6 Interoperability is key to ehealth Interoperability : The ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to predictably use the information that has been exchanged. In healthcare, interoperability is the key element for continuous care, where medical information about a patient are available and unambiguously understandable through the whole process of patient s medical treatment and care. 6

7 Interoperability goals Technical and semantic interoperability to achieve: Secure and reliable technical exchange of medical data between health professionals, and for sharing data using the EHR (DSP) of the patient Quality assured and correct semantic interpretation by the source and target systems in the same manner (by humans and systems) 7

8 About IHE A world wide initiative that enables Healthcare IT system users and suppliers to work together to enable interoperability of IT systems. It does this through: Careful definition of specific healthcare tasks (use cases). Identification of the information and processes required to support those tasks. Specification of the necessary information exchange using existing standards and the processing to be performed. Annual testing of supplier systems for conformance with the specifications the Connectathon is all about evidence based interoperability. 8

9 Connectathon = a connectivity test marathon where vendors test the interoperability of their products - in a structured environment with peer vendors. - against multiple vendors using real world clinical scenarios following IHE Integration Profiles specifications. - across a variety of domains : Radiology, Cardiology, Pathology, Patient Care Devices, Patient Care Coordination, Pharmacy, Laboratory, and IT Infrastructure. 9

10 The Connectathon s objective is to test systems conformity to IHE Profiles by using validators, and the Interoperability between systems or simulators. Clinical workflow is guidance for testing. IHE allows test validation in a controlled and neutral environment. 10

11 IHE profiles IHE profiles enable seamless and secure health information for providers and patients across the globe, and provide access to a world-wide ehealth market. IHE domains have developed new relevant profiles for new challenges in ehealth: IT Infrastructure, Radiology, Patient Care Coordination, Pathology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Cardiology, Patient Care Devices and Dental. 11

14 Why do vendors participate? To subject their products to interoperability competency testing. To prove the conformance of their products to IHE profiles. To ensure their products continue to meet the expanding base of IHE profiles. To build credibility towards customers about IHE Profile implementation competency when they register their products in the IHE Product Registry. 14

15 Why do vendors participate? To share experiences with over 350 industry leading professionals. To learn from CAT monitors knowledge and expertise. Reduced development cost and time-to-market by implementation of one connectivity method. Accelerated testing through the Connectathon s structured and supervised testing environment. Minutes of test can save months in-company effort on the question: Have we correctly implemented these IHE Profiles? 15

16 Why do vendors participate? IHE communicates the vendor s Connectathon participation at the company level. IHE will register and disclose the IHE Profile, actors and options that have succeeded at the Connectathon in the Connectathon Results Matrix. 16
