4 Sensors and Actuators of M&C Typical examples of Sensors and Actuators: Electro-mechanical systems like motors, RFI detectors, Video cameras. Control and Monitor Front end and Back-end electronics. Environment and weather sensors like smoke, temperature, wind etc. Sensors to monitor Power, Networks etc Soft Sensors - CPU performance sensors, configuration parameter settings etc Procurement of Sensors and Actuators Primary evaluation criteria - Reliability, Accuracy, Cost, Durability, Power and Space footprint, EMI/EMC and ease of integration. Standardize the product volume pricing + minimize spares inventory. May be part of Components whose realization is managed by other domains e.g. Power equipment, Computing and Communications equipment etc. M&C will need to interact with each domain to determine their needs before standardizing on sensor choices.

5 Field buses used in M&C I2C, SPI For control purposes within the unit. RS422, RS485, CANbus, PROFIbus, MODbus To control and monitoring the Components within local M&C. Fault tolerant Ethernet, Optical fiber links LAN/WAN links. Standardization of Field Bus technology is very important. It influences the choice of sensors and actuators. Different field bus choices for stations and for the core. Physical distance is few meters in stations, long in the core - limit the field bus choices to 2 - one for short and another for long. Criteria for evaluation: Reliability, data rate, max no of drops, max physical distance, RFI, cost, ease of integration, compatibility with multiple physical media, vendor independence, longevity of the technology Component providers to take care of Field Bus integration and deployment. A best practice lesson from ALMA is that the field bus protocol choice should be made collaboratively between the hardware, software and network teams.

6 Features of Local M&C Local M&C may be implemented entirely in software (except possibly for some safety-critical functions) in single processing unit. Responsible for monitoring and control of a Component, such as an aperture Array, dish, power generation equipment, transformer, power distribution network, cooling equipment, beam former, correlators etc. The number of monitoring points per Component may vary from a few dozens to thousands. It has responsibility to monitor and manage its own operating infrastructure (processor, storage, state and health status of the software itself) in addition to the Component. It should support remote SW patches, upgrades and enabling of built-in-self test applicable to Components also. Components to support Remote reset and Power on/off.

9 Hardware Platforms Local M&C Block structure - example New MCM card using Rabbit 4300 micro-controller for GMRT CMS Functions of new MCM card - MCM card is used to SET various GMRT receiver parameters and MONITOR the status of any sub system. - MCM cards are used by all sub-systems of GMRT. - No of TTL CONTROL outputs: 32 - No of monitoring CHANNELS : 64 (+/- 5V range) - Supports Ethernet Mbits/sec rate or serial communication through RS485 link up Kbits/sec for communication purposes. Specifications of new MCM card : - Rabbit 4300 core module, 60 MHz Clock speed. - Supports up to 1GB mini SD memory card, 2MB Serial Flash Memory (program), 1MB SRAM for shared code, 512KB of battery-backed SRAM. - 10/100Base-T Ethernet port. - RS485 serial port upto Kbits/sec - Configurable 32 general-purpose TTL outputs - 64 channel, 12 bits ADC, 52 KHz throughput - Real time Clock, Watch dog/supervisor support - Ten 8-bit Timers and one 16-bit Timers - Protocols supported TCP/IP - Telnet, FTP, SMTP, HTTP. - Clock modes 1X, 2X, /2, /3, /4, /6, /8, Power down mode, - Spectrum spreader for reduced EMI ~ 15 db, < 10 db 3 m - Card Size 15 cms X 12 cms

10 Key features of regional M&C It controls operation of all the equipments in a region. All monitoring points from every unit flow through regional M&C. Demands for control may be 5-10 commands per second. Single processor can meet the requirements. Monitoring needs bank of processors. Additional processors and storage required to support archiving and retrieval. Backup processor for any hardware or software fault. A bank of n+1 processors can provide monitoring plus backup capabilities. It should have low bandwidth backup communication link to Central M&C. It should have fail safe design to shut down if connectivity is lost for more than a defined period of time. It requires power backup for limited period for safe shutdown.

11 Key features of Central M&C Supports Operator/Engineer consoles and batch/script files. Gets abstract summaries from entire system. Control and Monitor processors - To process commands, validation and real time data efficiently. Integration processors To provide services to other SKA systems. Full redundant hot backup for processors, power and communication. Extensive storage facility to archive engineering data for years. Software platform may be same as for Regional M&C. Realization of Regional and Central M&C rests with domain M&C teams.
