10 Grid Analysis and Design for Energy and Infrastructure Resiliency for New Orleans Research focus: Supports NOLA s resilience goals by using advanced grid modeling design tools to develop cost-effective, grid resilience enhancements for NOLA and the surrounding region. This project focuses on enhancing the resilience of the grid as part of the broader energy infrastructure. Key Activities Infrastructure impact modeling and analysis Design and integration study of cost/benefit analysis Transactive control feasibility Final report to inform resilience prioritization plan which includes microgrid territories (see image) Expected Benefits Better understanding of infrastructure and community resilience subject to grid performance in NOLA Set of risk-informed, cost-effective recommendations for grid enhancements that improve NOLA resilience Conceptual designs utilized by NOLA, Entergy, and other cities to prioritize energy infrastructure improvements Partners City of New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans Entergy New Orleans US Army Corps of Engineers 100 Resilient Cities 11/7/
11 Industrial Microgrid Analysis and Design for Energy Security and Resiliency Research focus: Investigate, develop, and analyze the risks, costs, and benefits of a microgrid at the UPS WorldPort and Centennial Hub facilities in Louisville, Kentucky the most technically advanced facility of its kind in the world. Key Activities Energy risk analysis of UPS facilities Industrial microgrid feasibility study Efficiency and ancillary services assessment Analysis of landfill gas capability of nearby Waste Management landfill Overall cost/benefit analysis of previous and roadmap to implementation Benefits Provides a roadmap for industries interested in microgrids. Identifies institutional and regulatory challenges associated Clarifies interaction between industrial customer and utility. Delivers guidance to assist industrial companies in overcoming institutional barriers and assessing capabilities to implement Partners United Parcel Service Louisville Gas and Electric Waste Management Inc. 11/7/
12 Alaska Microgrid Partnership Research focus: Investigate, develop, and analyze pathway for islanded microgrids; test via two pilot project; create a repeatable process Key Activities Design framework for standardized systems Technical paper describing diesel testing results Technical paper with assessment of storage options Provide technical, business case studies for two pilot communities Planned Outcomes Document the full techno-economic development process for reducing imported fuel consumption by at least 50% in remote microgrids Identify the business case to attract the funding needed to implement these types of projects on a wide scale Create an implementation methodology for other communities to follow by documenting and publicizing the community assessment, data collection, project analysis and development process Implement the methodology in two pilot communities to act as models to position the communities to seek private and public funding to implement project recommendations Alaska Partners Renewable Energy Alaska Project Alaska Center for Energy & Power Intelligent Energy Systems Institute for Social & Economic Research) 11/7/
13 Smart Reconfiguration of Idaho Falls Power Distribution Network Research focus: Develop and demonstrate methods for keeping as much of the system operating as possible during system events at T or D levels Key Activities Completed data collection for baseline performance and real-time modeling of IFP grid in RSCAD Modeled the IFP distribution grid with interconnections Realistic data for validation from T&D grid in progress Reconfiguration algorithm development in progress Planned Outcomes Provide a generalized roadmap, including best practices adoptable by Partners utilities for dist. system operation with significant local hydro generation. Schweitzer Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing of devices for smart reconfiguration, Energineering controlled and seamless islanding, black start procedures for emergency Labs, Inc service, and resynchronization in presence of DERs Washington Viability of electrolyzer installation in IFP grid for load curtailment State Effective implementation of reconfiguration schemes for improved reliability University 11/7/
14 Transactive Campus Demonstration Research focus: Design, implement and test transactive control technologies to coordinate building loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) to demonstrate methods that enable significant energy savings, increased distributed renewable generation, and coordination of loads and DERs at scale. Key Activities Experiments designed and implemented in single buildings VOLTTRON hardware and software operational across 10 PNNL bldgs; technical documentation complete 72 kw PV system and smart inverters installed at WSU; 100 kw/310 kwh energy storage battery procured Several technical papers published Benefits Provides a roadmap for industries interested in microgrids Identifies institutional and regulatory challenges associated with development of an industrial microgrid Clarifies interaction between industrial customer and utility Delivers reference documents to assist industrial companies in overcoming institutional barriers and assessing their capabilities to implement a microgrid at their facilities. 15 Research Highlight: Midwest Interconnection Seams Study Design and Planning Tools Research focus: Determine value of expanding the transfer capacity between the Eastern and Western Interconnections (EI and WI) under various configurations. Project Accomplishments 2 in-person technical review committee meetings with 40 participants 4 scenarios selected for transmission and generation expansion, with assumptions and potential sensitivities identified Weather analysis completed; 4 TB of wind and solar data distribution Research timeline for modeling activities completed and approved; co-simulation method identified Next Steps Conduct capacity expansion analysis Test production cost models Perform AC power flow and N-1 contingency analysis Three coordinated modeling tools will be used to calculate the value of expanding the interconnectivity of the interconnections: capacity expansion, production cost, and AC power flow. 16 Research Highlight: Computational Science for Grid Management Design and Planning Tools Research focus: Use parallel computing and advances solvers to reduce time to solution by >100x for many power flow and dynamics analyses, and use a novel framework to accelerate prototyping time by 10x. Project Accomplishments Middle-of-the-road parallel runs completed with 28x faster derivative computing speed on 48 cores StructJuMP released with full nonlinear and parallel support and deployed on Amazon Cloud Stakeholder workshop held on framework, solvers, and identification of high-value use cases; design document complete Demonstrated Notebook Workflow interface for wind uncertainty + nonlinear optimization technology pathway ; integrates scenario generation with uncertainty Next Steps: Two technical papers in progress Estimate reduction in margins due to dynamic transient constraints Demonstrate dynamics under uncertainty with ARPA-E Data Test Algabraic Model option Framework openness and flexibility enabled prototyping of new functions in 6-8 weeks instead of ~ 10 months in C++.
