2 Description Cisco s Virtual SAN (VSAN) Technology The MDS 9000 SAN Fabric family introduces Cisco s Virtual SAN (VSAN) technology, offering IT managers the capability to overlay multiple hardware enforced virtual fabric environment, within a single physical fabric infrastructure. Each VSAN contains separate (dedicated) fabric services designed for enhanced scalability, resilience, and independence among storage resource domains. This is especially useful in segregating service operations and failover events between high availability resource domains allocated to different VSANs. Each VSAN contains its own complement of hardware-enforced zones, dedicated fabric services, and management capabilities, just as if the VSAN were configured as a separate physical fabric. Therefore, VSANs are designed to allow more efficient SAN utilization and flexibility, because SAN resources may be allocated and shared among more users, while supporting secure segregation of traffic and retaining independent control of resource domains on a VSAN-by-VSAN basis. Fibre Channel SAN Capabilities The following Fibre Channel SAN capabilities are integrated into the base of all models within the MDS 9000 family, and are designed to simplify deployment and efficient operation of large-scale fabric installations. PortChannels allow users to aggregate up to sixteen physical Inter Switch Links (ISL) into a single logical bundle, designed to optimize bandwidth utilization and resilience between switches. The group of Fibre Channel ISLs designated to act as a PortChannel may consist of any port on any 16 Port Switching Module within the MDS 9000 chassis, allowing the overall PortChannel to remain active upon failure of one or more ports, or failure of one or more Switching Modules. Hardware enforced Fabric Zoning designated by N_Port WWN, N_Port FC-ID, or Fx_Port WWN. Industry standard Fibre Channel ports, E_Port, F_Port, and FL_Port, as well as Cisco specific modes of port operation SAN Management Capabilities The MDS 9000 SAN Fabric family provides three principal modes of management: Cisco MDS 9000 family Command Line Interface (CLI), Cisco Fabric Manager, and integration via API with third-party or end user storage management tools. Highlights for MDS 9000 Data Center Model (2062-D01) The Cisco Multilayer Fabric Switch MDS 9216 (IBM 2062-D01) provides sixteen one to two-gbps auto-sensing Fibre Channel ports in the base model, and accepts one optional switching module from the Cisco MDS 9000 family of switching modules, accommodating up to forty-eight one to two-gbps auto-sensing Fibre Channel ports. Upon initial debut, the MDS 9000 Data Center Model (2062-D01) will accept either the 16-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module option, or 32-port Fibre Channel Switching Module option. The Cisco MDS 9216 (2062-D01) is a three-rack-unit fabric switch, featuring hot swap capability for modular components: dual redundant power supplies, fan assembly, single switching module, and optic transceivers. Fibre Channel ports on the MDS 9000 Data Center Model (2062-D01) may be configured to accept either Short Wave SFP or Long Wave SFP optic transceivers. However, when ordering the MDS 9000 Data Center Model (2062-D01), all available ports must be populated with SFP optic transceivers. Optional switching modules are designed to be interchanged or shared between all Cisco MDS 9000 Directors and Fabric Switches. Highlights for MDS 9000 Data Center Model (2062-D07) and MDS 9000 Telco Model (2062-T07) The Cisco Multilayer Director MDS 9509 (IBM 2062-D07/T07) highlights director class management, serviceability, and availability, including hot swap support and redundancy of active hardware components, and non-disruptive software upgrade support on all active components. Each Supervisor Module internally is capable of providing the ability to automatically restart failed processes. In the event that a Supervisor Module is reset because of hardware failure or service action, complete synchronization between the active and standby Supervisor Modules support stateful process failover with no traffic disruption. The Cisco Multilayer Director MDS 9509 (IBM 2062-D07/T07) consists of a fourteen-rack-unit chassis, which requires a minimum of two and supports up to a maximum of seven optional switch modules, supporting 32 to 224 Fibre Channel ports per chassis. Upon initial debut, optional switching modules consist of 16-Port Fibre Channel Switching Modules, and 32-port Fibre Channel Switching Modules. IBM offers two versions of the Cisco MDS 9509: IBM model 2062-D07 includes AC power supplies in the base, suitable for IT Data Centers IBM model 2062-T07 includes DC power supplies in the base, suitable for Telecom installations. The base configuration of both MDS 9509 models includes redundant Supervisor Modules, redundant power supplies, and requires selection of at least two optional switching modules. Hot swappable components include supervisor modules, optional switching modules, small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optics, power supplies and fan trays with integrated temperature and power management. Optional switching modules are designed to be interchanged or shared between all Cisco MDS 9000 Directors and Fabric Switches. Fibre Channel ports on the IBM 2062-D07 and 2062-T07 models may be configured to accept either Short Wave SFP or Long Wave SFP optic transceivers; however, when ordering, all available ports must be populated with SFP optic transceivers. Optional Switching Modules On initial debut, the Cisco MDS 9000 family of switching modules consists of two options, the 16-Port one to two-gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module, and the 32-Port one to two-gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module. By selecting among the 16 and 32-port switching module options, customers may design cost and performance optimized storage networks in a wide range of application environments. The MDS 9216 accepts one optional switching module, supporting 16 to 48 Fibre Channel ports per chassis, while the MDS 9509 requires a minimum of two and support up to a maximum of seven optional switch modules, supporting 32 to 224 Fibre Channel ports per chassis
3 With Cisco MDS Switching Modules, network architects can allocate bandwidth to meet specific application requirements while decreasing the switching footprint which can help lower overall storage network deployment cost. Optional switching modules are designed to be interchanged or shared between all Cisco MDS 9000 Directors and Fabric Switches. 16-Port 1 / 2-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module The 16-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module option is designed to deliver high performance for demanding storage networking applications. Auto-sensing one to 2-Gbps ports deliver up 64 Gbps of continuous aggregate bandwidth, which provides up to 200 MB/s for each port, a suitable solution for attachment of high performance servers and storage subsystems as well as the recommended method for configuring ISL connections between switches. Up to 16 2-Gbps Inter Switch Links (ISLs) can be combined into a single PortChannel. These ISLs may span any port on any 16 Port Switching Module within a chassis for added scalability and resilience. PortChannel is designed to provide up to 32 Gbps link throughput performance. Fibre Channel ports may be configured to accept either Short Wave SFP or Long Wave SFP optic transceivers; however, when ordering, all available ports must be populated with SFP optic transceivers. Based on the Cisco Systems roadmap, phased release during 2003 will add an IP Storage Services Module option, featuring Gigabit Ethernet, to enable Internet Small Computer System Interface (iscsi) and Fibre Channel Over IP (FCIP) capabilities. When introduced in 2003, the IP Storage Services Module option will be made available for integration into all models included in the MDS 9000 Family (2062-D01 and 2062-D07/T07). In addition, the MDS 9000 family is designed to support future integration of 10 Gbps IP and Fibre Channel solutions.
