Power on your computer and make sure that the USB port is enabled and working properly. 2. Plug in the USB-Serial cable into the USB port and run the Found New Hardware Wizard to assist you in setting up the new device. Click Next to continue. 3. Insert the USB-Serial cable software driver into the CD-ROM drive and click next to continue. For Windows 98, click Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommend) and click to search driver from the CD-ROM drive \Proton\USB Driver for PSU-RS2. 10

10 4. Windows will detect the driver and Click Next to continue installation. 5. Click Finish to continue and let Windows copy the needed files to your hard disk. 6. You can to check the Device Manager and see the Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port) 11

11 Installation - Electrical Earth connections & Cable Screens Any unit with a mains supply input must have a separate earth wire of at least 6mm 2 attached, this is in addition to the earth wire within the mains lead, do not rely on the mounting bolts to provide an earth path. Use screened cable for all signal connections. Ensure that the cable screens are properly clamped in the glands on the PSU-RS2 units. Ensure that screens of cables connecting to the customer s equipment are clamped to earth at their destination. CANBUS Connections between Modules Cable types A cable with a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms is required when rewireable connectors are used and it is advisable to use DEVICENET standard cable to achieve this, also the cable overall diameter must fit the connector sealing gland. Where the cable length is very short [less than three metres], the cable impedance becomes less important and almost any screened cable can be used. Using pre-wired TURCK connectors [ is generally the best but the most expensive solution. Termination resistors The CANBUS must have termination resistors at each end of the bus, the configuration diagrams show that the gauge are always at the end of the bus therefore these units are supplied with termination resistors connected internally. The PSU-RS2 forms a node on the network when used with the PLED1 therefore the termination resistor is not connected but, if the PLED1 is not used, the termination on the PSU-RS2 is connected by linking the terminal marked 120R to CANH through the dip switch. Isolation The bus driver, 24V supply and the shield pin are isolated from earth at the gauge head but referenced to earth at the PSU-RS2 modules, the cable screen must be connected to the EMC gland on these modules. 12

12 Cable CANBUS/DeviceNet connection to PSU-RS2 The PSU-RS2 has one CANBUS port and one optional DeviceNet port, CANBUS is for connection to gauge head and the other is to DeviceNet. 13 PSU-RS2 configuration Procedure Enter parameter setting mode: Power off PSU-RS2 and connect it to computer via RS232 cable. Set Hyper terminal as (ANSIW, 9600, 8, N, 1, N) Set DIP switch as: 1=ON; 2=OFF; 3=OFF; 4=OFF; Power on the unit, it will go to parameter setting main menu as below. Or In normal mode, enter command config to enter setting mode; Press ESC key to exit current menu and return to upper level menu. Parameter will be stored automatically after modification; new parameters only take effect after restart. 17 Serial Communications for Diameter Gauge CANBUS This is used to communicate between the gauge heads and the other Proton modules. The gauge automatically recognises that it is connected to a module and configures the bus appropriately. It is the only way that the modules and gauge head can be interconnected. The customer cannot use the CANBUS for any other purpose! It is not intended for use with an external CAN network and cannot be used to connect several gauge heads together. Reading FFT Data There are 1024 useful FFT results, these are the amplitudes of the frequency components starting from FFT sample rate / 4096 and ending at FFT sample rate 1024 / 4096, the frequency step is FFT sample rate / The gauge output buffer holds 8 results, the PROFIBUS master must send the Address index of FFT results to the gauge which defines which group of 8 from the 1024 results, is placed into the output buffer. These are updated after the PROFIBUS transmission therefore the new values cannot be read until the next PROFIBUS transmission. The FFT data is read as follows: Set the FFT Run / Hold state to Run. Set the FFT sample rate, this will clear the input buffer and start a new data collection period. A new set of results only becomes available when the Time remaining to update FFT result reaches zero therefore this must be tested before reading the results, the FFT results available bit only means that old results are available. Set Address index of FFT results to 0. On the next transmission increment Address index of FFT results by 8 and read the first 8 results together with the True address index of FFT results [the index will still be the previous value [0] since it is not updated until the transmission is finished. Increment the Address index of FFT results by 8 and read again, repeat this process until all the results are read. If the FFT Run / Hold state is left in the Run state then data will remain stable until a new set of data is collected [this time is 4096s / sampling rate], if the data cannot be read in this time then set the state to Hold until reading is finished. RS232 This is available on the PSU-RS2-AR and PSU-RS2 module and allows for data transmission to standard PCs and any PLC with an RS232 interface. It can work with two protocols as follows: Proton Standard RS232 Page access mode Proton Standard RS232 Parameter Access Protocol 18

18 Beta Standard RS232 Parameter Access Protocol The data format is as follows: No parity No flow control Data bits = 7 Stop bits = 2 Parameter Mode This shows the access codes for individual parameters or blocks of consecutive parameters, these are normally used in a production line environment where the gauge is connected to a PLC or similar device. The parameters are sub-divided into Input and Output parameters which mimic the PROFIBUS Master to Gauge and Gauge to Master pages. Page Mode This is used typically with a Hyper Terminal PC program where each code generates a page of data that is normally used for demonstration purposes. The data can be accessed by typing the Numerical or Alphabetical code followed by the enter key, it is then possible to change presets etc on the page. 19

20 RS232 Output Protocol Request continuously repeating values for one or a range of Output parameters Notes: The repartition rate is approximately 10 per second for a single parameter at a baud rate of at least 1200; if several parameters are sent then the baud rate must be increased otherwise the repartition rate falls. The parameter value has the appropriate number of digits and includes the sign, as needed but not the decimal point [0.5mm = 500]. 27 Modbus Communications for Diameter Gauge PSU-RS2 RS232 Port Note that the 0V terminal is referenced to earth and the RTS & CTS not used. The maximum baud rate depends on the cable capacitance and length; for overall screened cable with total screen to core plus core to core capacitance of 300pF per metre, the maximum rate is as follows: Cable length Baud rate 0 to 10m 38K4 10 to 20m 19K2 20 to 40m 9K6 40 to 80m 4K8 Set baud rate through Proton protocol. 29 Serial Communication Data Standard Introduction CANBUS This is only used to communicate between the gauge head and the other Proton modules; the customer has no control over the data on this bus. PROFIBUS The length gauge head is configured as a PROFIBUS slave. Its operation is totally independent of the CANBUS & RS232 and can operate simultaneously with them. The data that is transferred is described in the PROFIBUS Master to Gauge and RS232 Input Parameter List. This bus is optional and must be fitted during manufacture; it is not possible to add it afterwards. RS232 This is only available on the PSU-RS2-ARQ module and allows for data transmission to standard PCs and any PLC with an RS232 interface. It works independently of the PROFIBUS but the PSU-RS2-ARQ must be connected to the SL1016 to enable the RS232 to function. It can work with two protocols as follows: Proton Standard RS232 Page access mode Proton Standard RS232 Parameter Access Protocol The data format is as follows: No parity No flow control Data bits = 8 Stop bits = 1 Proton Standard RS232 Page Access Mode This is typically used with a Hyper Terminal PC program where each code generates a page of data that is normally used for Demonstration, Test and Calibration purposes. The data can be accessed by typing the Numerical or Alphabetical code followed by the enter key, it is then possible to change presets etc on the page. 30 Proton Standard RS232 Parameter Access Protocol This uses a protocol to access individual parameters or blocks of parameters and is typically used in a production line environment where the gauge is connected to a PLC or similar device. Notes The parameters are split into Input and Output groups, the Input parameters can be both read and written, the Output parameters can only be read The parameter number is the same as the word address used for Profibus data except for the special code con1sec ; refer to the PROFIBUS Master to Gauge and RS232 Input Parameter List for the parameter numbers For Input data: when a word is defined as bits then four hexadecimal characters are required to form the bits 15~0; when a word is defined as a data value then only sufficient characters to define the value in decimal format, with the decimal point where appropriate, are needed; where the data is of double word length then only the first word address is used For Output data: when a word is defined as bits then four hexadecimal characters will be sent; when a word is defined as a data value it is converted to a decimal number with the decimal point but without leading zeros; where a double word is used then only the first word address is used to request the data, the data in both words is automatically converted to a single value If a PC keyboard is being used to enter the codes then the carriage return plus line feed are replaced by the Enter key Set the value of an Input parameter Write Format: & Input Parameter number Space Value without decimal point [0.5m = 50] Request value once for one or a range of Input parameters The request and reply format is identical to the # format given below for output data except that # is replaced by? Request value once for one or a range of Output parameters The request and reply format is identical to the # format given below except that # is replaced by ~. 31

31 Request continuously repeating values for one or a range of Output parameters The repartition rate is the maximum possible and only limited by the data length and baud rate. The parameters must be consecutive when requesting multiple parameters. Request continuously repeating output of length and speed This uses the code con1sec in place of the parameter number. The repartition rate is once per second with decimal point but no spaces.
