9 General Section Chapter 1 1 TPX-4 Overview, Specifications, & Agency Compliance 1.1 Overview The TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem (see Figure 1-1) is a self-contained I/O expansion subsystem that is 1-RU high, 19 rack-mountable, and can be used to extend the PCI capability of host systems to which it is connected; for example, the Themis RES-204s, RES-302s, RES-32XE, and RES-22XE servers, or T-210ML telecommunications server. The TPX-4 supports up to four full-length PCI cards providing data in either 32-bit or 64-bit formats running at 33 MHz (see Figure 1-2, page 1-2). Each TPX-4 contains a power supply and on-board cooling for all PCI slots. The PCI cards are interfaced with the host system through a PCI/PCI InfiniBand bridge operating at either 33 or 66 MHz. Before the TPX-4 can be connected to a host system, a Themis InfiniBand bridge PCI card must be installed (see Host InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card on page1-6. Figure 1-1. TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem Flow Diagram The TPX-4 can be ordered to support either of two types of TPX-4-to-host datatransfer media, copper-wire cable (transmission up to 17 meters long) or fiber-optic cable (transmission up to 300 meters long, multimode, or 1 kilometer, single mode) at up to 2.5-gigabits/second (Gb/s; see following Note). Only one media type can be used at the same time. Note: Transmission media (copper wire or fiber-optic cable) between the TPX-4 and host computer is configurable with jumper-pins on both the TPX-4 chassis Interface Board and the host InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card. 1-2

All controls and 6 of 7 indicators are accessed directly from the TPX-4 front panel (see Figure 1-3 on page 1-4). Table 1-2. 14 TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem Installation Manual Host InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card Communications from the host computer to the TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem is made through a Themis InfiniBand Bridge card installed on the host s 5V, 33-MHz, 32/64-bit PCI bus (see Figure 1-6). To complete the communications link, you must install: 1 fiber-optic cable between port 7 of the TPX-4 (see Figure 1-2, page 1-2) and port 7 of the host InfiniBand Bridge card, or 1 copper-wire cable between port 6 of the TPX-4 (see Figure 1-2, page 1-2) and port 6 of the host InfiniBand Bridge card. Themis InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card The InfiniBand Bridge card supports a single connection only, through either port 7 for a fiber-optic cable, or port 6 for a copper-wire cable. Ports 5 and 4 are reserved for future applications (see Section 2.1, InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card Installation, on page 2-1 for details on how to install the InfiniBand Bridge card). 1-6

Only drivers specific to the PCI cards installed in any of the four slots are required. 1.4 Agency Compliance The TPX-4 is designed to conform to the following regulating agency standards: FCC Class A Computing Device CFR 47 Part 15 Subpart J EN :1997 Emission Standard EN55022 Class A CNS Class A 1-8

17 Installation Section Chapter 2 Installation & Operation This chapter describes: How to install the Themis InfiniBand Bridge PCI card into a host computer. How to install a PCI card into any of the four PCI slots of the TPX-4 PCI- Expansion Subsystem. How to turn the TPX-4 system on and off. 2.1 InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card Installation Caution: Use industry-standard ESD grounding techniques when handling all components. Wear an antistatic wrist strap and use an ESD-protected mat. Store ESD-sensitive components in antistatic bags before placing them on any surface. Handle all IC boards by the edges only. 1. Follow the host computer Operations Manual directions for opening up the host system and accessing the PCI bus slots. 2. Unfasten the Phillips screw securing the blank PCI-slot faceplate covering the slot into which you are installing the Themis InfiniBand Bridge PCI card and remove the blank faceplate. 2-1

Remove the InfiniBand Bridge PCI card from its protective sleeve and examine the jumper-pin settings (see Table 2-1 and Figure 2-1 on page 2-3). Table 2-1. Fasten the Bridge PCI card faceplate to the I/O panel with the Phillips screw removed in Step Close the host computer according to Operations Manual directions. 7. If you are using a fiber-optic cable between the host computer and the TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem, connect the cable between the host bridge PCI card s port 7 (see Figure 2-2 on page 2-4) and the TPX-4 s port 7 (see Figure 1-3 on page 1-4). If you are using copper-wire cable between the host computer and the TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem, connect the cable between the host bridge PCI card s port 6 (see Figure 2-2 on page 2-4) and the TPX-4 s port 6 (see Figure 1-3 on page 1-4). 2-2

21 Installation & Operation TPX-4 PCI Card Installation 2.2 TPX-4 PCI Card Installation Caution: Use industry-standard ESD grounding techniques when handling all components. Wear an antistatic wrist strap and use an ESD-protected mat. Store ESD-sensitive components in antistatic bags before placing them on any surface. Handle all IC cards by the edges only. Use the following steps to install a PCI card into a TPX-4 PCI slot: 1. Remove each of the 17 Phillips-head screws (3/16 flathead; see Figure 2-3) that secure the top cover of the TPX-4 cabinet (12 screws are directly on top, 2 screws are on the left side, and 3 screws are on the right side). Slide the top cover slightly toward the front to release the latches (hidden underneath the cover) that secure the rear of the cover to the chassis. This allows the cover to be lifted free from the chassis. 3. Examine the jumper-pin setting of J1602 on the TPX-4 Interface Board (see Figure 2-4) and compare it with Table 2-2 on page 2-7. If you are using a copper InfiniBand link (cable), make sure the jumper is over (shorting) pins 1 and 2 of J1602. If you are using an optical (fiber-optic) InfiniBand link, make sure the jumper is over (shorting) pins 2 and 3 of J1602. Figure 2-4. Location of Jumper-Pin J

Right-Side PCI Card Access Only. If PCI cards are being removed or installed into the right-side PCI card slots (3 and 4) only, follow these substeps (otherwise, go to Step 5 on page 2-8): a. Turn the chassis over and remove the three Phillips-head (3/16 flathead) screws from the bottom of the chassis that are indicated in Figure 2-5. Turn the chassis back over to expose the PCI slots and remove the two 1/4 Button-Head 5/64 Allen screws in the right-hand corner of the front faceplate (see A in Figure 2-6 on page 2-9). This will release the right side beam and expose the right-hand PCI-card holding screws (see B). c. After removing the blank PCI-card faceplate covering the slot into which you are installing a PCI card, firmly insert the PCI card into the slot 3 or slot 4 backplane connector (see Figure 2-7 on page 2-10). If the card is wide enough, slide the opposite edge of the PCI card into the card channel of the right side beam. Secure each PCI card to the chassis with a standard PCI faceplate screw (see Figure 2-7). a. After all PCI cards have been installed, reassemble the TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem by reinstalling the right side beam, bottom cover, and top cover, reversing the above procedures from Step 4 to Step Full PCI Card Access. To access all four PCI slots (1 through 4), remove the 14 Phillips-head screws (3/16 flathead) shown in Figure 2-5 from the bottom of the TPX-4 chassis. Important: Remove only the bottom screws indicated in Figure 2-5. Removing any other screws will cause components to loosen and fall out of the TPX-4 chassis. 6. Turn the chassis back over to expose the PCI slots and remove the two 1/4 Button-Head 5/64 Allen screws in the right-hand corner of the front of the TPX-4 chassis (see A in Figure 2-6 on page 2-9). This will release the right side beam and expose the right-hand PCI-card holding screws (see B). 7. Remove the two 1/4 Button-Head 5/64 Allen screws shown in Figure 2-8 on page This will release the right edge of the front video panel to free the center support housing holding the PCI-slot backplane. 8. To disconnect the video panel from the chassis, remove the flathead Phillips screw shown in Figure 2-9 on page Remove the center support housing containing slots 1 through 4 of the PCI backplane as follows: a. Disconnect the power-supply cable connector at the rear of the chassis (see A and B, Figure 2-10 on page 2-11). 2-8

Remove the two air-flow diverters (sponge foam held by dual-stick tape) shown in Figure 2-11 on page 2-12) c. Carefully pull out the center support housing (see Figure 2-12, page 2-12). 10. Before you can install PCI cards into slots 1 and 2, a mounting block must be removed from the left side of the PCI-card center support housing (see Figure 2-13 on page 2-13). Removing the two Phillips screws that hold this block allows access to the PCI faceplates. 2-11

29 Installation & Operation TPX-4 PCI Card Installation Figure Remove the Left-Side Mounting Block Install a PCI Card into slot 1 and/or slot 2 and replace the mounting block removed in Step 10. Tighten the two screws through the mounting block. 12. Before reassembling the system, install a PCI card into slot 3 and/or slot 4 (see Step 4c) Reassembly Procedure After all PCI cards have been installed, reassemble the TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem by reinstalling the center support housing, front video panel, bottom cover, and top cover, reversing the above procedures from Step 11 to Step

30 TPX-4 PCI-Expansion Subsystem Installation Manual 2.3 Operation General To ensure adequate cooling within the TPX-4, the system should not be operated with the top cover off. System fans pull air into the chassis, hence the TPX-4 must be closed to provide for proper airflow. Make sure that jumper-pins J1203 on the Bridge PCI card and J1602 on the TPX-4 Interface board have been configured for the same type of link (both copper or both optical). See Table 2-1 on page 2-2 and Table 2-2 on page 2-7 for details. Caution: Configure jumper-pins J1203 (Bridge PCI card) and J1602 (TPX-4 Interface board) for the same type of link, either copper or optical. After the InfiniBand Bridge PCI card has been installed in the host computer, the TPX-4 must be turned on and connected to the Bridge PCI card through either the copper or the fiber-optic link, otherwise the host computer may or may not boot. Caution: Make sure the TPX-4 is turned on and connected to the Bridge PCI card through either the copper or the fiber-optic link before turning the host computer on Turning the System On 1. Plug the AC power cord (shipped with the unit) into the AC socket on the rear of the TPX-4 (see Figure 2-14 on page 2-15). Caution: It is important that the TPX-4 be turned on before the host computer (the Themis T-210 server, for example) so that it is recognized by the host during its boot process. 2. Push the power supply on/off switch to the ON ( ) position. If power is present, the AC power supply LED (rear panel) and the power-on LED (front panel; see Figure 2-15, page 2-15) will both light green. 2-14

Make sure that the InfiniBand communications link either fiber-optic or copper wire is connected between the TPX-4 and the host system (see Section 2.1, InfiniBand Bridge PCI Card Installation, on page 2-1). 4. Turn on the host computer and watch the two LED indicators on the TPX-4 front panel above the attached InfiniBand connector (the fiber-optic connector has 2 LEDs above it, and the copper-wire connector 2 LEDs above it): If the left LED turns green, the link is fully operational If the right LED turns orange, a link has been established Turning the System Off Figure Power Supply on Rear of System 1. To turn the TPX-4 off, push the power supply on/off switch (rear panel) to the OFF ( O ) position. This will shut down the system and turn off all LEDs. 2-15

It also provides a description of all LED indicators on the front panel of the system. All interface connectors are mounted on the front panel of the chassis (see Figure A-1 on page A-2).
