JCOP Workshop III 5 th & 6 th June 2002 Status of JCOP Activities Wayne Salter, CERN IT-CO

What was the situation at the last Workshop? Detailed review of SCADA technology SCADA evaluation just finished and results presented to the Workshop Goal to understand the experiments position on SCADA technology Introduction of industrial technologies: PLCs SoftPLCs OPC Field Buses Reports on LDIWG, Gas WG Status of experiment controls activities 2

Standard Activities JCOP structure and meetings Bi-weekly Project Team meetings Bi-weekly Executive Board meetings Quarterly Steering Group meetings Programme Plan reviewed several times with Controls Co-ordinators 3

Technology Choices SCADA tendering PVSS selected in September 2000 Unlimited licenses for LHC experiments PVSS support in place Many PVSS training courses have been run OPC selected as a standard commercial interface Widely supported by industry OPC support in place Windows only 4

Technology Choices DIM selected as intermediate communications solution Existing and in-use in multiple running experiments Provides the required functionality Simple and easy to use Supported on all the required platforms Easily integrated with PVSS CERN technology choices Siemens and Schneider PLCs 1 st line support for the experiments from IT-CO and second-line from LHC-IAS CANBus, ProfiBus and WorldFIP Field Buses (Ethernet in discussion) 1 st line support for the experiments from IT-CO and second-line from IT-CO (CANBus), LHC-IAS (ProfiBus) and SL-RF (WorldFIP) 5

Architecture Working Group Architecture Working Group (AWG) Defined design choices for the DCS Object names and addressing System modelling, control structure and partitioning Use of Finite State Machines Access control Alarm handling Configuration and persistency Interfacing to external systems Software versioning Diagnostics Glossary Blueprint for Framework 6

JCOP Controls Framework - I Manuel Gonzalez Berges Objectives Customise selected tools for experiment needs (based on Architecture Document and experiment input) Building blocks to ease development Homogeneous systems Ease maintenance During 2001 there were problems with resources Loss of key team members Situation now much better (but many temporary staff) FW Working Group established to oversee and guide FW activities 7

JCOP Controls Framework - II Achievements Guidelines document Two major releases of FW, as well as intermediate releases, with ever increasing functionality More detailed talk tomorrow on the status of the Framework sub-project 8

Gas Control Stefan Haider/Renaud Barillère Requirements largely completed Design well advanced Occasional rework based on the outcome of experiment reviews Detailed evaluation of UNICOS has been performed An evaluation of various PLCs has been performed Experience gained with NA60 Problem areas: Need for radiation tolerant intelligent I/O module for FlowScan. ELMB foreseen. Concerns about the long-term support Resources for the instantiation of the 23 gas control systems More detailed talk later this afternoon on the status of the Gas project 9

Gamma Irradiation Facility Mike Clayton Test out JCOP components in a realistic environment Standard infrastructure established ProfiBus and CANBus networks Control station with PVSS Environmental monitoring Some basic data made available via PVSS and on the web Users can connect their equipment to the basic infrastructure and use the standard features provided to supervise this 10

Rack Control Paul Maley Two prototypes were developed to evolve the ideas for the functional specification as well as to be able to perform cooling measurements On the basis of the second prototype the functional specification has been finalised Market survey and tender to be performed Two questions have repeatedly been asked: Should the rack control system be for all racks or only for the counting rooms as originally foreseen? Should the tender be based solely on the functional specification or on a CERN design? Possible change in scope due to facilities offered by ST/EL (see talk later this afternoon) 11

Detector Safety System (DSS) Bruce Flockhart (Philippe Gavillet) Grey area between CSS and DCS identified during 2001 Functionality provided by GSS for LEP Working Group established in August 2001 Steering Group approved its findings and initiated a JCOP sub-project in April 2002 DSS Team now working on a prototype (see talk later this afternoon) Advisory Board to oversee development 12

Other Sub-projects - I As defined in the JCOP Programme Plan Sub-rack control Tendering completed Will need to be integrated into the FW Communication with CERN Infrastructure LDIWG awaiting the start of the second phase Front-end Communications VME postponed pending requirements PLCs available via OPC CANBus OPC or other pending requirements (ELMB handled separately) ProfiBus available via OPC WordFip no application currently foreseen 13

Other Sub-projects - II Control of High and Low Voltage Work done with companies to aid with the development of OPC servers: CAEN OPC server available and integrated as a component in the FW Wiener OPC server is not available before end of June but an IT-CO solution exists and is integrated as a component in the FW ISEG first release of OPC server due in May and FW component being developed by ALICE see talk by Sorina Popescu tomorrow Applications to interface to CERN infrastructure services Dependent on LDIWG 14

Vertical Slice Serguei Zelepoukine Established to investigate various topbottom connection mechanisms From sensor, through cables, connectors, acquisition module, patch panels, etc. up to the SCADA level 8 slices evaluated 3 slices implemented and tested Characteristics and cost identified Factor of 6 variation in cost/channel 15

Interaction with other systems LDIWG Awaiting the start of the second phase Electrical distribution (ST/EL) Discussions underway which could potentially impact the scope of rack control see talk later Magnet control (EP/TA3) / Cryogenics (LHC/IAS) Limited interaction with DCS - see talk later Gas (EP/TA1) Monitoring information available to all operators and control possibility for experts - see talk later Cooling and ventilation (ST/CV) Recent discussion to clarify interaction see talk later 16

Interaction with other entities Controls Board LDIWG LHC-CP SASG PVSS developments LHC/IAS UNICOS 17

Conclusions Progress in the area of technical choices A number of sub-projects underway A number of solutions developed and available Other sub-projects defined but not yet started Good progress made, but there is still much to do 18
