3 Introduction to this guide Thank you for choosing the Philips CertaFlux PLM II Gen1. In this guide you will find the information you need to design this system into a luminaire. This edition describes the performance, technical details of CertaFlux PLM II Gen1. Extensions to the range will be included in future updates of this guide. We advise you to consult our websites for the latest up-to-date information. 4 Introduction to the Certaflux PLM II Gen1 Applications The Philips CertaFlux PLM II Gen1 has been developed primarily for outdoor applications. Figure 1. 10 N.B. Component and process tolerances can result in imperfectly symmetrical light distributions. Maximum acceptable tolerances will have minimal impact on optical distributions and optical performance in the final application for a variety of reasons (e.g. light from neighboring poles, flux differences < 20% not visible for the human eye). All polar intensity diagram illustrations are just an indication of the beam shape. We suggest making use of the IES files available on the CertaFlux PLM II module website. Recommendations for SON-T replacements The recommendations are made by means of Dialux simulations for specific road examples as mentioned in tables x,x x. The road width (w), pole height (H), pole distance (P), tilt angle (T) and overhang (O) are specified per application. Figure 10: Specified installation parameters For road properties the following settings have been used for all three applications; Road type: Asphalt pavement ; Reflection table: CIE R3; Q0 of table: 0.07; SON-T 150W replacement solution We propose to replace a 150W SON-T conventional luminaire with a system of 3 x PLM 3000lm and 1 Xitanium 150W IP67 driver. The recommended system can meet the requirement of standard for lighting design of urban road in China. 11 SON-T 250W replacement solution We propose to replace a 250W SON-T conventional luminaire with a system of 5 x PLM 3000lm and 1 Xitanium 150W IP67 driver. The recommended system can meet the requirement of standard for lighting design of urban road in China. 14 Important recommendations and warnings The following recommendations and warnings should be taken into account when designing PLM II in a luminaire. Installation instructions Please refer to section xxx for module and driver wiring and proper module placement in a luminaire. CertaFlux PLM II is a product with integrated heatsink. The heatsink can warrantee the lifetime performance of the product if certain precautions are taken into account in luminaire design. Refer to section Thermal Management CertaFlux PLM II is a product with integrated optics. No additional secondary optics are needed. CertaFlux PLM II is an IP66 rated module. Recommended Xitanium LED drivers are IP67. For IP66 applications no additional efforts are needed. Min module mounting pitch is 5mm. IMPORTANT USAGE NOTES (approval from Alex) Tcase,max must not exceed 75 C for Ta 30 o C ΔT (Tambient -Tcase) must not exceed 45 C Failure to comply with usage conditions will void product warranty Design-in phase It is recommended to use the approved Philips Xitanium LED drivers. For a list of approved drivers please see Tables 2. If drive PLM II with other drivers not in table 2, please contact your local Philips sales representative for additional confirmation. Safety and IEC/CQC recommendations: the general IEC/CQC recommendations for luminaire design and national safety regulations (ENEC, CE, CB, etc.) also apply to selected PLM II modules and Xitanium LED drivers. Luminaire manufacturers are advised to conform to the international standards for luminaire design (IEC Luminaires). Do not apply mains power directly to the LED module. 12

15 Do not use damaged or defective modules. Do not drop the LED module or let any object fall onto it as this may damage the module. Do not use the LED module if it has been dropped or an object has fallen onto it and there are visible defects or damage. Installation and service phase of luminaires The luminaire should not be serviced while the mains voltage is connected; this includes connecting or disconnecting the PLM II module cable. Hot switching is not allowed. The following recommendations and warnings should be taken into account when using PLM II modules and Xitanium LED drivers. 13

16 Installation instructions Warning! The CertaFlux PLM II should always be replaced by an OEM-qualified installer. Special attention should be paid to the following points: Do not service the system when the mains voltage is connected; this includes connecting or disconnecting the cable The water proof connector has to be fully tightened up to prevent the water penetration via the connection in the field application. Mechanical fixation The separate components (driver and module/s) of the PLM II system can be fixed in place securely using the mounting holes located on the module(s) and driver. Please refer to the dimensional drawings for specific details. The 3D CAD files can be downloaded from the Philips Technology website at Figure 19. Screw To fix the system in place we recommend using an M4 hexagonal socket-head cap screw with an M4 spring-lock washer for screws with cylindrical heads. In a system with multiple modules, it is recommended that the modules are mounted with min distance of 5 mm. 14

17 Notes: 1. means the input connector of cable; no. 1-5 is the output connector of cable. 2. Each output connector can be connected or not. But an end cap must be in place when you leave any connector open. As the internal connection of these connectors are in series, which means if any one of them is open, there will be no output. Wiring A Xitanium 150w outdoor driver can support up to 3~5 CertaFlux PLM II modules in series and a Xitanium 75W outdoor driver can support 2 CertaFlux PLM II modules in series. The below is the connections we recommend. Philips SPD + Xitanium 150W/75W outdoor driver + CertaFlux PLM II modules 3. For easy installation, we strongly suggest you to leave the first or last one connector open (with an end cap) when not all of the connectors are necessary. 4. SPD is used to strength the surge handling capability of your luminaire; it is an optional device here. Figure 20. Wiring Philips SPD+ Xitanium 150W/75W outdoor driver+ CertaFlux PLM II 1-n connector fixation PLM II modules can be connected using the cable interface as specified below. This cable allows connection with fixed and dimmable single output drivers and serial connection from 1 and up to 5 modules. To secure the long term reliability of the module and application, below instructions have to be followed strictly. Figure n cable Putting too much stress on the cables or bending the cables with too much angle can cause seals to leak. The diameter of the bending circle should not exceed 25mm. The water proof connector has to be fully tightened to prevent the water leaking into the connection in the filed application. A bulge structure on the connector as the position indicator. Intense exposure of connectors, cables and 1-n multi-connectors to sunlight (UV) will make the seals brittle over time causing water leaks. It s recommended to cover the electrical connections to avoid this risk, also to avoid cables being damaged by wildlife. Cannot be used in a marine environment without additional protection against salt 15

18 Module placement in a luminaire Please follow remark on PLM II module as below picture for installing the module to right direction, this is critical to get the correct light distribution. Figure 22. Please install the module as arrow to road side direction Fixation of the driver The Xitanium driver has fixation holes at the short ends of the casing. The driver should be mounted securely on a flat part of the luminaire, using the mounting hole on each side of the driver. Please refer to the specific Xitanium LED driver product datasheet and design-in guide for individual product dimensions and installation instructions. Surge Protection in a CertaFlux PLM II system CertaFlux PLM II has a high level of integrated protection against the adverse effects of external surges and electro-static discharges. For optimum system protection, apply external common-mode and differential-mode surge protection at luminaire level in order to mitigate the harmful effects of surges on the LED driver and the CertaFlux PLM II. More details on surge protection can be found in the Application Design-In Guide for the Philips 277V SPD Surge Protection Device. 16

19 Thermal management The critical thermal management points for the module and driver are set out in this chapter in order to facilitate the design-in of the PLM II module. Keeping these thermal points in mind will help to ensure the optimal performance and lifetime of the system. Thermal specifications The main thermal specification that needs to be taken into account when designing in the PLM II module is the Tcase temperature. The Tcase must never exceed Tcase,max tested in a draft-free lab environment at 30 C, with final driver and within the luminaire fixture. Table 6. 20 Module temperature To achieve typical product lifetime characteristics, it is crucial to ensure that the product is operating within the specified temperature limits. These limits are determined not only by the product and the application, but also by the luminaire design and ambient environment. Warning! PLM modules in combination with Xitanium Fixed Output drivers don t have temperature protection settings (NTC) to detect overheating and extreme lifetime degradation of the LEDs when operated outside the maximum permitted environmental conditions. Such conditions can be caused by extreme ambient conditions or inadequate heat management design. Optimum performance will only be achieved if the Tcase stays below 75 C at 30 C average ambient temperature, measured according to the procedure described above. Thermal measurements The maximum ambient temperature at which the luminaire will operate constitutes the initial key criterion for defining the correct temperature limit and validating the thermal luminaire design. If the maximum ambient temperature (Tamb,max) is 30 C or lower, the luminaire design needs to ensure that the module temperature does not exceed 75 C when tested in a lab environment at 30 C ambient. Note: The ambient temperatures given above are average temperatures during the operational period of the module. Critical temperature point (Tcase) For LEDs, the junction temperature is the critical factor for operation. Since there is a direct relation between the case temperature and the LED junction temperature, it is sufficient to measure the aluminum casing of the PLM board at its critical temperature point, see Figure 23. If the case temperature at the Tcase point exceeds the recommended Tcase life, this will have an adverse effect on the performance of the LEDs and the PLM module in terms of light output, lifetime and lumen maintenance. 18

21 Measurement of critical temperature point On the back of the module there is a Tcase (Tc) point, which should be used for all temperature measurements. The maximum temperature of the module should be measured at a point in the center of the bottom of the LED board, see Figure 23. The temperature must be stable before any reliable data can be obtained (depending on the size and material of the luminaire, this will take between 30 and 180 minutes). Figure 23. Tc point N.B. It is important that the Tcase point is free of thermal interface material when the thermocouple is connected so that temperature measurements can be taken. It is essential to have a stable connection between the thermocouple and the module. Any shifting of the thermocouple will result in measurement errors and poor measurement repeatability. The Tcase should be measured at its critical temperature point using a thermocouple on the base of the LED module. N.B. In order to ensure accurate Tcase test results, the case temperature should not vary by more than 1 C for a period of at least 30 minutes. 19

22 Recommendations for module clusters in luminaire fixture design CertaFlux PLM II modules are designed for IP66 applications. Clustering of max number of 5 modules is an option. The min distance between the modules is 5mm as specified in CSA standard. A reference luminaire with 4 PLM modules is shown in figure 15. Clusters of PLM modules in closed luminaires will affect the temperatures and the lifetime performance. Thermal performance should be tested in luminaire fixture with maximum number of modules in wind free environment of Ta 30 C. Enclosed environments of clusters with module distance < 5mm will deviate from lifetime spec. Figure 27. However, thermal perfomance of the modules and therefore lifetime performance can be influenced by the three following factors: the number of modules designed in the luminaire, the moutning distance between the modules and the design of the top cover. Figure 27 shows an example of open slots designed on the top cover of a reference luminaire to faciliate heat management. Figures 28 and 29 depict two examples of reference luminaires with slots 1mm and 5mm high respectively designed on the top cover of the luminaire. The modules are designed-in with 5mm distance. Expected temperature rise by means of thermal simulations is estimated to 10 o C for 1mm high open slot and to 5 o C for 5mm high open slot. Therefore it is highly recommended that thermal performance should be tested in luminaire fixture with maximum number of modules in wind free environment of Ta 30 o C. 20

It is important to ensure good thermal and electrical contact between the driver and the luminaire as this enables the heat to dissipate efficiently and allows the driver to deliver optimal electrical performance. The driver temperature can be measured with a thermocouple at the Tcase point, shown on the driver label. Please refer to individual product datasheets for Tcase max information. 21

24 Quality Compliance and approval marks The Philips CertaFlux PLM II system is CQC, CB/CE and ENEC approved and complies with the applicable EU directives. To ensure approval of the luminaire, the conditions of acceptance need to be fulfilled. Module-related data can be found in GB24819 and IEC All luminaire manufacturers are advised to conform to the international standards of luminaire design GB and IEC Sustainability CertaFlux PLM II system is compliant with European Directive 2011/65/EU, recasting 2002/95/EC on Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS). The modules comply with Reach, as defined by the EU Chemical Agency. Warranty The warranty on CertaFlux PLM II module performance only applies if the product is used in combination with approved Philips Xitanium LED drivers (Tables 2 to 7). IP rating CertaFlux PLM II system is independent systems and has IP66 classification. They are designed for operation in the open air. The OEM is responsible for proper IP classification and approbation of the luminaire. Photobiological safety The photobiological safety standard IEC (Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems) gives guidance on the evaluation of the photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems, including luminaires. This standard specifies the exposure limits, reference measurement technique and classification scheme. It should be used for the evaluation and control of photobiological hazards from all electrically powered, incoherent broadband sources of optical radiation, including LEDs, in the wavelength range from 200 to 800 nm. 22

To maintain good EMC performance at the luminaire level, the input, output and control wires should be kept as far apart as possible. Addition of ferrite beads in series with the wires, or coupling the wires through ferrite cores within the luminaire may improve the overall EMC performance. However, selection of the type and characteristics of the additional filter depends on what frequency components have to be damped and by how much. In general, LED modules have no effect on the EMC of a luminaire. The PLM II Gen1 was tested with a Xitanium driver in a reference luminaire and no EMC issues were observed. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) Introduction to ESD It is generally recognized that Electro Static Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components, like LED chips, resulting in early failures. Professional users of electronic components are used to implementing extensive and rigorous measures to prevent ESD damage in their finished products. With the introduction of LED components for lighting, a new breed of users, such as OEMs and installers, are now involved in handling and using electronic LED components in the manufacturing process. 23

26 ESD in the production environment Depending on the immunity level of the LED board, there is a minimum set of measures that have to be implemented when handling LED boards. ESD measures are required in a production environment where handling can exceed the ESD immunity level. Furthermore, products that are susceptible to ESD must be packed and delivered in ESD-safe packaging. The purpose of an effective ESD-control strategy is to reduce line failures, final inspection failures and field failures. ESD specifications Philips designed PLM II Gen1 products to be robust when exposed to ESD. The maximum permitted contact discharge level and air discharge level, according to IEC , is 4 kv contact and 8 kv air. Servicing and installing luminaires It is highly recommended that installers are instructed not to touch the LED components and to use earthed arm straps to prevent ESD damage during installation and maintenance. 27 System disposal We recommend that the PLM II Gen1 and its components are disposed of in an appropriate way at the end of their (economic) lifetime.
