4 Upgrading the SG-S to the SG-S To install an upgrade kit for the ProxySG SG-S400 Series appliance, follow the tasks listed below for your upgrade kit. Please note, a qualified technician must perform the following tasks in order to reduce the risk of damage to your appliance. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. Follow the steps below to install the components of the upgrade kit. 1. Verify the contents of the upgrade kit. 2. Gather the required tools for installation. 3. Prepare the appliance for upgrade kit installation. Archive the configuration and keyring that are running on the old appliance and record your network configuration settings. 4. Power down the appliance. 5. Install three additional HDDs into empty drive bay 4, 5, and Open the center cover. 7. Remove the rear cover. 8. Remove the airduct. 9. Replace the existing memory modules with those included with the kit. 10. Replace the CPU and heatsink unit. 11. Reinstall the front airduct. 12. Reinstall the rear cover. 13. Close the center cover. 14. Finish the upgrade process. (Connect the cables, power on, install license). 15. Verify the new hardware configuration. 16. Troubleshooting Be sure to recycle your old and unused hardware through the Symantec Recycling Service. For more information, go to 4

5 Review Kit Contents The contents of the SG-S to -30 upgrade kits are shown below. Please verify the contents of the upgrade kit before continuing with the installation. If any items are missing, please contact your Symantec Support contact for assistance. 6 Required Installation Tools To install the S400 upgrade kit, Symantec recommends the following tools and items. 7 Prepare the Appliance for Upgrade Kit Installation Before performing any hardware upgrades, archive the configuration and keyring that are running on the old appliance and record your network configuration settings. This should be done periodically as part of general system maintenance procedures. IMPORTANT: Keys are exported in clear text with no encryption or obfuscation. Take precautions to secure the archive file appropriately. The archive does not include keyrings saved with the Do not show keypair option. For keyrings that are not included in the archive, you must manually create a new keyring and import the key and the certificate into the new ProxySG appliance before you are instructed to restore this archive. Create a back up of your SGOS configuration using SSH-Console session. The archive generated in this procedure includes the showable keyrings on the appliance. 1. In your terminal emulation application, enable session logging. Configure the application to log the session output and save that file on your local system. The following example uses PuTTY: 2. Access the CLI on the appliance and enter the following commands from the CLI command prompt: SGOS> enable SGOS# config terminal SGOS(config) show configuration noprompts with-keyrings SGOS(config) exit 3. Exit the terminal emulation application, making sure that session logging is turned off. 4. Open the session log/output file and delete all the text/commands before and after the configuration. 5. Save this text file on your local system or hard drive. 6. Record your network settings (Management interface IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, primary DNS server, alternate DNS server). 7

8 Power Down the Appliance The appliance must be powered down when installing the upgrade kit. Follow the steps below to properly power down the appliance. 1. Review the safety warnings before proceeding. See "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page To ensure that disk activity has ceased before removing power, issue the following CLI command in enable mode: # restart regular 3. Wait for the appliance to restart, and then unplug the power cord(s) from the AC power outlet(s). 4. Disconnect the power cord(s) from the power supply unit(s). 5. Be sure to properly ground the chassis before continuing with the installation. 8

9 Install Additional S400 Series Hard Disk Drives The S400 Series appliances are available in configurations with a maximum of 8 hard disk drives for SAS-based appliances and 2 for SATA-based appliances. Each HDD is equipped with a LED status indicator and are hot-swappable on certain Symantec appliances. SATA drives can only be removed and installed when power is disconnected from the appliance. Depending upon the model and configuration of the appliance, some drive bays might be populated with empty drive carriers. These carriers should not be removed when the appliance is in operation. For information on where to install hard disk drives, refer to the S400 Series HDD configuration table. 1. Pull the appliance out of the rack (or set the appliance over the workspace edge) several inches to provide room for the bezel. 2. Open the bezel to access the HDD quick release carriers. Be sure to support both sides when flipping over the bezel. 3. Properly orientate the new HDD carrier with the chassis HDD bay and slide into the appliance until it reaches the chassis stops and secure the drive by closing the latch until it clicks into place. Note: Do not insert the HDD carrier with the latch in the closed position! Instead, push the HDD carrier body to avoid damaging the carrier. 9

11 Open the S400 Series Center Cover The S400 Series center cover protects and houses the system fan units and provides further access to the appliance components. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. 1. Verify that the appliance has been gracefully shutdown and the power cords have been removed. 2. Pull the appliance out of the rack to provide ample room for system access. 3. Unlock the shipping latch by pulling towards the front of the appliance. 4. Pull the locking tabs on both sides of the chassis simultaneously towards the front and flip the cover over. Let the 11

12 cover rest on top of the front chassis cover. 12

13 Remove the S400 Series Rear Cover The S400 Series rear cover protects the primary system components. You must remove this panel to access the option cards as well as the SSD image storage devices. You cannot remove the rear cover without first opening the center cover. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. 1. Pull the appliance out of the rack to provide ample room for system access. 2. Open the appliance center cover. 3. Unlock the rear cover by lifting the latch. 4. Push the rear cover towards the rear of the appliance then lift to remove the cover. Set the rear cover aside at a safe location. 13

14 Remove the S400 Series Airduct The S400 Series is equipped with an airduct unit that directs airflow over critical system components and provides further access to the components.. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. Remove the rear airduct by using the finger grips and lifting straight up. 14

15 Replace the S400 Series Memory Modules When upgrading your S400 Series appliance, review the appliance memory configuration of the target specification and the DIMM slot usage for each memory module. DIMMs are grouped by channels and are marked on the motherboard (ex. slots A1, A2, B1, etc). Moreover, memory upgrades replace all existing memory in the appliance. Take care not to mix the upgrade memory and existing system memory modules! The memory configuration details are shown below: S400 Model SG- S Memory Slot Usage Memory DIMM slots: 16GB total memory: (8GB x 2) - A1, A2 Reference Image SG- S Memory DIMM slots: 24GB total memory: (8GB x 3) - A1, A2, B1 SG- S Memory DIMM slots: 32GB total memory: (8GB x 4) - A1, A2, B1, B2 Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. 16 Notes: Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. Memory upgrades replace all existing memory in the appliance. Take care not to mix the upgrade memory and existing system memory modules! Do not install any DIMMs which are not explicitly supported by the appliance. Installation and use of unauthorized DIMMs might damage the appliance and will invalidate your Symantec service contract! 1. Remove all of the existing memory (do not mix existing DIMMs with the included replacement DIMMs). Depress both of the locking latches per slot (a) to release the DIMM and remove it from the DIMM slot (b). Be sure to recycle your old and unused hardware through the Symantec Recycling Service. For more information, go to 2. Recommendation: Put on a thumb protector before installing the DIMMs. 3. To install the new memory, align the notch in the DIMM with the DIMM slot. Be aware that the memory module can only be installed in one direction. 4. Press each DIMM firmly into place until both locking latches snap into place. Do not force the memory module into 16

17 place. 5. Press firmly on each DIMM again to make sure each one is seated properly. 6. If your appliance does not boot up after installing the memory upgrade, please remove then reinstall all memory modules. 17

18 Symantec Upgrade Installation Guide Install an S400 Series Processor and Heatsink If you are upgrading your S400 Series appliance, review the appliance CPU configuration information on the appliance specifications page. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for damage resulting from ESD. Do not install any CPUs which are not explicitly supported by the appliance. Installation and use of unauthorized CPUs might damage the appliance and will invalidate your Symantec service contract! 1. Remove the existing heatsink by unscrewing 4 screws that secure it to the motherboard and lifting out of the appliance. 2. Release the processor load plate by pressing down and away on the processor plate release lever. Make sure the lever is pulled all the way back. The processor load plate is now unlocked. 18

19 3. Verify that the lever have been pulled back and then flip open the processor load plate to access the processor socket. 4. Remove the existing processor by holding it by the edges and lifting out of the appliance. 5. To install the processor: Important! Be sure to handle the processor by the flat edges! a. Align the gold triangle etched on the corner of the processor with the black triangle etched on the corner of the socket. b. Match the key posts on the socket with the processor key cutouts. c. Gently lower the processor into the socket. 19

20 6. To secure the processor: a. Close the processor load plate. b. Lower the processor plate lever arm. c. Lock the plate lever arm into place. 7. Remove the protective cover from the bottom of the new processor heatsink. 20

21 Symantec Upgrade Installation Guide The heatsink unit comes pre-applied with a thermal pad. Do not touch or apply additional thermal materials onto the heatsink! 8. Align the heatsink by orienting it with the airflow direction of the appliance and set into position. Minimize any movement of the heatsink after setting it in place. 9. Press down on the processor heatsink and secure by tightening the screws using an alternating pattern to distribute the load across the mounting surface. After the screws are in place, fully tighten the screws. Do not overtighten! Be sure to recycle your old and unused hardware through the Symantec Recycling Service. For more information, go to 21

22 Install the S400 Series Airduct The S400 Series is equipped with an airduct unit that directs airflow over critical system components and provides further access to the components. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work surface or ground the unit appropriately. Secure the airduct by closing the locking tab. 22

23 Reinstall the S400 Series Rear Cover The S400 Series rear cover protects the primary system components. Review the "Safety Warnings and Cautions" on page 31 before servicing your appliance. ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Reinstall the rear cover by sliding the panel towards the front of the appliance and then lock the rear cover latch. 23

24 Close the S400 Series Center Cover The S400 Series center cover protects and houses the system fan units and provides further access to the appliance components. 25 Finish the Upgrade Process The upgrade is almost complete! Finish the installation by reconnecting the cables and installing the upgrade license. 1. Reinstall the appliance cables as they were originally configured. 2. Make sure the appliance is powered on. 3. Upgrade your appliance in the licensing portal. a. Log in to the licensing portal: b. Select ProxySG > Upgrade. c. Enter the appliance serial number and click Next. 25

26 d. Accept the End User License Agreement. You should see a successfully complete message. 4. Install the new license keys: a. Log in to the ProxySG Management Console. b. Select Maintenance > Licensing > Install. c. Click Retrieve. The Request License Key dialog box opens. d. Enter your BlueTouch Online User ID and Password and then click Request license. e. Click OK to retrieve the license. 26

27 Verify the ProxySG Appliance Hardware Configuration Log in to your ProxySG appliance using a supported Web browser (see the SGOS Release Notes for a list of supported browsers): 1. Open a Web browser. 2. Disable the browser s pop-up blocker or configure it to allow pop-ups from the appliance s IP address. 3. Using a secure connection, enter any IP address assigned to the appliance, followed by the HTTPS console port number (8082 by default). For example: 4. Enter the user name and password you specified during configuration to access the appliance. 5. Select Statistics > Advanced. 6. Select Diagnostics. 7. Click Show information about the hardware installed. 27

28 8. Verify the information in Hardware Information matches the specifications of the upgraded appliance. 28

29 Troubleshooting Problem: Appliance fails to boot after installing an upgrade kit. The appliance powers on, but does not finish booting. Resolution: Verify that components have been correctly installed. Reseat all DIMMs by removing, then reinstalling into the appropriate DIMM slots. Verify all NICs and the PCIe module are properly seated. 29

31 Safety Warnings and Cautions This product is designed to work with power systems having a grounded neutral. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not plug this product into any other type of power system. Contact a qualified electrician if you are not sure what type of power is supplied to your building. Power and Electrical Warnings CAUTION The power button, indicated by the stand-by power marking, DOES NOT completely turn off the system AC power. 5V standby power is active whenever the system is plugged in. To remove power from system, you must unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. If your system uses more than one AC power cord, make sure all AC power cords are unplugged before you open the chassis, or add or remove any non hotplug components. The power supply in this product contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the power supply. Hazardous voltage,current, and energy levels are present inside the power supply. Return to manufacturer for servicing. To avoid risk of electric shock, turn off the appliance and disconnect the power cord, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems attached to the appliance before opening it. The power cord set included with the appliance meets the requirements for use in the country of purchase. Use the power cord that shipped with the appliance. If this appliance is to be used in another country, purchase an AC power cord set that is approved for use in that country (18 AWG recommended). The power cord must be rated for the product and for the voltage and current marked on the product's electrical ratings label. The voltage and current rating of the cord should be greater than the voltage and current rating marked on the product. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the wires must be a minimum of 1.00mmð or 18AWG or 18AWG, and the length of the cords must be between 1.8m (6 feet) and 3.6m (12 feet). System Access Warnings CAUTION To avoid personal injury or property damage, the following safety instructions apply whenever accessing the inside of the product: Turn off all peripheral devices connected to this product. Turn off the system by safety shutting down the appliance. Disconnect the AC power by unplugging all AC power cords from the system or wall outlet. Disconnect all cables and telecommunication lines that are connected to the system. Retain all screws or other fasteners when removing access cover(s). Upon completion of accessing inside the product, refasten access cover with original screws or fasteners. Do not access the inside of the power supply. There are no serviceable parts in the power supply. Return to manufacturer for servicing. Power down the server and disconnect all power cords before adding or replacing any non hot-plug component. 31

32 When replacing a hot-plug power supply, unplug the power cord to the power supply being replaced before removing the power supply from the server. CAUTION If the server has been running, any installed processor(s) and heat sink(s) may be hot. Unless you are adding or removing a hot-plug component, allow the system to cool before opening the covers. To avoid the possibility of coming into contact with hot component(s) during a hot-plug installation, be careful when removing or installing the hot-plug component(s). CAUTION To avoid injury do not contact moving fan blades. If your system is supplied with a guard over the fan, do not operate the system without the fan guard in place. Cooling and Airflow Warning Carefully route cables as directed to minimize airflow blockage and cooling problems. For proper cooling and airflow, operate the system only with the chassis covers installed. Operating the system without the covers in place can damage system parts. To install the covers: 1. Check first to make sure you have not left loose tools or parts inside the system. 2. Check that cables, add-in boards, and other components are properly installed. 3. Attach the covers to the chassis according to the product instructions. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Warning CAUTION ESD can damage disk drives, boards, and other parts. We recommend that you perform all procedures at an ESD workstation. If one is not available, provide some ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap attached to chassis ground- any unpainted metal surface -- on your server when handling parts. Always handle boards carefully. They can be extremely sensitive to ESD. Hold boards only by their edges. After removing a board from its protective wrapper or from the server, place the board component side up on a grounded, static free surface. Use a conductive foam pad if available but not the board wrapper. Do not slide board over any surface 32

38 Hard Disk Drive Status LEDs The Symantec S-series feature hard disk drive LEDs which indicate appliance HDD status. The HDD LED status is listed below. The drive bay identification numbers are located on the front top cover of the appliance. HDD Status LED Color Status Green Green: flashing Disk is populated / normal operation. I/O activity. Red: blinking (SAS HDD only) Non-RAID Disk is offline. Red: (SAS HDD only) Off RAID Disk is rebuilding. Disk LED returns to green when the rebuild is complete. Disk fault / failure. Disk not populated. Spare drives in RAID-based platforms will automatically be rebuilt as a replacement when a drive fails. 38

39 S400 Series Hard Drives Symantec's S400 series hard disk drives are hot-swappable from a hardware perspective, but not all appliances have software support for this feature.
