4 About This Document Overview Purpose Intended Audience OceanStor Dorado V3 series products (Dorado V3 for short) are Huawei's brand-new enterprise-level all flash storage. This document describes Dorado V3 solutions and reference architectures for VMware Horizon View scenarios such as performance optimization, data protection, data migration, development and testing, virtualization, as well as cloud hosting. Dorado V3 enterprise-level all flash storage provides the following features to meet critical requirements of virtual desktop services: High performance: A low latency of 500 μs, 150,000 transactional IOPS, and an analysis bandwidth of 6 GB/s High reliability: Global garbage collection ensures the minimum number of erases. Wear leveling and anti-wear leveling ensure minimum failure rates, dynamic RAID ensures quick reconstruction, and DIF ensures end-to-end I/O reliability. In addition, performance-lossless snapshots, active-active systems, and replication provide solution-level reliability. High utilization rate: Dynamic RAID improves capacity utilization rate, and provides simplified configuration, deduplication and compression to reduce application data. Flexibility and ease of use: Single storage pools simplify planning and configuration, heterogeneous LUN migration simplifies data migration, and one-click snapshots simplify testing and development. Excellent compatibility: Dorado V3 has sound compatibility with a wide range of heterogeneous ecosystems and supports the following application interfaces: Oracle HADR, VMware VAAI, VMware VASA, VMware SRM, VMware vcenter plug-in, Windows ODX, and interfaces of OpenStack. This document describes solutions and reference architectures when Dorado V3 is used for VMware Horizon View VDI services. It provides reference information for Huawei partners and customers to help them simplify IT system planning and deployment and reduce O&M risks. This document is intended for Huawei employees, partners, and customers. 6 1 Huawei OceanStor Dorado V3 Products and Technologies 1.1 Introduction to OceanStor Dorado V3 OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system is Huawei's next-generation all flash storage product designed to meet medium- and large-sized enterprises' requirements for mass data storage, high-speed data access, high availability, high utilization, energy saving, and ease-of-use. Delivering industry-leading performance and various efficiency improvement mechanisms, the OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system provides comprehensive high-performance solutions, maximizing return on investment. The solutions are applicable to scenarios such as large-database online transaction processing/online analytical processing (OLTP/OLAP), high-performance computing (HPC), and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Figure 1-1 Appearance of OceanStor Dorado V3 series products In addition to providing enterprises with high-performance and efficient storage services, the OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system supports advanced data backup and disaster recovery technologies, ensuring secure and smooth operation of data services. Besides, OceanStor Dorado V3 offers various methods for easy-to-use management and convenient local and remote maintenance, remarkably reducing management and maintenance costs. 7 1.1.1 OceanStor Dorado V3 Hardware OceanStor Dorado6000 V3 Dorado6000 V3 controller, interface card, disk enclosures, and disks (SAS SSD) OceanStor Dorado5000 V3 SAS Dorado5000 V3 controller, interface card, disk enclosures, and disks (SAS SSD) OceanStor Dorado5000 V3 NVMe Dorado5000 V3 controller, interface card, disk enclosures, and disks (NVMe SSD) OceanStor Dorado V3 Features High Performance Flexible Scalability The OceanStor Dorado V3 enterprise-level all flash storage system supports concurrent million-level IOPS and keeps stable low latency. Superior hardware acceleration OceanStor Dorado V3 is equipped with 64-bit multi-core processors, high-speed and large-capacity caches, various high-speed host interface modules, and back-end disk interface modules. It offers better storage performance than traditional storage systems. PCIe 3.0 interconnection Dorado V3 controllers are interconnected using PCIe 3.0 with high speed to ensure a low latency under a high IOPS. All HSSD flash disks The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system uses Huawei solid state disks (HSSDs). Its storage operating system is designed based on HSSDs, enabling performance of HSSDs to give into full play and remarkably accelerating performance of the storage system. Full-stripe write The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system uses redirect-on-write (ROW) for full-stripe write to reduce CPU usage and ensure optimal write performance. The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system is protected by measures against component and power failures and it uses advanced technologies to minimize risks of disk failures and data loss, ensuring system reliability. Component failure protection Storage system components are in 1+1 redundancy mode and work in active-active mode. Normally, the two redundant components are working simultaneously and share loads. If one component fails or is offline, the other one takes over all loads without affecting ongoing services. RAID 2.0+ Huawei Proprietary and Confidential Copyright Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 7

8 High Availability The RAID 2.0+ underlying virtualization technology is used to automatically balance loads across disks. If a disk encounters a fault, all the other disks in the same disk domain help reconstruct the faulty disk's service data, achieving a 20-fold faster reconstruction speed than traditional RAID and significantly reducing the possibility of multi-disk failure. In addition, RAID 2.0+ For Flash supports dynamic RAID and flexible data layout, accelerating SSD reconstruction. Power failure protection Built-in backup battery units (BBUs) supply power to controller enclosures in the event of unexpected power failures. BBUs enable cache data to be written to built-in disks of controllers to avoid data loss. Global wear leveling and anti-wear leveling Global wear leveling: The wear degrees vary among SSDs. Some SSDs are damaged ahead of the normal period. As a result, the SSDs will fail and the maintenance costs will increase. The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system adopts the global wear leveling technology that implements wear leveling among all SSDs, preventing SSDs failures. Global anti-wear leveling: If the wear degree of an SSD reaches the threshold, the OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system uses the global anti-wear leveling technology to enable the SSD not to be worn. The SSDs are worn one by one. This technology prevents concurrent failures of multiple SSDs, thereby significantly improving reliability of the storage system. Disk pre-copy The disk pre-copy technology enables the storage system to routinely check hardware status, and migrate data from any failing disk to minimize the risks of data loss. The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system employs the Turbo Module technology, online capacity expansion, and disk roaming to ensure uninterrupted services during routine maintenance. Turbo Module technology The Turbo Module technology enables hot swap of controllers, fans, power supplies, interface modules, BBUs, and disk modules. All these modules can be operated online. Online capacity expansion Online capacity expansion allows users to easily add disks to disk domains online. Disk roaming Disk roaming enables the storage system to automatically identify relocated disks and resume their services. The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system provides multiple advanced data protection technologies to ensure data security and continuous system running even when catastrophic disasters occur. Writable snapshot Reserved space is not required for creating and activating snapshots while performance is not affected during snapshot creation and activation. 9 Remote replication backs up local data onto a remote storage system for disaster recovery. The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system provides multiple resource application technologies and flexible resource management to protect customers' storage investment. SmartVirtualization SmartVirtualization enables a local storage system to centrally manage storage resources of third-party storage systems, simplifying storage system management and reducing maintenance costs. SmartMigration SmartMigration migrates LUNs in or between storage systems, adjusting and allocating resources along with business development. Virtualization, Intelligence, and Efficiency The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system absorbs the concept of "Virtualization, Intelligence, and Efficiency" that fits the up-to-date storage design idea and wins a leading position for the storage system. Compared with traditional storage systems, the OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system achieves higher storage space utilization, faster data reconstruction, smarter performance allocation technology, and finer service quality control. To obtain the previous achievements, the following technologies contribute: RAID 2.0+ underlying virtualization RAID 2.0+ underlying virtualization technology divides disk storage space into small-sized data blocks and uses the blocks to create RAID groups for fine-grained resource management. This technology enables automatic load balancing, higher storage performance, better storage space utilization, faster disk reconstruction, and delicate storage space management, serving as a basis for a number of other advanced storage technologies. Intelligent thin provisioning (SmartThin) SmartThin allocates storage space on demand rather than pre-allocating all storage space at the initial stage. It is more cost-effective because customers can start business with a few disks and add disks based on onsite requirements. In this way, the initial purchase cost and TCO are reduced. Deduplication and compression (SmartDedupe&SmartCompression) The OceanStor Dorado V3 storage system uses global and online SmartDedupe&SmartCompression to reduce the storage capacity occupied by data and times of I/Os on SSDs. The two technologies remarkably improve the storage space utilization, prolong the service life of SSDs, and reduce the investment costs as well as the O&M costs. 1.2 Integration of OceanStor Dorado V3 and VMware vsphere Huawei Dorado V3 storage system and VMware vsphere are deeply integrated to support multiple storage interface features, including VAAI, VASA, native multipathing, and SRM disaster recovery. Such integration can bring out the best of storage features and maximize the storage efficiency. In addition, Huawei Dorado V3 storage system supports storage and integration management based on VMware vcenter. 10 1.2.1 VAAI VAAI SAN on VMware vsphere and simplifies the management process, thereby improving management efficiency. VMware vsphere provides VAAI for storage devices to enhance efficiency and reduce resources consumed on the channel between the host and the storage system. VAAI consists of VAAI-SAN, VAAI-NAS, and VAAI Thin. When SAN storage supports VMware VAAI, the ESXi host enabled with VAAI automatically identifies and enables VAAI of the storage system. VAAI SAN consists of the following four parts: ATS: Atomic Test & Set ATS Only Full Copy/Extended Copy Block Zero/Write Same VAAI Thin Provisioning VASA Multipathing VAAI Thin Provisioning is a feature targeting for storage thin LUNs. The following functions are included: Thin Provisioning Stun Thin Provisioning Space Threshold Warning: space warning Dead Space Reclamation: space reclaiming Among the three functions, the space reclaiming function is most important. You can run the UNMap SCSI command to reclaim the storage space of thin LUNs. Huawei Dorado V3 storage can be integrated with VMware vcenter through the VASA adapter. After the integration, you can quickly view the usage status and running status of the storage system and therefore, monitor and manage the storage status comprehensively. Huawei Dorado V3 storage supports both VMware-based native multipathing and Huawei proprietary UltraPath, thereby ensuring business continuity DR Management (SRM and BCManager) The storage system works with VMware Site Recovery Management (SRM) or Huawei BCManager to enable disaster recovery for VMware vsphere platform, providing higher reliability and faster service recovery for services on the virtualization platform VMware vcenter Integrated Storage Management Huawei Dorado V3 storage provides vcenter-based storage integration management plug-in OceanStor esdk vcenter Plugin for VMware vsphere. 11 convenient management for storage on vsphere Center, and functions at the LUN layer, such as data store creation and deletion, snapshots, as well as rollback, simplifying management and improving management efficiency. Functions of the vcenter plug-in are as follows: Detecting and Uninstalling Devices vsphere Client detects the used device through the plug-in and releases devices that are not applicable. Displaying Device Information Creating a Datastore Querying VM Information After detecting the device, vsphere Client can check basic information about the device, including controller IP address, device name, location information, and capacity. To obtain storage resources of block devices, vsphere Client needs to create a datastore corresponding to the LUN. vsphere Client can check all datastores and detailed information about datastores under a specific ESXi host. If you choose a specific datastore, corresponding LUN or file system information about the datastore is displayed. Mounting or Unmounting LUNs Backup and Recovery vsphere Client mounts LUN of the device to the host and displays the LUN name on vsphere Client. vsphere Client backs up and recovers snapshots of the LUN mounted on the ESXi host vrealize Operations Manager Integration By connecting Operations Manager and vrealize Operations Manager, Huawei Dorado V3 storage enables unified monitoring and management of storage at the Operation Manager layer. 12 2 VMware vsphere Architecture 2.1 VMware Horizon View VMware Horizon View is a desktop virtualization platform based on the VMware vsphere basic architecture and an enterprise-level solution that provides end-to-end virtual desktop VMware Horizon View Basic Architecture Figure 2-1 shows the basic architecture of VMware Horizon View. 13 Apart from vsphere basic components, Horizon View requires components described in the following section Required Components Windows Active Directory The Windows domain controller provides domain services for the whole virtual desktop businesses. Horizon View Connection Server Horizon View Connection Server is a software service used to connect View Client and View Agent. It performs authentication on users, and redirects users' requests to VMs, physical desktops, or terminal servers. Horizon View Replica Server With Horizon View Replica Server, HA and load balancing functions of View Connection Server can be enabled. Horizon View Security Server Horizon View Composer Horizon View Agent Horizon View Client Key Features Linked Clone Horizon View Security Server is an optional component used to install View Connection Server when the server is in the security mode. Horizon View Composer is a mandatory component for Linked Clone, used for batch VM clones based on VM snapshots. Horizon View Agent is a mandatory component. It can provide services and be managed by the view administrator once installed on VMs used by virtual desktops, physical servers, or terminal servers. Installed on the terminal computer using remote virtual desktops, Horizon View Client can be used to communicate with View Connection Server, allowing users to connect to virtual desktops. VMware introduces Linked Clone to Horizon View. Linked Clone allows VM clone in batches based on VM snapshots. The VMs generated by using Linked Clone share the same VM copy, reducing occupied space and deployment time significantly. 14 View Storage Accelerator Challenges In View 5.0 or later, View Storage Accelerator (VSA) is introduced to destage the system disk data of VMs to the memory of the ESXi host. This function is based on the Content-Based Read Cache (CBRC) function of the ESXi host. After this function is enabled, the ESXi host directly reads VM system files from the host cache rather than from the storage system repeatedly, lowering read latency significantly and improving performance. The large-scale desktop virtualization is faced with many challenges, including boot storm, login storm, load in the steady state, and antivirus scan storm. Boot Storm and Login Storm When all users start their VMs simultaneously, a large number of random read I/Os and a small number of write I/Os are generated at the shared storage layer. This phenomenon is known as boot storm. IOPS of a user during the boot storm phase is from about 150 to 300. When all users log in to their virtual desktops simultaneously, a large number of random small I/Os are generated at the shared storage layer. This phenomenon is known as login storm. Unlike a boot storm, a login storm cannot be avoided because generally users log in to the system at the same time. Steady State Among all usage phases of the virtual desktops, the boot storm has the highest requirements on the read performance of storage, which exerts a great deal of pressure on storage. To mitigate impact of the boot storm, users can start virtual desktops by phases or by batches, or store OS data on all flash storage systems. The login storm occurs when users start to work in the morning and at noon. During a login storm, a large number of Big Data write and read operations exert significant impact on the storage. A steady state indicates load balancing when all users are using virtual desktops. The load in steady state varies with user activities. In the steady state, the read-and-write ratio of each user is from 1:9 to 2:8. Table 2-1 lists load types in the steady state based on user types. This phenomenon is known as antivirus scan storm. Generally, antivirus scan is performed during non-business hours to avoid impact on user experience. 2.2 vrealize Operations for Horizon Running on vrealize Operations Manager as an adapter, vrealize Operations for Horizon interacts with Broker Agent on the host of View Connection Server, remote desktop VMs managed by VMware Horizon View, RDS hosts, and Desktop Agent on the terminal server. After interaction, vrealize Operations for Horizon collects, analyzes, organizes, and displays data information about the basic architecture of virtual desktops to the system manager Business Architecture Figure 2-2 shows the business architecture of VMware vrealize Operations for Horizon View. Horizon Adapter runs on the cluster node or remote collection node of vrealize Operations Manager. A single Horizon Adapter instance can be created to monitor multiple Horizon containers. During the configuration of Broker Agent, you can match Broker Agent with the Horizon Adapter instance. vrealize Operations for Horizon Desktop Agent vrealize Operations for Horizon Desktop Agent runs on every remote desktop VM or RDS host in the VMware Horizon View VDI environment. vrealize Operations for Horizon Desktop Agent collects indicators and performance data, and sends them to Horizon Adapter. vrealize Operations for Horizon Broker Agent vrealize Operations for Horizon Broker Agent is a Windows service running on the host of Horizon Connection Server. It collects information about Horizon lists and sends the information to Horizon Adapter. If the event database is included in the VMware Horizon View VDI environment, Broker Agent must collect events from the event database and send the events to Horizon Adapter. Alternatively, Broker Agent can be configured to only monitor specified desktop pools in the VMware Horizon View VDI environment. 17 3 Performance Optimization of VMware Horizon View 3.1 Enhanced Business Scale and User Experience of VMware Horizon View, As Well As Reduced Maintenance Window Duration and TCO Scenario Common virtual desktop businesses are divided into several phases, including boot storm, login storm, steady state, idle state, and antivirus scan storm. With the growth of businesses, the scale of virtual desktop is gradually expanding, exerting increasing pressure on storage and computing resources during the boot storm, login storm, and steady state, and requiring better performance of the storage system. Under such circumstances, how to choose a proper storage system for enterprises to expand the business scale, as well as how to improve user experience and reduce TCO are key factors concerning the architecture design and planning of current virtual desktop businesses. 18 A boot storm usually occurs during system maintenance. Generally, power-on and power-off or restart will not occur in batches. An antivirus scan storm usually occurs during off-peak hours. In addition, in traditional VDI scenarios, the speed of desktop deployment is slow, the delivery and rollout period is long, and maintenance and cleanup consume a large amount of time. For example, it takes several days on average to deliver the virtual desktop to 2000 users and operations such as refresh and restoration are time-consuming, thereby impairing the experience of users and maintenance personnel. Three common maintenance operations are as follows: Refresh: restores the virtual desktop to the initial state of the Linked Clone parent VM for the sake of clearing logs and software installed by users to spare capacity. Recompose: updates the status of the virtual desktop to the selected snapshot of the parent VM, which is used for Windows Update, software installation, or synchronization of the virtual desktop after settings are changed. Rebalance: moves virtual desktops among all available data storage systems to balance capacity and loads of storage systems. Figure 3-2 Maintenance business scenario Solution Common maintenance operations of Linked Clone desktops include Deploy, Refresh, Recompose, and Rebalance. To cope with virtual desktop scenarios where the business scale is large, the business growth is rapid, and requirements on businesses are high, Huawei launched the Dorado V3 Huawei Proprietary and Confidential Copyright Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 18

19 Solution Architecture enterprise-level all flash storage system. Such a storage system brings the best of high-performance SSDs and the deduplication and compression feature, providing customers with high-performance, low-latency, and low-tco virtual desktop solutions. Huawei Dorado V3 enterprise-level all flash storage provides customers with services for over 2000 users. Dorado6000 V3 supports up to 5000 online end users. In addition to ensuring user scale, Huawei Dorado V3 enterprise-level all flash storage improves the speed of deployment and maintenance by several times. Figure 3-3 Solution architecture of VMware Horizon View VDI Customer Benefits With Huawei Dorado V3 enterprise-level all flash storage enabled, the following benefits are provided: Customers can rapidly deploy and delivery the virtual desktop. The service supporting capability can be improved remarkably, making it easier to deal with the pressure brought by the boot storm, login storm, and antivirus scan storm. The number of supported virtual desktop users is improved significantly. The maintenance Window duration is reduced significantly, improving the experience of users and maintenance personnel Typical Configurations Table 3-1 lists recommended typical configurations of different storage systems. 21 4 Data Migration of VMware Horizon View 4.1 Online Migration Through Dorado V3 SmartMigration Scenario Solution With the rapid development of digitization and continuous expansion of services, the existing storage environment of many enterprises cannot support the rapidly increasing business demand. Therefore, it is necessary to replace servers and hardware devices, such as storage devices, which exerts high requirements on the data migration method. In the data migration process, a project needs to ensure business continuity and high data reliability. For example, if you replace the existing heterogeneous storage system that is compatible with the new Huawei storage system, you need to migrate business data of the original storage system to the new storage system based on SmartVirtualization and SmartMigration to ensure business data consistency. Before service migration, SmartVirtualization is used to takes over LUNs from heterogeneous storage systems. After the takeover, you can manage those LUNs as they are on the local storage system. For this reason, the local storage system does not know whether the LUNs engaged in service migration are from a heterogeneous storage system or not, ensuring proper service migration. This scenario describes migrating data from the original storage system by using SmartVirtualization of OceanStor Dorado V3, which is applicable to scenarios where upper-layer businesses are migrated through the lower-layer storage. Migration personnel need to have a detailed understanding of storage features and operations. Connect the new OceanStor Dorado V3 all flash storage system to the VDI without changing the original VDI environment architecture. In this way, the host, the existing storage system, and the new storage system are allocated to the same zone, enabling online data migration through simple configurations. Perform automatic scanning on all remote devices under the Data Protection option of the new storage system. LUNs mapped to the original storage system can be automatically identified. 23 Figure 4-3 Creating edevlun Customer Benefits There are three LUN masquerading modes: no masquerading, basic masquerading, and extended masquerading. No masquerading: applicable to offline takeovers. Basic masquerading: replaces edevlun with information of the original LUN, for example the WWN information. Extended masquerading: replaces basic masquerading information, the version number of the SCSI protocol, and information of the owning controller. On OceanStor Dorado6000 V3, choose Provisioning > Resource Performance Tuning > SmartMigration, and click Create to create a destination LUN for data migration. In this way, online takeover and online migration are enabled. Dorado V3 SmartMigration provides the following benefits: Enables online data migration without service interruption. Provides a simple, steady, and secure data migration process. Allows rapid data migration on the storage side, thereby releasing host resources. 24 5 Best Practices This document describes the planning and test of the best practice of VMware Horizon View VDI scenario with a scale of 2000, highlighting improvement brought by Huawei OceanStor Dorado V3 all flash storage. 5.1 Software Planning Required Software Package Table 5-1 lists main software used during a test. 25 5.2 Hardware Planning Server Planning Storage Planning Use two servers to install the basic architecture, including domain controllers, vcenter Server, and View Connection Server. In the virtual desktop environment, two vcpus each with a 2-GB memory are planned for each user and 2000 users require 4000 GB memory. In the event of a large number of users, you are advised to use Huawei E9000 blade servers to save space, power consumption, and redundant devices, thereby reducing the TCO. The View Planner tool and clients connected to the desktop VM are required for the test environment. Therefore, for the load test, you need to plan 125 clients each with a memory of 16 GB, and each client is connected to 16 desktop clouds. In conclusion, this test adopts three E9000 blade servers each with 16 blades. Each blade has two CPUs and the total memory is 256 GB. Every eight blades form a cluster and there are five desktop VM clusters and one client cluster. Two RH2288 V3 serve as the infrastructure. Use one Huawei OceanStor Dorado5000 V3 NVMe for the test. Each desktop VM requires a 50-GB system disk and the total capacity of system disks is 100 TB. Plan multiple LUNs to improve concurrency for better performance. According to a deduplication and compression ratio of 3:1, use 25 x 2 TB SSDs. The RAID level of the storage pool is RAID 6. Create 40 x 2 TB thin LUNs and turn on the deduplication and compression switch. Overall Hardware Configuration Table 5-2 lists hardware and corresponding configurations in the solution. Two Huawei RH2288 V3 servers are used to install the basic architecture, including VMware vcenter Server and VMware Horizon View. 28 5.4 Solution Verification Desktop Provisioning After deploying the basic architecture according to the solution architecture, use View Connection Server to deliver five Linked Clone desktop pools and the total number of virtual desktops is Table 5-5 shows configurations of the delivered desktop pools. 29 Figure 5-2 Status of vcenter Server It takes 2 hours and 20 minutes to deliver all Linked Clone virtual desktops, which is several times faster than traditional storage, enabling rapid deployment and delivery of virtual desktops. View Planner Loading Testing After desktops are delivered, perform View Planner loading test. Figure 5-3 shows the Profile setting of View Planner. The total number of clients for the virtual desktop test is 125. Set Ramp up time to In the AD Groups area, set Workload-Profile to StandardBenchmarkProfile_5i. Figure 5-4 shows the test process. Thanks to the high performance of SSDs, high IOPS of OceanStor Dorado V3, and the ultra-low latency algorithm, when the IOPS increases, the latency and CPU utilization rate keep stable at 200 μs and 15%, respectively, ensuring stable user experience and quick response. When maintenance operations are performed on the whole desktop pool, click Desktop Pools in the Catalog area under Inventory on the right of the VMware Horizon 7 Administrator page. Click the ID of the desktop pool on which maintenance operations are to be performed on the right, and choose a specific operation from the drop-down list of View Composer. Figure 5-10 Maintenance operation options Perform the three maintenance operations for three times each on all the created desktop pools (VDI_Desktop_01 to VDI_Desktop_05), and record the corresponding duration. Take the average value of the duration for each maintenance operation, as shown in Table 5-6. On the Device Manager page of OceanStor Dorado6000 V3, observe the performance data, as shown in Figure Figure 5-11 Storage performance during a boot storm As shown in Figure 5-11, during a boot storm, the IOPS peak value can reach 40,000 for one controller, the peak CPU utilization rate does not exceed 40%, and the latency does not exceed 400 μs.
