D Series Disk s Corporate Headquarters Storage Technology Corporation () One Drive Louisville, CO , U.S.A. Tel: Tel: Internet: Overview s D-Series Disk s are the company s midrange storage offering, which is sourced through a strategic alliance with LSI Logic Storage Systems. It is targeted primarily at access-centric environments. also offers its V-Series (Shared Virtual Array) product line for enterprise customers who require mainframe connectivity, as well as its B-Series (BladeStore models), which utilizes Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) disk drives for those customers in capacity-centric environments who require a more cost-conscious approach to storage and are willing to sacrifice some of the performance advantages of Fibre Channel to get it. The D-Series is currently made up of five products: the D280, D178, D240, D220 and D173 Disk s. All of the models offer full Fibre Channel connectivity from host to disk (though the D173 is 1Gb rather than 2Gb Fibre Channel) and are designed for use in open s environments. D280 Disk The D280 Disk is a full 2Gb Fibre Channel disk array targeted at open s environments for storage consolidation or online transaction processing (OLTP) purposes. With support for up to 224 disk drives, the D280 scales up to a maximum raw capacity of 32.7TB.The controller module itself holds no drives, however. Instead, up to 16 expansion cabinets can be attached to the D280 base unit, each supporting up to 14 disk drives to achieve the 224-drive maximum. The D280 comes standard with two redundant array of independent disks (RAID) disk controllers, each supporting 1GB of cache for a total of 2GB cache per. Positioned as it is at the high end of the D- Series line, the D280 supports all the fault-tolerance and high-availability features expected in this class of product: redundant components, battery backed-up mirrored cache, point-in-time copy, full physical copy, remote mirroring and more. (Full details are available in the Features and Functions chart below.) D178 Disk The D178, introduced in January 2002, is the second oldest product in the family. Like the D280, it has 2Gb Fibre Channel interfaces to both host and disk, and supports up to 224 disk drives or 32.7TB of raw capacity using 16 expansion cabinets. It comes with two RAID disk controllers standard, each supporting 1GB of cache. In fact, when you compare the specifications tracked in our Features and Functions chart below, the D178 appears to be identical to the D280. The difference lies primarily in the controller boards. The D280 uses faster processors, more nonvolatile static RAM (SRAM), and a 64-bit Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus (vs. the 32-bit PCI bus used on the D178). Therefore, the D178 Disk is intended for customers who don t require as high a level of performance as D280 5 November

D Series Disk s customers. The D178 is also the controller base for s BladeStore product today. Gartner expects this product to go end-of-life in the 3Q04 time frame. D240 Disk The D240 Disk is the newest addition to s D-Series line. It became generally available in September 2003 and offers a middle ground for potential D-Series customers. The D240 supports up to 112 disk drives for a maximum of 16.4TB of raw storage (14 in the base unit and up to 98 using seven expansion units). It comes standard with two RAID disk controllers, each with 1GB of cache for a total of 2GB of cache per. This 2Gb Fibre Channel array supports s point-in-time and full physical copy functionality, but does not currently support remote mirroring. expects to add remote mirroring support with its next version of SANtricity (9.0) in the 2Q04 time frame. D220 Disk The D220 is another recent addition to s D-Series line. Introduced in July 2003, it is intended for the entry-level segment and is targeted at departments and workgroups in open s environments. The D220 scales up to 6.1TB of raw capacity using 42 disk drives (14 in the base unit and 14 in each of two expansion units) and supports 2Gb Fibre Channel from host to disk. It comes standard with two RAID disk controllers, each with 128MB of cache; however, it does not support point-in-time copy, full physical copy or remote mirroring capabilities. does plan to add SnapShot copy to the D220, probably by year-end D173 Disk At the low end of the line is the D173 Disk line. Designed for entry-level as well as midrange environments, it supports up to 6.1TB of raw capacity using 42 disk drives (14 in the base unit and 14 in each of two expansion units). The D173 comes standard with one RAID controller with 128MB of cache, and supports a second one if the customer chooses to add it. Like the other D-Series models, the D173 offers Fibre Channel connectivity from host to disk. That connectivity operates at 1Gb/sec on this model, however. Unlike the D240 and D220 models, the D173 supports point-in-time copy. Remote mirroring, however, is not supported. The D173 is the oldest product in the family; it was introduced in November While is still actively marketing this product, Gartner expects it to be phased out in the 2Q04 time frame, with customers being guided toward the 2Gb Fibre Channel D220 platform instead. D-Series Disk Arrays Capacity is added to the D-Series Disk s using expansion modules that calls D- Series Disk Arrays. There are currently two models available the D and the Both support up to 14 drives per array (thus the -014 ), are 3U high, and support the mixture of different drive capacities and drive rotational speeds within a single disk array. The primary difference between the two models is the disk interface. The D200 Disk Array uses 2Gb Fibre Channel Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) connections. It is supported on all D-Series Disk s, but will only operate at 1Gb/sec on the D173 Disk. The is the older of the two models. It uses 1Gb/sec interface converter (GBIC) connections, making it practical only for the D173 Disk, which operates at 1Gb/sec end-to-end. The 9170 is also supported with s D178, but the 2Gb Fibre Channel D178 Disk will only operate at 1Gb/sec to disk when the 9170 Disk Arrays are used. 5 November

D Series Disk s Analysis Upgradability Upgrades between the different D-Series models are achieved by replacing the controller modules. According to, this can be done nondisruptively by replacing one controller at a time. However, that will still affect performance and availability as redundancy is temporarily lost. All of the D-Series models can use the same expansion modules that house the disk drives (though one model operates at 1Gb/sec and the other model operates at 2Gb/sec). These can therefore be reused in an upgrade situation providing some degree of investment protection. Storage Software All of the D-Series arrays support certain open s software that, like the hardware itself, is sourced from LSI Logic. The primary storage management tool is SANtricity Storage Manager, which ships standard with all the D-Series arrays. Also available for those models that support them, are data replication tools (SnapShot Copy, Remote Volume Mirror and Internal Volume Copy), a storage partitioning tool (SANshare Storage Partitioning), a virtualization and replication tool (MirrorStore) and a hierarchical storage management (HSM) tool (Application Storage Manager). SANtricity Storage Manager Storage management for the D-Series disk arrays is facilitated by SANtricity Storage Manager, which provides configuration, monitoring and notification, as well as management capabilities, including such activities as adding capacity, configuring changes, mapping volumes to the desired server, mixing drive capacities and mixing RAID levels. SANtricity also provides the ability to perform online storage management, dynamic volume expansion, dynamic capacity expansion, and dynamic drive configuration and migration. SANtricity Storage Manager ships standard with all models of the D-Series, though only the D280, D178 and D240 ship standard with the most recent version (v.8.4). The D220 ships with v.8.33 and the D173 ships with v.8.3. SANtricity is also supported on s BladeStore. Neither the D173 nor the D220 are upgradable to SANtricity Storage Manager v.8.4 as is. It is possible on the D220, but only by upgrading the unit itself to a D240. That means that the D173 and D220 do not support persistent group reservations (used by Oracle database users who require application availability during backups in a Veritas of Sun Cluster environment), and only support 1,024 volumes/partitions as opposed to 2,048 with v.8.4. Data Replication Tools offers a variety of data replication options on its D-Series product line, all of which are sourced from LSI Logic: SnapShot Copy Available as a chargeable option on the D280, D178, D240 and D173 ( expects to support it on the D220 by year-end 2003). SnapShot Copy is a Point-in-Time copy solution. It allows the storage administrator to make a nearly instantaneous copy of a volume without disruption and without requiring disk space equal to the size of the original volume. These copies can then be used for such things as backup or application testing. SnapShot Copy is also supported on s BladeStore product. Remote Volume Mirroring (RVM) RVM is s remote mirroring application, which allows volumes to be mirrored between D Series (or B Series) remote or local disk arrays in synchronous mode. It can be used for either sharing and distributing data locally, or as a remote mirror for backup 5 November

D Series Disk s and recovery purposes. expects to add asynchronous functionality in 2Q04 with the introduction of SANtricity v.9.0. This chargeable option is available on the D280 and D178 Disk s only (within the D-Series), but it is also supported on BladeStore. Internal Volume Copy This option allows the storage administrator to create a full physical copy of a volume. It is available on the D280, D178 and D40 Disk s, and it is a chargeable option. It is also supported on BladeStore. SANshare Storage Partitioning Software Storage partitioning is facilitated on the D-Series with SANshare Storage Partitioning Software. SANshare allows the storage administrator to partition the available disk storage in a SAN into up to 64 groups on the D280, D178, D240 and D173 (16 partitions maximum on the D220) to support multiple platform, heterogeneous environments or to separate access to data for controlled access. SANshare can also be used with BladeStore. Application Storage Manager (ASM) All of the D-Series arrays support ASM, s policy-driven storage management software that allows data to be managed automatically across the storage hierarchy (both tape and disk). ASM uses host-level virtualization to create a virtual capacity pool that can then be managed according to customerestablished policies. Competitors The D-Series competes with other midrange storage s from vendors including, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM and Sun. Each of the competing product families has multiple models that may or may not align directly against s D-Series line. The following chart shows the most logical competitive alignments, though some vendors competing products straddle s product breakdown from a total capacity perspective. 5 November

D Series Disk s Table 3: Competitive Alignment: D-Series vs. CLARiiON D280 D178 D240 D220 D173 CLARiiON CX600 CX600/CX400 CX400 CX400/CX200 CX200 The D-Series models compete against s midrange CLARiiON CX Series (also cobranded and sold by Dell). Looking at Fibre Channel capacities, the CLARiiON CX600 aligns competitively with the D280 and D178, while the CLARiiON CX400 and CX200 lag slightly behind the D240, D220 and D173. However, the CLARiiON CX Series also supports 250GB ATA disk drives, offering increased capacity for those customers that do not require the performance of Fibre Channel. This is something that also plans to add in the 2Q04 time frame when SANtricity v.9.0 is released. The CLARiiON CX600 is positioned at the high end of the line. It scales up to 35TB with Fibre Channel drives, making it a capacity match with D280 and D178. However, it scales up to 58TB when ATA drives are incorporated (the configuration requires the use of a minimum of five Fibre Channel drives along with the ATA drives), providing added flexibility for customers who wish to increase potential raw capacity. The high-end CLARiiON CX600 also offers twice as much cache as its nearest competitor. The CX400 scales up to 8.8TB using Fibre Channel drives and 13.5TB using a combination Fibre Channel and ATA drives, making it a competitor of both the D220 and the D240. The CX200 scales to 4.4TB with Fibre Channel drives, and up to 6TB using a mixture of Fibre Channel/ATA drives. This model is competitively aligned with the D173 because its two capacity points (Fibre Channel and ATA) surround the D173 s total raw capacity and because both s provide lower performance options (1Gb Fibre Channel on the D173 and ATA on the CX200). The CLARiiON models are the only storage s in the competitive line-up that do not support battery backed-up cache. Instead, they use supplemental power supplies to back up the full and destage data in write cache to disk in the event of a power failure. Table 4: Competitive Alignment: D-Series vs. HP EVA Hewlett-Packard D280 D178 D240 D220 D173 HP EVA EVA5000 EVA5000 EVA3000 MSA1000 MSA1000 Hewlett-Packard The D-Series competes against HP s Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) line, which consists of two models the EVA5000 and the EVA3000 and the HP Modular SAN Array (MSA) The EVA5000 (formerly called just EVA ) supports 2Gb Fibre Channel from host to disk and scales up to 35TB. The EVA3000, introduced in April 2003, also supports 2Gb Fibre Channel end-to-end, and scales up to 8.2TB. Because the two models use different controllers, they have different numbers of front-end ports and different aggregate data transfer rates. The EVAs distinguishing features include storage -level virtualization and what HP calls Virtualized RAID Sets (Vraid), which they use instead of traditional RAID levels, and virtual hot sparing: Storage -level virtualization Achieved by mapping the data blocks within the individual application logical unit numbers (LUNs) across a pool of physical disks. This allows the EVAs to 5 November

D Series Disk s allocate or reallocate dynamically between hosts and application LUNs of any virtualized RAID set type, assuming the operating and application do not require operator intervention. s D-Series arrays handle any hot spot problems by allowing users to reconfigure the back end of the arrays between RAID levels on the fly, without disruption. Vraid The EVAs emulate RAID levels 0, 1/0 and 5, but do so in the context of the virtualization pool. Storage pools are divided into disk groups (pools), which can range anywhere from eight to 240 physical disks. The storage administrator can then select the amount of capacity to dedicate to each level of redundancy. No redundancy (Vraid 0) corresponds to the traditional RAID level 0. High redundancy (Vraid 1 or Vraid 1/0) corresponds to the traditional RAID level 1/0. Medium redundancy (Vraid 5) corresponds to the traditional RAID level 5. Once the selection is made, the management software determines the best way to set up the Vraid virtual disks and then data is striped evenly across all available capacity in the virtual disk group. Virtual Hot Sparing Hot sparing is implemented on the EVAs as distributed or virtual sparing. Rather than setting aside a specific physical disk drive to act as a spare in case of a drive failure, capacity equal to the size of one physical drive is drawn from the total storage pool to create a virtual hot spare. The MSA1000 scales up to 6.1TB using 42 disk drives, supports either one or two RAID disk controllers, and supports a maximum of 512MB of cache per. The primary area where the models surpass the HP MSA1000 is in disk connectivity. The D220 and D173 connect to disk via a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) interface, while the MSA100 uses Ultra3, Ultra2 or Ultra 320 Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI). Table 5: Competitive Alignment: D-Series vs. HDS Thunder Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) D280 D178 D240 D220 D173 HDS Thunder 9570V 9570V No Direct Match No Direct Match No Direct Match Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) HDS s midrange RAID array offering is the Freedom Storage Thunder family, which is composed of four models. However, only the Thunder 9570V aligns competitively against the D-Series products. The other Thunder models (the 9530V s) offer limited scalability (under 1TB) and are targeted for distributed storage environments, particularly in retail operations and professional organizations. The Thunder 9570V, which scales up to 32.7TB using 224 drives, is targeted at the high end of the midrange enterprise market and is specifically designed for use in data-intensive industries (that is, broadcast/rich media applications, data warehousing or data mining) or for use in implementing storage consolidation strategies. The primary differentiating feature of the Thunder 9570V is what HDS calls Hi-PER Architecture (not to be confused with the Hi-Star Architecture used on the HDS Lightning Series). Hi-PER Architecture is a play on the words high performance and affects the way user data and control data are moved. The Thunder 9570V uses three processing chips on each controller, one that controls all user data movement and handles the RAID processing, one that controls the movement of the control data and is used for such functions as point-in-time copy, remote copy, and managing the and one that is used as an interrupt handler. The first two use different paths, so that user data and control data travel down separate paths. 5 November

D Series Disk s The Thunder 9570V also incorporates what HDS calls virtualization assist features that are implemented within the arrays using Host Storage Domain port-level virtualization. By virtualizing at the port level, these disk arrays are able to support multiple heterogeneous platforms attached to a single port. Table 6: Competitive Alignment: D-Series vs. IBM FAStT Series IBM D280 D178 D240 D220 D173 IBM FAStT FAStT900 FAStT700 FAStT600 FAStT600 FAStT200 Turbo IBM IBM s midrange offering is the FAStT Series. Like s D-Series, IBM s FAStT Series is sourced from LSI Logic, and there are very few differences between the two lines. The FAStT900 correlates directly to the D280 Disk. The FAStT700 correlates directly to the D178. The FAStT 600 Turbo corresponds to the D240. The FAStT600 corresponds to the D220, and the FAStT200 is equivalent to the D173. The only difference between the two families is the FAStT600 and the D220. In September 2003, when IBM released the FAStT600 Turbo, IBM also incorporated some enhancements to the FAStT600 that opted not to deploy. These included support for more disk drives (56 vs. 42) and therefore more raw capacity (8.2TB vs. 6.1TB), as well as support for IBM s point-in-time copy solution (FlashCopy). IBM positions the FAStT600 as the basic disk building block for its SAN Volume Controller product. does not plan to make these changes on the D220, preferring instead to direct customers who require more capacity or functionality to the D240. In addition, IBM has announced that it will add ATA-based storage to the FAStT600 and FAStT900 Storage Servers with general availability expected in December has likewise expressed its intent to support ATAbased storage on the D Series, thus maintaining equality between the lines. Table 7: Competitive Alignment: D-Series vs. Sun StorEdge Sun Micros D280 D178 D240 D220 D173 Sun StorEdge StorEdge 6320 StorEdge 6320 StorEdge 6120 StorEdge 3510 No Direct Match Sun Micros Sun competes against the D-Series with its StorEdge line. Specifically, the StorEdge 6320, introduced in April 2003, aligns competitively with the D280 and to some degree, the D178. It exceeds both models in total raw capacity (45TB vs. 32.7TB for the D280 and D178), but lacks 2Gb Fibre Channel connectivity to disk, relying instead on 1Gb Fibre Channel connections. The StorEdge 6120 is most closely competitively aligned with the D240, though it offers less overall raw capacity (12.3TB vs. 16.5TB on the D240) and only supports a 1Gb Fibre Channel interface to disk. The StorEdge 6120, which was released in April 2003, does support remote copy, however, while that feature is not available on the D240. The StorEdge 3510 (introduced in February 2003) scales up to 5.3TB of raw capacity and is most closely aligned with the D220, which scales up to 6.1TB. Like the D220, the StorEdge 3510 uses 2Gb Fibre Channel end-to-end. The StorEdge 3510 is, however, missing support for certain high-availability features that are commonly supported in the midrange market, such as point-intime copy, remote copy and phone-home capability. However, it should be noted that the D220 also lacks support for point-in-time copy and remote copy. The StorEdge 3510 could also be matched up against the 5 November

D Series Disk s D173, but since the D173 does not support 2Gb Fibre Channel, the StorEdge 3510 is more closely aligned with the D220. 18 D Series Disk s Strengths Gap Filled in Line With the addition of the D240 in September 2003, filled the capacity gap in the middle of its D-Series product line. Prior to the introduction, customers had to choose between the 6.1TB maximum D220 and D173 models, and the 32.7TB. Shared Software Across Two Series s SANtricity Storage Manager, SnapShot Copy, Remote Volume Mirroring and SANshare Storage Partitioning Software are all supported on s BladeStore product as well as on the D-Series, providing a consistent look and feel for storage administrators across the two lines. Strong Warranty s D-Series products come standard with a three-year, on-site warranty with next-business-day. That surpasses the standard offerings on s CLARiiON products; HDS s Thunder 9570V; and Sun s StorEdge 6320, 3510 and It is equal to HP s EVA3000 and IBM s FAStT Series, and it is surpassed only by HP s EVA5000 product. Limitations Lack of Differentiation As previously stated, sources its D-Series arrays from LSI Logic. These are the same storage s that IBM sells as the IBM FAStT Series. IBM, however, has better name recognition in the disk storage market than, which is more widely known for its tape products. Given that the hardware is essentially the same, is forced to compete in this area on price yet its list prices are equal or slightly greater than IBM s on the lower-end products (D173 and D220). does offer lower list prices on the higher-end s (D178 and D280). Upgrade Limitations While the D-Series all use the same expansion cabinets and the different models share some common software, customers who wish to improve their performance, scalability or functionality must replace their D-Series controller modules completely in order to upgrade. s cannot be upgraded to the next level via a component-level upgrade except when going from the D220 to the D240. Recommended Gartner Research Disk Array Storage: Comparison Columns, DPRO CLARiiON Disk Arrays, DPRO Hewlett-Packard StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array Series, DPRO Hitachi Data Systems Freedom Storage Thunder Disk Arrays, DPRO IBM FAStT Storage Server Disk Array, DPRO Vendor Rating: Storage Technology (), VDR Insight The D-Series is a family of full-fiber, modular storage disk arrays. They are solid products with good feature sets for the market at which they are targeted. Since each model is a straight OEM product (from LSI Logic), however, there is little in the way of hardware specifications to differentiate the series from other vendor offerings that are also sourced from LSI (that is, IBM FAStT Series). does start with a lower list price than IBM on some of the s (though discount rates and negotiated prices will vary), but comes in at an equal or slightly higher price on the two lower-end models (D173 and 5 November

D Series Disk s D220). Potential customers should include both product lines on their shortlist and negotiate for best pricing. also takes a more platform-neutral approach, while other vendors like IBM tend to focus more on their own server platforms. This is not to suggest that IBM doesn t sell the FAStT on other platforms. It does. But presents a more uniform focus across all platforms. In addition,, with its strong position in tape drives and tape automation products, can offer its installed base with a single source for both tape and disk purchases. 5 November
