1 Partners for the Future of Energy: ITER and the Swiss Plasma Centre Bernard Bigot Director-General ITER Organization Page 1 Congratulations: inauguration of Swiss Plasma Center q École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is recognized as one of the world s pre-eminent engineering, teaching, and research institutions. q The Center for Plasma Physics Research has for decades made significant contributions to fusion science and materials science. q Switzerland has made vital contributions to ITER through EURATOM for many years and solidified its relationship in March 2009 by ratifying its accession to Fusion for Energy (F4E) q With the inauguration of the SPC today, the importance of this partnership and commitment is re-emphasized. Page 2 1
2 Setting ITER on the pathway to success q As requested, I will provide a brief update on progress at ITER Ø Creation of a reliable ITER project baseline Ø Progress on construction Ø Progress on component manufacturing Page 3 Facing present ITER challenges q It is urgent to establish a stable ITER baseline and its associated optimized resource loaded schedule necessary for a timely cost-effective start of D-T plasmas. q This schedule must be elaborated and endorsed by all the stakeholders (ITER Members, IO-CT, IO-DAs and suppliers) who should feel fully and jointly committed to its implementation. q Bold changes in the whole ITER organization and management must be introduced now to meet these challenges. They rely on: Ø The decisions to be taken by this IC as requested in the action plan; Ø Active support by the members for their full implementation. q The first deliverables from such changes would enable the IO-DG to establish the new baseline (scope, schedule, cost, risk) before the end of the current year and to set ITER on the right course for their timely realization in the next years. Page 4 2
3 Overview of ITER Progress q Past 6 months strongly focused on shifting to new ITER phase: Ø Top priority to create a stable ITER project updated baseline and an associated optimized resource loaded schedule ; Ø Comprehensive effort: to compile a detailed information set and to develop a common understanding of scope, schedule, costs, & risks Ø Latest step: Integrated Review meeting earlier this month Ø Ultimate objective: presentation for review by the ITER Council in November 2015 to establish the basis for moving forward q Current status: Ø Completed appointment of senior staff and most elements of organizational reform; Ø Maintaining momentum on a tight and challenging schedule, including urgent steps to further refine resource estimates. Page 5 ITER: a global collaboration Central Team & Seven Domestic Agencies In parallel with the ITER Organization and staffing changes and the effort to establish a new baseline, we are also focused on: US IO CN q Improving transparency and communication with Domestic Agencies; q Maintaining the pace of construction and global component production and delivery. RF KO ITER Project JA IN EU Page 6 3
4 First Project Teams established Ø Project Teams integrate the work of the IO-CT and IO-DAs more effectively: ü Buildings Infrastructure and Power Supplies Project Team was the first to be established ü Vacuum Vessel Project Team was also established ü Cryogenics Project Team will soon be established Page 7 On-Site Construction Page 8 4

This «B2 slab» was finalized on 27 August 2014; wall construction is underway. Page 10 5
6 Poloidal Field Coils facility Too large to be transported by road, four of ITER s six ring-shaped magnets (the poloidal field coils) will be assembled by Europe in this 12,000 m² facility. White rooms are currently being equipped prior to the start of manufacturing operations. Page 11 Cryostat Workshop The Indian Domestic Agency has erected the Cryostat Workshop for assembly activities on the 30 x 30 metre cryostat, or giant thermos, that will completely enclose the ITER Tokamak. India will deliver the first cryostat elements in November Page 12 6

The system is challenging to design and fabricate, in parbcular due to an unprecedented power level and short circuit current and a highly specific operabon mode. In February 2015, a prototype converter unit was successfully tested, opening the way to future batch producbon. Page 18 9
10 Manufacturing progress Europe Europe is responsible for delivering remote handling systems for the divertor, the neutral beam system, invessel viewing and metrology, and the cask transfer system for acbvated components in all, about EUR 250 million of investment. At the Divertor Test PlaNorm facility hosted by the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland, the final demonstrabon of the divertor cassepe remote handling system was carried out in February Page 19 Manufacturing progress India India is responsible for the fabricabon and the assembly of the 30 x 30 m. ITER cryostat. Pictured, six 60 base plates are temporarily assembled at the factory in order to check tolerances prior to shipment to ITER. The first cryostat elements are scheduled to arrive at ITER in November Page 20 10
11 Manufacturing progress Japan Japan is manufacturing half of the 18 giant toroidal field coils needed for ITER. Here, the D-shaped pancake windings are heat treated at 650 C for 100 hours to react Bn and niobium to form the superconducbng compound Nb3Sn. Page 21 Manufacturing progress Korea In Korea, where two of nine vacuum vessel sectors are under construcbon, welding is carried out on the upper secbon of an inner shell only a small piece of the full component... 13 Manufacturing progress USA The US is responsible for the design, R&D, and manufacturing of the main central solenoid magnet (using conductor supplied by Japan), as well as the associated structure and tooling. At General Atomics Magnet Technologies Center in Poway, California, winding operabons began in April 2015 on a mockup module. Page 25 Drain Tanks Delivery: 7 May 2015 Page 26 13
