Principle The CHAMPION Models 405 / in 1 door protection devices are a combination of the SP series Infra red light curtain and a mechanical safety edge. The mechanical safety edge aluminium profile is manufactured to the same dimensions and is provided with the same mounting holes as the original manufactures specification, this enables simple installation for new build on to the existing mechanical mountings & levers and provides backwards compatibility for retrofitting on modernisation installations. There are two models : the M beam unit and the M beam unit, the infra red beams from these units are transmitted across the elevator entrance to provide a dense protective curtain of infra red light In the unlikely event of the light curtain failing or becoming permanently obstructed due to vandalism or misuse the mechanical edge will continue to provide door protection until the light curtain malfunctions are rectified. Typical arrangement of Model 405 / 415 Series 2 in 1 Mechanical Safety Edge & Infra red light Curtain Fig. 1: Model 405 / 415 Series Using customer specific aluminum extruded mechanical edge. 4
M- Series The Models 405 / 415 Infra-Red light curtains consist of a Power Supply, a Receiver unit and a Transmitter unit (see Fig. 1). The mechanical safety edge containing the integrated infra-red transmitter and receiver units are mounted on the car doors opposite each other in the normal manner for these devices. For side-opening installations the SP unit is mounted to the slamming post / strike jam (see Fig 2). The transmitter unit (TX) contains the infrared emitters and their control circuitry whilst the receiver unit (RX) contains the infrared receivers and the main control circuitry. The receiver communicates with the transmitter by means of the top Infrared beam, eliminating the need for special cables between the units. Each transmitter / receiver combination is selected by a microprocessor in the receiver unit. The microprocessor determines if the infrared light beam between the selected transmitter and receiver has been obstructed and activates the output relay and warning circuit in the Power Supply. For trouble free installation the system is factory pre-wired and fully tested. A plug -in wiring kit and the necessary mounting hardware ensures a trouble free and simple installation. Fig. 2 Side & Centre Opening layouts 5
Installation NOTE: The 405 / 415 mechanical edge aluminium safety shoe profile is manufactured to the same dimensions and is provided with the same mounting holes as the original manufactures specification, these are backwardly compatible with the OEM s retractable mechanism and fixings for modernisation and new build installations without modification please refer to the lift / elevator OEM manual for the correct installation of the mechanical safety edges, the 405 / 415 can be installed on side or centre opening applications. INSTALLATION OF THE 405 / 415 ON CENTRE OPENING DOORS Please refer to your elevator installation manual and follow the manufacturer s instructions for installation of mechanical safety edges. (See Fig. 3). Fig. 3 Centre opening Doors PLEASE NOTE On some types of centre opening installations (ie: Otis, Hitachi) only one of the mechanical edges retracts when the doors are closed, when configured for these types of installations the transmitter (TX) SP light curtain module inside the mechanical edge is offset to achieve the required displacement and must not retract. Therefore for correct operation please ensure when Installing the units on the car doors that the Receiver (RX) is the unit that retracts. 6
INSTALLATION OF MODELS 405 / 415 ON SIDE-OPENING DOORS WITH SP TRANSMITTER Please refer to your elevator installation manual and follow the manufacturer s instruction for installation of mechanical safety edges. For installation of SP Transmitter (See Figs. 4 & 5). FIG. 4 Side-Opening Doors 7
The SP Transmitter unit is mounted onto the slamming post after the Receiver mechanical safety edge has been mounted on to car the door. To ensure correct operation check the SP TX Unit and the RX Unit (mechanical edge) are lined up correctly with each other and that the SP unit is mounted at the correct height with a 5mm offset to the mechanical edge when it is not retracted. see (Fig. 4 & 5) On side opening installations the SP TX (Transmitter) unit is mounted to the slamming post by means of spring steel mounting clips (see Fig 5) Screw fix the SP Transmitter unit to the slamming post / doors by means of the special mounting clips provided, To prevent vertical displacement ensure the locating tab on the top end cap fits into the slot in the mounting clips.(see Fig.5) MOUNTING OF SP UNIT TO SLAMMING POST ON SIDE-OPENING DOORS To prevent vertical displacement ensure the locating tab on the top end cap fits into the slot in the mounting clip Fix SP Transmitter unit to slamming post with spring clips in 4 places Install the SP unit at the correct height with a 5mm offset to the mechanical edge when it is not retracted see Fig 4 Fig. 5 SP MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT 8
MOUNTING THE POWER SUPPLY MS721 There is no specific location where the power supply unit should be mounted but it is normally mounted on the top of the lift / elevator car. Fig. 6 CABLE STRAIN RELIEF & EARTHING DETAILS Secure the cables to the units with the cable ties with the self-tapping screws supplied to avoid strain on the connector. Connect the earth wires to car door panels under the cable tie with self tapping screws Fig. 6A CABLE STRAIN RELIEF & EARTHING 9
CABLE MANAGEMENT Secure the cables to the units with the cable ties and self-tapping screws supplied to avoid strain on the terminals in the connector. (see Fig. 6A) Note: In some cases, connectors may not be fitted as per 6A as the cable will be supplied with flying leads. In either case, securing of cable is essential to avoid cable strain and mechanical damage. Mounting hardware has been supplied in the Hardware Kit for securing cables. TERMINATION OF FLYING LEADS When cable is fitted with the flying lead it will be terminated as per the following table: RX/TX TX RX TX 5 wire 4 wire Shielded 2 wire +V Red Red Violet Black COM Black Black Black/Shield RL1 Blue Blue Blue RL2 Yellow Yellow Brown E Green Fig. 6B FLYING LEAD CONNECTION SUMMARY 10
POWER SUPPLY MS721 AND EARTH CONNECTION Particular attention should be paid to correct earthing / grounding of the power supply. (see Fig. 7A) Check the power supply you have been supplied has been set correctly for the Supply Voltage (i.e. 110 V model or 240 V model) (See Fig. 8A.) Observe the following colour code : PH (Phase = BROWN), N (Neutral = BLUE), E (Earth = GREEN) Connect the 2 in 1 interface to the door controller re-open circuit by using terminals M6 - A & B for 2 in 1 units. For unit only ( not 2in1 ) connect to terminals M5 - N/C or N/O. (see Figs. 7 & 8) Fig. 7 POWER SUPPLY CONNECTIONS MS721 Fig. 7a POWER SUPPLY CABLE EARTH CONNECTIONS 11
