1 EAL ACCREDITED 3 weeks / 15 day package Level 3 Passive Optical Networks (PONs) & Air Blown Fibre Installation and Maintenance Approved by MoD in support of the Scheme Provider number REDEFINE YOUR FUTURE CAREER & OPPORTUNITIES This unit enables all delegates to learn the underlying principles of Passive Optical Networks (PONs) and the theory and practical knowledge on the installation and maintenance of Air Blow Fibre: Typically delegates are those with a general background in telecoms and are interested joining the Railway Industry. It will also benefit delegates who are interested or in the future wish to be employed delivering fibre to homes, cabinets, buildings, curb areas for distribution of high speed broadband communications. This award is designed to provide the delegate with today s knowledge of this cutting edge technology within all areas of international telecommunications. The unit also provides information on the (PONs) functionality and the techniques of providing high bandwidth links to uses for triple play (voice, data and video) It will describe ITU - T (International Telecommunications Union - Telecoms) standards associated with this technology. A study of network design implications and the choice of system parameters will be outlined allowing the delegate to make informed choices on appropriate systems configurations. Common network elements and hardware will be described and overall network topologies available to service providers will be analysed. The unit covers the practical aspects of installation of micro ducts, the blowing of fibre, testing/commissioning of equipment and networks, and the maintenance of the blowing equipment. Fault diagnosis techniques will be undertaken and the appropriate fault recovery action will be demolished.

How to apply safe working practices during the installation of equipment and network elements: Follow relevant health and safety legislation involved in the installation of central office (CO) and site based equipment Explain the necessity for the correct use, care, control and checking of tooling Describe the hazards associated with the use of lasers and fibre optic cables Work safely installing, commissioning and testing PON and blown fibre equipment How to analyse the PON system within the telecommunications infrastructure for the distribution of triple play services: Differentiate between the 7 layers of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model and identify their functions Distinguish between Giganet Passive Optical Networks (GPON), Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON), BPON, APON and relate them to the ITU-T and Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standards Describe typical PON topologies Describe the different transport paths in terms of Fibre To The Home (FTTH), Fibre To The Box (FTTB), Fibre To The Curb (FTTC), Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTCab) Identify major equipment elements Define the PON wavelength division multiplexing structure and state the services carried on each wavelength Carry out a PON link loss budget and corrective measures when out of budget Understand how to plan the installation and testing of micro ducts within blown fibre system: Observe safe practice in implementing the planning, installing and commissioning activities Identify the health and safety requirements outlined by equipment provider s specifications and documentation Satisfy the objectives of each of the set assignments to implement the planning, installation and blowing of fibre units into blown fibre systems Identify the factors successful completion of the blowing task Carry out maintenance of the blowing equipment as required Understand the practical planning elements and best practice associated with the installation of inside and outside equipment: Identify a range of micro ducts in respect of the size and construction of the ducting Construct a blown fibre infrastructure using suitable micro ducts and routing them per design diagrams Identify a range of micro ducts in respect of the size and construction of the ducting Construct a blown fibre infrastructure using suitable micro ducts and routing them per design diagrams. Prepare, install and test fibre optic cables and examine PON Networks using suitable test equipment: Specify the hazards associated with optical fibres and the safety precautions to be observed Identify the construction and characteristics of common fibre optic cables Select and use cable cutting and stripping tools Join single mode fibres in cable joint housing using fusion splicing Terminate cables with connections or pigtails and inspect end-face condition Use appropriate test equipment for measurements with cables such as continuity, cable tracing, OTDR and bit error rate Understand how to examine PONs using suitable test equipment: State the types of test equipment needed to test and commission a PON system List the tests required at installation of a PON system List service activation tests and expected power levels for each class of service Telecoms skills shortage means enormous career opportunities in the UK & Worldwide What qualifications you will get? GARY LANE Coming from a mining industry I was nervous and apprehensive about doing the telecoms course but I was soon put at ease by the tutors who explained the content to me in a simple but effective way. All in all it was a fantastic course filled with all the content I feel will be needed for me to succeed as a telecoms engineer I feel like I walked through the training centre door 6 weeks ago as a ex miner and now walking back out as a telecoms engineer many thanks to the trainers for making it all make sense.
