3 WSIS Stocktaking Platform Launched in October Provide a register of activities undertaken by stakeholders to achieve the WSIS Outcome Document targets By April ,617 projects in database 6,300 users registered 3

4 Objective of the analysis Introduce projects submitted to WSIS action line C7, e-environment Provide an overview of the projects; Promote information sharing between WSIS stakeholders and attract additional entries to the stocktaking platform. 4

10 Examples of Projects Government: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Egypt Activity Type: Mapping/ Modeling/ Monitoring Project : "The National Surface and Subterranean Water Quality Monitoring Network Description: the Project monitors surface and subterranean water quality of Lake Nasser, the Nile and its branches, canals, drains and groundwater reservoirs with an Environment Monitoring System (EMS) to provide decision makers with information required to evaluate current and future water quality and formulate water usage plans. Government: The University of La Punta, Argentina Activity Type: Initiative Project: Zero Balance Description: Children are divided into groups with computers and use the online "efficient house" software to quantity their carbon emissions and the number of trees required to offset their emissions through the Zero Balance Calculator. The government gives children and communities the trees to be planted. 10

12 Example of Projects International Organization: UNIDO Activity Type: Initiative Government: Korea Communications Commission Activity Type: National Plan Project: UNIDO's refurbished computer and electronic Waste programme Project: The Green Communications Promotion Plan Description: The project contains a full lifecycle solution, which includes the local disassembly of PCs at the end of their useful life into reusable components, which are either resold, locally recycled or exported back to partners in Europe. Based on the successful pilot project in Uganda, in 2009 computer refurbishment projects have commenced in Tanzania and Trinidad and Tobago as well. Description: This plan includes (1) converting into a green network (2) developing green communications technology (3) activating green communications services (4) and creating green jobs. The plan includes being tapeless through digitalizing the broadcasting system, recycling analog broadcasting equipment by supporting armies and educational institutions, changing to 3G using low energy, and developing low-power communications equipment. 12

14 Example of Projects Government: The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany Activity Type: Mapping/ Modeling/ Monitoring Project: "Disaster risk management and nutrition security Description: The projects uses Geographic Information System (GIS) for local disaster risk management in the catchment area of Rio San Pedro in Bolivia. International Organization: UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Activity Type: Web Information Portal Project: Asia Pacific gateway for disaster risk reduction and development Description: Gateway provides users an internet based platform for sharing information, building networks, accessing technical services and promoting regional cooperation among partners working on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific. It enhances regional access to relevant information on good practices, policy options, methods, tools and programs. 14
