3 INTRODUCTION The following instructions describe the initial inspection, unpacking, setup, and general operation of the IDS Please read this entire installation manual before attempting to use the IDS UNPACKING & INSPECTION OF THE IDS-2100 Before making any connections to the IDS-2100, inspect the packing material. Make sure that the shipping container appear to be intact and no damage has occurred during shipping. Next, open each container and unwrap the IDS-2100 Imaging System, the PC and its monitor (if supplied). Inspect each component for damage that may have occurred during shipping. Any damage should be reported immediately to Talktronics, Inc. Make sure that you have received the following: 1) IDS-2100 Imaging System 2) MuTech MV-1500/4MB Digital Frame Grabber 3) MuTech MV-1500 Software and manual 4) Talktronics DTS Software 5) 50 pin female to female shielded flat ribbon cable, black 6) 50 pin male to male shielded flat ribbon cable, black 7) 9 pin female to 9 pin female shielded flat ribbon cable 8) 4 each BNC video cables 9) AC power cord 10) 9 pin female to 9 pin male RS232 serial cable 11) IDS-2100 Reference Manual 12) DTS4.0 Software Manual Installation Manual R1.04 CCD.doc 1

4 PACKAGING OF THE IDS 2100 FOR SHIPMENT If the IDS 2100 System needs to be shipped back to Talktronics or another location, please refer to the following packing instructions to ensure that the system and its components are not damaged during shipping. Note that the IDS 2100 System and its components have been shipped to you using similar packing techniques. Talktronics cannot be responsible for damage that occurs during shipping to the IDS 2100 as a result of poor packaging by the user. Put the IDS 2100 System in its own 24"L x 24"W x 20"H double-wall corrugated box. Build up the box as follows: 1. Put a 2" layer of padding or other suitable packing filler at the bottom of the box. 2. Place a 24" square cardboard piece on the layer of padding. 3. Put another layer of padding on top of the cardboard insert to complete the bottom layer of the box. 4. Place the IDS 2100 in a large plastic bag, add a dessicant to the bag and seal it with packing tape. 5. Set the IDS 2100 in the bottom of the box. 6. Construct a square frame out of 4 pieces of cardboard to surround the IDS 2100 inside the box. The 4 pieces will keep the IDS 2100 from moving around inside the box during shipping, and provide added strength to the box. 7. Add padding around the outside of the cardboard pieces to hold them in place. There should be a couple of inches of room on each side of the system for this step. 8. Put all cables in sealed plastic bags. 9. Add padding onto the IDS 2100 and place the cables and documentation on top of this layer. 10. Cover the cables and documentation with more padding. 11. Put another 24" square cardboard piece on top of the padding, followed by a final layer of padding. 12. Seal the box well with multiple pieces of packing tape for support. 5 PRECAUTIONS 1) WARNING: NEVER APPLY POWER TO CONTROLLER WITH A CCD/FPA SENSOR INSTALLED UNTIL ALL VOLTAGES AND SIGNALS HAVE BEEN VERIFIED AT THE DEVICE SOCKET. 2) NEVER REMOVE OR INSTALL CCD/FPA SENSOR IN SOCKET WITH POWER APPLIED. 3) ALWAYS WAIT A MINIMUM OF 3 MINUTES TO ALLOW DC SUPPLY VOLTAGES TO DISCHARGE BEFORE INSTALLING CCD/FPA SENSOR IN SOCKET, AND VERIFY THAT NO RESIDUAL VOLTAGES EXIST AT THE DEVICE SOCKET BEFORE INTALLING OR REMOVING DEVICE. 4) NEVER DISCONNECT POWER AND SIGNAL CABLES FROM CAMERA HEAD BOARD WITH POWER APPLIED. WAIT AT LEAST 3 MINUTES FOR ALL VOLTAGES TO DECAY TO MINIMAL LEVELS BEFORE DISCONNECTING CAMERA HEAD. 5) HANDLE CCD'S AND/OR FPA S ONLY WITH THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS FOR EXTREMELY STATIC-SENSITIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICES. ONLY GROUNDED WORKSTATIONS, GROUNDED EQUIPMENT AND PERSONNEL IN CONTROLLED ELECTROSTATIC CONDITIONS MAY COME IN CONTACT WITH THESE DEVICES. ION FLOW GENERATORS SHOULD BE USED TO FLOOD THE WORK AREA DURING ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLY, AND PERSONNEL GROUNDING STRAPS MUST BE WORN. THESE PRECAUTIONS ALSO APPLY ANY TIME THAT THE CAMERA HEAD IS DISASSEMBLED, OR OPENED FOR ANY REASON. 6) DO NOT LEAVE HEATER POWER APPLIED SUCH THAT THE CCD/FPA SENSOR IS HEATED ABOVE 50 DEGREES C. 7) OBSERVE ALL MANUFACTURER SPECIFIED PRECAUTIONS FOR THE HANDLING, STORAGE AND USE OF LN 2 AND DEWAR. 8) WARNING: THE CONTROLLER SYSTEM MAY BE OPERATED WITHOUT THE CAMERA HEAD CONNECTED. ALL CABLES TO THE CAMERA HEAD MUST BE DISCONNECTED IN THIS MODE OF OPERATION. 9) WHENEVER THE CAMERA HEAD IS CONNECTED: NEVER APPLY POWER TO SYSTEM WITHOUT ALL CABLES PROPERLY INSTALLED AT THE CAMERA HEAD AND CONTROLLER. ONLY THE BNC VIDEO CABLES MAY BE LEFT OPEN WHEN APPLYING POWER. NEVER CONNECT THE CLOCK/BIAS CABLES (JA/JB - J10/J9) WITHOUT THE PREAMP POWER CABLE (JF J12) ALSO CONNECTED. 6 HARDWARE INSTALLATION Initial Power Check POWER SWITCH VIDEO2 VIDEO4 AC POWER FUSE VIDEO1 VIDEO3 FAN I 0 SC 1 SC 2 AC LINE INITIAL POWER-UP SYSTEM CHECK: Rear Panel View 1) Unpack the IDS-2100 Imaging System and connect the AC power cable to the IDS AC LINE connector and plug into the AC mains with the POWER SWITCH in the OFF position. Verify that the line voltage setting is appropriate for the AC power source. Make no other connections at this time. 2) Apply power to the system and verify that status LED's are lit and that the LCD lights up on the IDS-2100 front panel. Refer to the Reference Manual for a description of these LED's and their interpretation. The system will perform a self-test, and display a test pattern with firmware revision information on the LCD. 3) Verify that the internal power supply FAN turns on and is running smoothly with no interference. Turn off power to the system before proceeding with installation. Wait for all LED's to be extinguished, and wait a few more minutes so that all power outputs are discharged before proceeding with installation. Installation Manual R1.04 CCD.doc 4

CAM. OUT FAN AC POWER I HEADBOARD ELECTRONICS (HBE) 1 JS - SERIAL JB CLOCKS & BIAS to J9 (opposite side) JF-PREAMP to J12 1) Make sure power is off. Connect the CLOCKS & BIAS connector JA (50 pin D female) to J10 (50 pin D female) on the Headboard Electronics (HBE). The 50 pin shielded connector cable with D male connectors at both ends is used. Press the connectors fully into their mating sockets on the rear of the IDS-2100 system and on the HBE. 2) Connect the CLOCKS & BIAS connector JB (50 pin D male) to J9 (50 pin D male) on the Headboard Electronics (HBE). The 50 pin shielded connector cable with D female connectors at both ends is used. Press the connectors fully into their mating sockets on the rear of the IDS-2100 system and on the HBE. 3) Connect the PREAMP power cable from JF (9-pin D male) on the IDS-2100 rear panel to J12 (9-pin D male) on the HBE. 8 4) Connect the BNC video cables from the headboard electronics to the Signal Chain Boards according to the chart below. Apply power to the system and verify that status LED's and the LCD are lit on the IDS-2100 front panel. Turn off power to the camera system before proceeding with PC installation. Wait for all Controller LED's to be extinguished, and wait a few more minutes so that all power outputs are discharged before proceeding with installation. Installation Manual R1.04 CCD.doc 6

9 OTHER REAR PANEL CONNECTIONS: J206 ENB IN J205 SYNC IN J206 ENB IN J205 SYNC IN JC I/O I 0 JS - SERIAL JS SERIAL JC I/O J206 ENB IN: Input connector for external synchronization enable signal. This is an LSTTL input which is optional. In the event that external system provides a level-type signal which conditions the SYNC pulse input, then this input may be used. Jumpers on the rear panel I/O Interface Board may be used to set the polarity, and a one-shot is available to stretch short pulses if needed. J205 SYNC IN: Input connector for external synchronization pulse signal. This is an LSTTL input for an externally generated pulse to synchronize the camera system integration period to an external event. Jumpers on the rear panel I/O Interface Board may be used to set the polarity, and a one-shot is available to stretch short pulses if needed. JC Input/Output: Optional use connector which provides output of the camera command bits (LSTTL), optically-isolated serial camera command signals, and optically-isolated serial camera data signals. Normally, the front panel controller drives the camera command signals, and the PC communicates with the front panel via the serial I/O port, and the serial camera command/data ports are not used. JS RS232C Serial Port: The Front Panel Controller controls the camera system directly via the serial camera command port. The PC communicates with the Front Panel Controller via an RS232C serial port configured for 9600 Baud, 8 data bits, no parity, one stop bit. Installation Manual R1.04 CCD.doc 7

10 PC INSTALLATION FOR THE IDS-2100 IMAGING SYSTEM Turn off power to the PC before proceeding with system installation. Wait a few minutes so that all power supply voltages are discharged. 1) Install the MuTech MV-1500 Frame Grabber in an PCI slot on the PC motherboard, per the manufacturer's instructions in the event that the board is not already installed by factory. 2) Connect the 68-pin Digital Camera Interface cable from the IDS-2100 rear panel (JE) to the MuTech Frame Grabber interface connector on the rear of the PC. OUT FAN AC POWER I 0 VIDEO MOTHERBOARD CONN.'S CARD JF - PREAMP JS - SERIAL JE DIGITAL CAMERA OUT TO MV-1500 FRAME GRABBER PC 3) Connect the SERIAL port on the rear panel of the IDS-2100 to COM 1 on the PC using the 9 pin female to 9 pin male RS232 serial cable (gray) provided. 4) Connect the AC power cable to the IDS-2100 if it has been disconnected and plug into the AC mains with the power switch in the OFF position. Apply power to the system and verify that status LED's and LCD are lit on the IDS-2100 front panel. 5) Select the MuTech MV-1500 icon from the applications in Windows to run the application. Should always be lit under normal circumstances. Will be disabled when the system is in idle mode waiting for the external synchronization pulse. 2) READ: Integrate/Read LED is lit when controller is in READ mode, indicating that data is being dumped from CCD/FPA sensor to host system. 3) F_GATE: Frame Gate status LED, indicates when a valid pixel data frame is being dumped to host system. Duration of frame is dictated by number of pixels in sensor and therefore a function of device timing. 4) OPEN: Open Shutter status LED, indicates when the OPEN command bit is active. 12 FRONT PANEL OVERVIEW (cont.) 5) SHUTTER: Shutter status LED, indicates activity on the shutter open/closed drive circuit. Normally would be opposite in polarity from OPEN command bit. 6) SYNC_ENB: External Synchronization Enable status LED, indicates when the controller has commanded the system to wait for external sync event. Dependent on controller mode. 7) OPT1 AND OPT2: Optional command bit status LED s. Two optional command bits may be generated by controller, in which case these LED s indicate their level. Lit when command bit level is low. Dependent on controller mode. 8) F_ERASE: Fast Erase status LED. A command bit which is used to generate continuous parallel clock cycles. Typically only used for CCD applications. Dependent on controller mode. 9) EXT_SYNC: External Sync status LED, indicates activity on the External Sync input connector. 10) EXT_ENB: External Enable status LED, indicates activity on the External Enable input connector.
