3 ANNOUNCING: Friday, July 30, 2004, Baden-Baden, Germany FOCUS SYMPOSIUM on Intelligent Software Systems for the New Infostructure Over the next several years we will see the progressive implementation of a global Infostructure that is capable of supporting at least some level of automated reasoning by collaborating software agents. In the US this post September 11 (2001) effort is being coordinated by the recently created Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Major projects in this area, such as the Global Information Grid (GIG) and the Semantic Web, are driven by the increasing need to automate at least the lower level data interpretation tasks that have been the almost exclusive province of the human users of computer systems. This has become necessary for several reasons. First, the increased ability to collect and store data in computers has created a bottleneck. The need to interpret the vast amounts of data has simply exceeded the availability of human resources. Second, human resources are desperately needed for higher-level information analysis to counteract increasing threats from adversaries. Third, there is an increasing need for more rapid and accurate decision-making capabilities in support of the continuous replanning requirements of dynamically changing problem situations. Topic areas of particular interest under the more general Focus Symposium theme include: Knowledge management system architectures. Discovery through near real-time access of metadata repositories. Mediation service concepts, architectures, and implementations. Semantic Web services. Information representation approaches and strategies. Agent architectures and collaboration mechanisms. 4 InterSymp th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEMS RESEARCH, INFORMATICS AND CYBERNETICS (July 29-August 5, 2004, Markgraf-Ludwig Gymnasium, Baden-Baden, Germany) FOCUS SYMPOSIUM ON INTELLIGENT SOFTWARE SYSTEMS FOR THE NEW INFOSTRUCTURE (July 30) Travel Information: Baden-Baden is a beautiful spa-resort town and convention centre located in the middle of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in Germany. It can be reached in two hours by train from Frankfurt or Stuttgart. The best way to travel to the Conference site is to fly first to Frankfurt (or Stuttgart) airport and then to take a train or bus to Baden-Baden. Those traveling by car can reach Baden-Baden through Hwy (Autobahn) A5 (Frankfurt-Basel) or Hwy A8 (Stuttgart-Karlsruhe). The Conference will be held at the Markgraf-Ludwig Gymnasium in Baden-Baden. The Conference site can be easily reached from Baden-Baden railway station by city bus travelling to Augustaplatz, or by taxi. The hotel reservation should be made as soon as possible at one of the hotels listed on the back of this page. Important Message: It is recommended to make your flight and hotel reservations as soon as possible. August is a very popular vacation month in Europe and flight/hotel reservations may not be easy to obtain unless booked well in advance.
