3 1. Foreword Foreword For your own safety and protection from bodily injuries, carefully read, understand and follow the safety instructions in this manual. Please operate and maintain your Wacker machine in accordance with the instructions in this manual. Your Wacker machine will reward your attention by giving trouble-free operation and a high degree of availability. Replace faulty or defective components Immediately. Safety instructions for 3-phase frequency and voltage converters Safety instructions 2.1 General Converters may only be operated by persons who are at least 18 years of age are physically and mentally fit for this job have been instructed in operating with converters and proved their ability for the job to the employer may be expected to carry out the job they are charged with carefully. The persons must be assigned the job of operating converters by the employer Converters may only be operated if the operating instructions of the manufacturer relating to the specific product and these safety instructions are observed The persons entrusted with the operation of converters are to be familiarised with the necessary safety precautions relating to the machine. In case of unusual applications the contractor must compile and issue the necessary additional instructions. 2.2 Operation The actuation (control) elements and safety equipment must not be inadmissibly tampered with or their operation prevented It must be ensured that the converter is only connected to the voltage and frequency specified on the nameplate. Choose correct cross section for extension cords Before the converter is commissioned, the machine must be installed in a stable condition to prevent it from unintentionally tipping over, slipping or falling. 6 Safety instructions The inverter may only be connected to electric power supplies fitted with residual current devices (RCD). Current impulse sensitive protection measures according to DIN 0664 standards or universally current sensitive should be used as RCD protection measures The converter must not to be switched on and off by inserting the plug into the socket or pulling it out. This also applies to the equipment to be connected to the converter The power supply cable of the converter must not be used to pull the plug out of the socket The power supply cable of the external vibrator must not be used to pull the plug out of the socket Electric equipment and material may only be used if they comply with the operational and local safety requirements. They must be in proper conditions and they must be maintained in this condition It is forbidden to operate converters in hazardous environments. Danger to life 2.3 Safety checks Before starting operation, the operator has to check that all control and safety devices function properly Check electric cables regularly for damage Converters may only be operated with all the safety equipment If defects in the safety equipment or other defects are detected which impair the safe operation of the internal vibrator, the supervisor is to be notified without delay The machine must to be switched off immediately in case of defects jeopardizing the operational safety of the equipment. 7 Safety instructions 2.4 Maintenance Only use original spare parts. Modifications to this machine including the adjustment of the maximum engine speed set by the manufacturer are subject to the express approval of WACKER. In case of nonobservance all liabilities shall be refused The converter is to be disconnected from the mains supply for maintenance and repair work Work on the electric parts of the machines may only be carried out by skilled technicians The green/yellow protective earth conductor of the connection cable must be longer so that it does not become detached if the strain relief clamp fails. There is a danger to life and limb if this connection is broken. After repair work, check protective earth conductor for continuity All safety devices must be reinstalled properly immediately after maintenance and repair jobs have been completed. 2.5 Transport For loading and transporting converters with lifting devices, suitable attachments are to be provided at the specified attachment points On transport vehicles converters are to be secured against slipping or tipping over. 2.6 Maintenance checks According to the conditions and frequency of use, converters have to be checked for safe operation at least once every 6 monts by skilled technicians, such as those found at WACKER service stations, and be repaired if necessary. Description Description 4.1 Field of application To be used for the connection of WACKER high-frequency external and internal vibrators with (see technical specifications). 4.2 Transport to work site Conditions: Tie down the converter securely during transport on the loading surface of a vehicle. 10 Description 4.3 Description of function The input voltage is rectified in the power inverter assembly of the converter. The direct voltage so obtained is then converted into three-phase alternating current in the inverted rectifier (dc. - ac. converter) and simultaneously the frequency is increased from 50 to 200 Hz. As an average value the dc. - ac. converter, which functions in the form of a "pulse-width modulation", puts out a sinusoidal current, allowing for a fault-proof operation of the connected units. The full use of the power output of the converter is possible owing to a smooth start of the connected units. 11 5. Work Work 5.1 Switching on the unit The converter must be connected to a 230/240 V, 50/60 Hz single phase alternating current net. FUE's may be connected to a power generator only if the operating voltage of the generator lies within 230 V + 15% under any load conditions, the FUE alone is connected to the generator and if the manufacturer of the power unit provides for equipment with capacitors to be connected. If the FUE is to be driven by a geneator, use only a synchronous generator if possible. Do not use the converter's on-off switch to start up or to stop the connected units. First switch on the FUE and only then start up the connected units. Proceed inversely when stopping the units. 5.2 Connecting units during operation The converter recognizes when additional units are connected and consequently increases current and voltage to their rated values. 5.3 Switching off the unit Switch off the connected units first and only then proceed to switch off the converter. 12 Maintenance 6. Maintenance The converter may only be opened at least 1 minutes after the plug has been pulled out of the socket, as this is the time required for the discharging of the capacitors. Do not perform any type of work if the converter is connected to the mains. 6.1 Maintenance schedule Component Maintenance work Maintenance interval Supply cable Check for perfect condition; replace defective cable. daily 6.2 Trouble shooting A luminous diode fitted on the integrated printed circuit eases the diagnose in case of an equipment failure. The equipment must be opened to observe the diode. Only to be carried out by an electrical specialist. The equipment is live during trouble shooting. Helps to self-protect the equipment. The equipment will only work for 10 seconds within the permissible overload limits. Then the equipment will cut off. Automatic restart. (various transitions between cut-off and restart are possible) Eliminate cause leading to overload, - current consumption of connected equipment too high, - measure current consumption and compare it to value shown on nameplate. no flashing Short circuit identification The equipment will cut off and will not restart again. Eliminate possible causes: - short circuit of phases in connected equipment, - two- phase running in connected equipment, - mechanical failure in connected equipment, Reset: Turn off equipment and then turn on again. no double flashing Excess temperature: T > 85 C The equipment will cut off and will not restart again. - Let equipment cool down, (leave equipment with switch in position I, fan will carry on running.) - check for overload, eventually overload case a) for extended period of time. Reset: Turn off equipment and then turn on again. Danger to life The printed circuit is live (under tension) as long as the luminous diode is green, red, red-green or flashing, even after disconnection of the power supply. The luminous diode will go out once the condensers have dumped (discharged). Only then start with the repair work. T00880GB.fm 13

14 Maintenance Pay attention to the following when replacing the printed circuit: Replace the printed circuit board plus the corresponding housing if a replacement of the printed circuit is required, as printed circuit and housing constitute an nondetachable unit due to sealing reasons. 1) Luminous diode 2) Housing fastening points T00880GB.fm 14

Disposal 9.1 Disposal of the machine If the machine has reached the end of its service life, it has to be handed into a suitable recycling operation for environmental friendly reuse or recycling. During disposal observe the regional rules and regulations. e.g. the European Directive for obsolete electical and electronic devices. Do not dispose the machine in the household rubbish.
