4 What does Utility of the Future Study mean? Phrase the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) gave its study on how the provision and consumption of electricity services is likely to evolve over the next 10 to 15 years Through a consortium of industry leaders addressing emerging issues, the initiative aimed to provide a framework to evaluate economic, regulatory and technological impact in order to understand complex topics, existing barriers and needed reform. 5 What is NextGrid? An initiative by Illinois Commerce Commission under the leadership of Chairman Brien Sheahan. An approximately eighteen-month, consumer-focused study in collaboration with Illinois stakeholders to examine the ways to leverage: the state s restructured energy market, investment in smart-grid technology, and significant expansion of renewables and energy efficiency as a result of the recently passed Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA), to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-efficient grid of the 21 st Century and beyond. 7 How has NextGrid evolved? ICC Resolution Initiates NextGrid Stakeholder Comments Released Req. For Info.: Lead Facilitator Lead Facilitator Selected NextGrid Launch Great Plains Institute & the Center for Energy and the Environment: GPI and CEE commend the Commission for initiating the NextGrid process With respect to many states beginning this process to address customer choice, distributed generation penetration, and others pertinent issues, the environmental organizations added that there is no one size fits all method to address these matters, and states are right to initiate a process that suites their unique circumstances. Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance: This effort will help ensure Illinois ratepayers benefit from innovation in the fields, of technology, finance, and ratemaking. In addition to other recommendations, MEEA proposes that the study address programs that assist the economically disadvantaged customers to identify how can the ICC work with other state and local agencies to improve the coordination of program delivery and what metrics might be adopted to better measure the impacts of these programs.

A branded series of policy sessions, originated by The Office of Acting Commissioner Sadzi Oliva, to provide a reading on Illinois electricity system, market and industry. Why is it important? Illinois continues to leverage innovation to strengthen energy diversification, boost economic opportunities, and address environmental concerns, as such stakeholders must collectively explore issues, assess strengths, and anticipate challenges in order to prepare for the future.
