Installing Avaya P550 /P580/P880/P882 CHAPTER 1 Gigabit Ethernet Modules Overview This document describes the following processes: Gigabit-Speed Modules Compliance Information Software Requirements Power Requirements Installing the Modules Installing GBIC Connectors Installing the Cables Gigabit-Speed Modules 50 Series Modules 80 Series Modules This document describes installation and configuration of the following media modules: 2-Port, Full-Duplex 1000BASE-X module: 850 nm (SX) and 1310 nm (LX and SLX) - (Layer 2 and Layer 3) 4-Port, Full-Duplex 1000BASE-X module: 850 nm (SX) and 1310 nm (LX and SLX) - (Layer 2) 4-Port, Gigabit Interface Card (GBIC) based module: 850 nm (SX), 1310 nm (LX and SLX) and 1550 nm (ELX) (Layer 2 and Layer 3) 8-Port, Gigabit Interface Card (GBIC) based module: 850 nm (SX), 1310 nm (LX and SLX) and 1550 nm (ELX) (Layer 2 and Layer 3) October
Compliance Information FCC Compliance Please read the following compliance information prior to installing your Avaya Gigabit Ethernet Module. This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause harmful interference 2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. This Class A digital apparatus meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Regulations. Cet apparell numérique de la classe A respecte toutes les exigences du Régelment sur le matériel brouilleur du Canada. WARNING This is a class A product. In a domestic environment, this product may cause radio interference, in which case you may be required to take adequate measures. Laser Safety Information * Note: This notice applies to devices that contain optical transceiver media modules installed. The transceivers used in this product are Class 1 Laser Products. This product complies with 21 CFR Chapter 1, Subchapter J. Any use other than that specified herein may result in hazardous laser radiation exposure. Unterminated optical receptacles may emit laser radiation. Do not view with optical instruments. This product complies with IEC , Safety of Laser Products, Class 1 Laser Product. 2 October
Software Requirements Power Requirements The Avaya P550R/P580/P880/P Series modules require software of Version 5.0 or higher. In the P550 chassis, each power supply powers approximately four media modules. In the P880 chassis, each power supply powers approximately nine media modules. It takes two power supplies to power a full chassis. Using three power supplies ensures that the system has redundant power capabilities. Use Tables 1 and 2 for the precise power values: Table 1. Power Values for System Devices - 50-Series Modules Device 2-Port Gigabit Module 4-Port Gigabit Module Power Used 35 W 55 W Table 2. Power Values for System Devices - 80-Series Modules Device 4-Port Gigabit Module 8-Port Gigabit Module Power Used 45 W 75 W Select Power System from the System > Configuration > group on the web agent window to determine how much power is currently available in your switch October
Installing the Modules * Note: All Avaya media modules are hot swappable. You do not need to shut down the switch when adding modules. To install modules in the chassis: 1. Carefully remove the module from its box, leaving the module in its anti-static wrapping. 2. Take appropriate antistatic precautions and carefully remove the module from the antistatic wrap (refer to Chapter 1, Installation in the Avaya P550/P580/P880/P882 Multiservice Switch Installation Guide for detailed information on proper antistatic precautions). 3. Open the Ejector Tabs until the stops make contact with the face plate (Figure 1). Figure 1. Installing the Module 4. Insert the module into the chassis (Figure 1). 5. Press on the center of the module as you push it into the chassis. The ejectors snap into place. 6. Push the ejectors into the closed position to complete seating the module (Figure 2). 4 October
Figure 2. Closing the Ejector Tabs 7. Tighten the captive screws. As the module powers up, the LEDs should function as described in the module descriptions provided in the Avaya P550/P580/P880/P882 User Guide. In general, the following is observed on a properlyfunctioning module (Table 3 ): Table 3. Power-up LED Function Module LED Normal Behavior All Modules Module Status Solid green, indicating normal operation. Gigabit Modules TX and RX Port HD/FD Solid green, flashing yellow intermittently to indicate traffic Solid green, indicating link integrity. Solid green, indicating full-duplex operation October
Installing GBIC Connectors GBIC connectors are only applicable to 80-Series modules. They come in the following types: SX (550m-capable) LX (10km-capable) SLX (25km-capable) ELX (70-100km-capable) Refer to Table 4 and Table for distances and wave lengths. * Note: All Avaya GBIC connectors are hot swappable. You do not need to shut down the switch when adding modules. To install a GBIC connector into a module: 1. Carefully remove the GBIC connector from its packaging, leaving the module in its anti-static wrapping. 2. Take appropriate antistatic precautions and carefully remove it from the antistatic wrap. (Refer to the Avaya P550/P580/P880/ P882 Multiservice Switch User Guide for more information on proper antistatic precautions). 3. Carefully slide the GBIC connector into the module until the side connectors click into place (Figure 3). 6 October
